  1. not to packed in the morning, went to get my mangu fix for breakfast it was only right….im so stuffed, thats how good it was…its a biggggg meal you could probably have left overs

  2. mondongo ( cow stomach stew with various veggies and a tomato base) was i thought quite tasty, be sure to spray the provided lemon and some tabasco on your stew, served with rice.. i had not had modongo before, so i am comparing it with nothing, but as a former inhabitant of New Mexico i have had menudo a hundred times on sunday mornings after possibly ethanol
    heavy saturday evenings, i think modongo may be a useful hangover tool in the same way.  the mamey fruit shake (batido) was the perfect companion for my modongo. the restaurant is clean and pleasant, they have table service and a couple tvs which both had sports on (including baseball, in a Dominican place perhaps not a huge surprise lol) .. i walked in like 10 minutes before closing and they seemed fine with my dining in, i did not feel a lot of pressure to hurry up, but maybe just a little. a Dominicancoworker recommended the place to me as a reaSon to head to Union City so despite the mixed reviews I decided to try it out.

  3. Yes, Dominican food! I've been coming to this place since they first opened, and it stays one of my favorite Dominican/Spanish spots.

    1) The breakfasts (tres and quatro culpe) are my favorite. If you order before 11 AM, it comes with a free cup of café con leche. After 11 AM, "breakfast time" is over and they will add $1 to all breakfast orders. I don't necessarily agree with that, so I try to get mine before the cut off.  I also really like the Platanos Rellenos Con Carne and the El Conuco Mofongo. They also have good chicken sandwiches. (A couple things I've had and did not like were the Cuban sandwich and the flan.)
    2) Prices are good and the portions are huge. I always have leftovers or make sure to split with someone.
    3) The customer service I have mixed feelings about. I recommend you try to order from one of the older people because they've been there for years and know the menu, restaurant, and regular customers very well. The younger, newer hires get confused easily. Not everyone speaks English very fluently, but I've always been able to order what I want without much difficulty. (Ironically, the one time I tried ordering in Spanish was when they messed up my order.)
    4) It's great for pick up, delivery, or dine in. Lots of tables, good Spanish music, and convenient location. Metered street parking only, but I usually find a spot nearby easily. It does get very busy on the weekends, though, so be prepared for a little bit more of a wait and to double check your order.

    Despite any misunderstandings or mistakes made though, it's still a great restaurant to me and would definitely recommend it.

  4. It's 9:45 p.m. on a Saturday night.  You are starving, yet pizza, McDonalds and take-out Chinese possess zero appeal.  You crave ceviche or some kind of seafood, but "Cejas" is already closed, "Robalinos" has a private party, and "Rumba's Cafe" is under renovation.  
    Enter "El Conuco" (which technically closes at 10 p.m. but stayed open til 10:15, letting us finish our meal, and not rushing us out of the door).  

    Appetizers:  empanada con carne – nicely seasoned, the meat was moist; good pick!; quipes and empanada de yuca were decent.  
    Chicken mofongo had nice flavor, and came with a side of gravy.  I could not stop eating it, even after I was full.  The whole fried fish (pargo) was delicious according to my companion who ate the entire thing in 10 minutes.  (see photos).

    We received the best service in Hudson/Bergen county area from our waiter who was nice, courteous, attentive and pleasant.  That alone deserves a star.

  5. 3 stars because half of the meal was amazing and the other half was lackluster.

    Had ordered passion fruit (+) and pineapple (- too sweet) drinks.
    For entrees, I got the Tuesday special: sirloin steak with tostones. The portion was really large and came with lettuce, tomato, and 3 broccolis. I got medium but the meat was tough! Seasoning was not even so the pieces that i could taste a bit of the seasoning was delicious despite the toughness, but the other parts… not so much. i had to trim off the fat too b/c i couldn't chew through it.

    friend's chicken mofongo was delicious! it was a huge dense tower of mofongo and the sauce that came with it was amazing! I could eat another one of those… chicken was shredded and mixed into the mofongo and came with two broccoli and two piece of fried chicken nuggets as garnishes.

  6. Eating here always leaves me slightly sad. In summary, the food is not good enough to justify the poor service. A mysteriously ever-changing menu (somehow whatever I ask for is no longer the daily special but they can get from the kitchen for me…at double the cost). Dry chicken and watery beans. Communication mostly in grunts and pointing.
    Skip it.

  7. After watching my wife pre-bowl across the street we were hungry for some great Spanish Food. El Conuco did not disappoint.

    The Union City/Jersey City area is a cultural melting pot where you can find almost any type of food.

    We were seated right away and ordered our drinks. While we were looking at the menu we were given bowls of delicious fish soup (sopa de pescado). It really got the chill from our bones. It was loaded with all types of shellfish and was very satisfying.

    We finally decided on our meals. My wife ordered the pernil (roast pork) with Moros (rice mixed with black beans). One of the employees recommended I have the Steak and onions. The portions were huge and the steak was grilled to perfection. We couldn't even touch the Maduros we ordered ( which is one of my favorites).

    I am definitely looking forward to coming back. It is close to home, the food is very good, the service is excellent and the prices are very reasonable. We literally had a table full of food for under $30. We have plenty of leftovers for tomorrow.

    I also would like to go back and try their breakfast. This is a definite place to try if in the area and you like Spanish/Dominican Food.
