  1. I think many of the posters here ordered the wrong foods. The Village Voice rates El  Gaucho one of NYC's best Argentinian places for a reason. Granted, for kosher meat, you will pay, but for those who know Argentinian food (a good friend of mine is an Italian Argentinian and ate here, noting that it was very good), you can better appreciate the offerings here.

We sampled a few dishes, and upon my suggestion, we avoided steak. As a rule of thumb, I avoid ordering steak in most kosher restaurants because I can generally find cheaper steak elsewhere and can prepare it properly myself for much cheaper. Plus, we wanted to sample as many of the authentic dishes as possible.

The empanadas (beef) were delicious, done in classic Argentinian style with egg and olive. The matambre was so good that we ordered 2 orders of it; flavorful and accompanied by a delicious Ensalada Russa (potato salad). We tried the chorizo, as well; flavorful and juicy, and the chimichurri that accompanied it was deliciously flavored (although in the future, I'd purchase kosher chorizo and prepare it at home with my own chimuchurri recipe).

The canelones a la rossini were a faithful rendition of the Argentinian classic, and the Puchero was delicious.

In brief, you are best sticking with the classic Argentinian dishes here, and as the only kosher Argentinian restaurant in the US, I'll definitely be back.
