The only two places with exceptional Mexican food in New York went by the names of Mi Cocina and Taqueria de Mexico, but unfortunately, they are no longer in service. With that said, having grown up with both parents as Mexican chefs (and a mother who's actually Mexican), I'm very particular with my food. My experience at El Coyote on a Sunday night went a little something like this:
After parking, I saw a mariachi outside smoking so I naturally expected a good night. We were taken to a corner seat & I admired the decor. I'd read about the sangria and was disappointed to find out for myself that the rumors were true – it was prepackaged! (If you want good, homemade sangria, go to Pio Pio a couple of blocks up!) We ordered Sopa de Tortilla and Enchiladas. The soup was okay – too much chile pasilla (or ancho?) if you ask me. The enchiladas were delicious – I was allowed to order one of each (chicken, picadillo and cheese) and was given tomatillo sauce and mole on the side to add as I wished. I was impressed by the mole and complimented the owner (at least, I think it was him who asked us how we liked it) towards the end.
Now, for the mariachi – why is it so hard to find a good band in the city?! The sole woman singer was Colombian (no offense to Colombians, and I'm all for equal opportunity, but a mariachi band is Mexican, period!) who barely knew traditional rancheras. I requested two typical songs, and it was lovely to hear them play, but in all honesty, I prefer the drunk band who played at my aunt's wedding a couple of years back.
All in all, I suppose I'd recommend this place, but I've yet to find a decent Mexican restaurant in New York City!
I've been a patron at El Coyote on a few occasions (from birthday parties to fulfilling my need for a frozen non-Dallas BBQ-margarita during happy hour). My experiences were always "okay." Don't get me wrong, the staff is very nice and the food is pretty good. My main complaints are with the drinks – especially the margaritas.
I've tasted a bunch – house to tamarind to the Lime Boat. None were perfect. Some were too salty, some were way to sweet, and some of the frozen ones resembled…yellow snow. Each time, there was an excuse (the machine, the pre-made mix, etc) but never a resolution.
Fortunately, there are alternatives for great no-excuses-needed Mexican food. Unfortunately, most – if not all do not come with margaritas or even a happy hour.
Was not a bad restaurant but also wasn't the best Mexican restaurant I've had. Ate the Churrasco steak. Not bad. Guacamole was yummy. Not bad.
Pros- Salsa was amazing! One of the best.
Food was also very good. I had a pan seared fish (forgot name) with avocado sauce. The fish was crispy and complemented with the sauce perfectly. My boyfriend had chilles rellenos, which was also very good. The chilli was roasted nicely and the meat had a good flavor.
Cons- The place was very loud! They had live music and you could feel the banjo playing in your ear. The service was also extremely slow! Granted, there was party there, but we were there before they were seated and it took 1 hour to get our food. During this time, the server did not come to check on us, not even once to ask for drinks or apologize for the wait. I had to ask the manager to investigate. Then the manager went into the kitchen for about 5 minutes, then walked past me without a single word. The food came out 5 minutes later without an apology. I am an understanding person, if only they checked up on us and apologized for the wait, but we got nothing.
Despite the good food, I would not go back!
I just had to remove 2 stars from my review after this last visit. The service here has always been slow as molasses, but this time takes the cake.
We ordered dinner and had to wait 40 minutes for our food. The fountain diet coke tasted horrible, was replaced with a can, and that can was expired. The waiter comes back and tells me that every can is expired, and gives me another watered down fountain soda. My nachos were cold, cheese was hard and oily. My husband loved his steak as usual.
They really need to work on their service. After the waiter puts your order in, he really couldn't care less about when your order comes, because a bus boy delivers it. Complaining to the waiter accomplishes nothing, he didn't even go to the kitchen to check on it – just kept saying it was coming. I'll only be back if my husband drags me!
I'd just finished devouring their chicken salad and some of their mildly addicting salsa and chip. The food is superb, especially the Steak Fajita and Paella El Coyote. Everything from the presentation to the food and the taste was exceedingly well done, oh and they aren't overly salty like some restaurants near by, another plus!
I would say the service is slow but I'm guessing it takes time to piece together the meal, and I would opt out of the guacamole. It's ok in taste, but overall great food! Just be prepare to wait a bit, but hey, you get the Salsa and Chip and Margarita to carry you over for the main course. Which is worth the wait, I swear.
Queens has an over abundance of Spanish dining options from the whole in the wall to the elaborate multiple course band in the back event. I've been here on a few occasions and love it.
Depending on your desire and budget for me El Coyote hits a Homer every time. $10 lunch specials with a drink! And here's the kicker- you can actually taste the alcohol. Sublime flavors from subtle to spicy of all the typical Mexican fare unfortunately without the exotic ( no tongue, tripe or head cheese boo). Always festive music in the background. Fairly slow service but isn't that what drinks are for to pass a lil time. Have them make fresh guac at your table to your spicy desire (I like it hot). $4 house Margaritas & Sangria baby! 10 stool bar with 2 flat screens. Wait staff are true pros.
No not the most authentic, but with all things considered you cant go wrong and will come back as I do. Highly recommend!
I love coming here for Happy Hour. $4 margaritas and they have them in a lot of different flavors, coconut being my favorite.
Their .45 wings are really good too, a good size and very tender and juicy.
The service is always good and its never too crowed.
