Small little mexican food place on the UWS. reasonably priced, good guacamole, long wait unless you are lucky.
Food: The sizes of the food are not too large but enough to satiate with sharing a plate of guacomole and order a meal each. The guac is very good and I guess they make it in very large batches becuase it was on our table within 2 minutes of ordering it. The tacos were pretty filling and tasty. The price is right. The Canitas sandwhich was good but the pressed bread was not really a huge plus.
Service: Quick, a bit rushed but this place has a line outside so not anything to complain about.
Price: Very well priced for the UWS. Under $10 for a meal that is actually filing. Not bad at all.
Decor: Eh, not much thought was put into it here and nothing even memorable except for how crowded it is.
Notables: Nothing to note.
I like El Mitote. As a native Texan I'm regularly in urgent need of the closest taco, and in my neighborhood, El Mitote usually saves the day.
Guac is standard, but like I said, I'm here for the tacos. My favorite is the Bistec (steak), but I've had them all and they're all delicious. If you're looking for something different, I think the chipotle shrimp is a sleeper hit.
The drinks are strong and yummy, served in mason jars. Margaritas will put you on your ass… probably won't need more than two, max. Be careful with the sangria, because it has tequila in it. I usually go for the special agua fresca. Micheladas are good too!
Service is so so – this is definitely a place you order and then kindof hang out until you're ready to pay/go. It just feels like there's a lot going on so your server might get back to you a few times… or not.
Skip! My friend and I went for lunch and neither of us liked our food and the margaritas are WAY too strong. The plates are food was served on were like the paper plates you would use for a picnic. Service was also very spotty. We sat outside and were served after a table that was sat after us.
Tacos were ok as was the margarita. I was expecting amazing margaritas since this is a Mexican place, but they were the bad kind of margaritas you had in college. Should've upgraded to a better tequila. Yuck. They even brought out the wrong margarita for my friend, who ordered the frozen mango, they gave her a regular by mistake and when she noticed and said something, there was no apology, but they did bring her another one – the right one this time.
I had the steak tacos. Again, it didn't wow me. It had a ton of chopped up onions in it, which I had to take out. The creamy guacamole was great. At least the prices weren't too bad. No reservations and seating is a mess. Mostly communal tables inside except for a few two-tops. Outdoor tables are hard to get, we unfortunately had to sit at the one high-top table outside, which was communal, so we had to share with other people. Usually busy here and fun, casual vibe.
Stopped in for lunch while visiting my brother at school and had a great time. The guac was great but the margs were even better. It gets crowded during happy hour, so if you're lucky enough to get a table outside, sit back and enjoy!
This just replaced my favorite Mexican restaurant that recently closed on the UWS. The bar scene is lively and fun. The margaritas will end your night quickly if you are not careful. They are delicious. We just had some chips and salsa at the bar, but the other food looked good. Will definitely return!

We've moved on from uptown, now we're at my daughter's favorite spot on the UWS. The hand-shaken 'Ritas served in Ball jars were delicious, generous, and strong. We did get guacamole and chips. The guacamole was chunky and creamy, the chips fresh and warm. The personable manager, Rick, and his staff were great and "let us be us". (Did I mention the margaritas were strong?). We left very satisfied, and the tab was VERY reasonable, especially for the UWS. I don't know when I'll return to this 'hood, but if I do, I'll definitely patronize El Mitote again, and give it a food review next time.
Valentine's day on a bitterly cold Sunday night. Didn't have a reservation anywhere, but needed a warm, filling place after coming out of the local AMC theatre. El Mitote was surprisingly not crowded and filled with vday decorations.
After securing a spot near the back with all the balloons – quickly ordered the Guacamole ($10) to start and frozen margaritas ($6 each). Guacamole is super creamy yet holds well on the chips. Tasty and not easy to stop once you get going. Also ordered the Pepito Torta ($13) and a Scrambled Egg Burrito ($9). Juicy meat in the torta that needed no extra hot sauce on perfectly toasted bread. Egg burrito had a nice kick with the jalapeno paste.
Service here is extremely fast. We ordered each dish and it came out a few minutes after, without any of the food suffering in quality (maybe the chips could have been warm, but not much of a complaint). Loved the ambiance, the strong drinks, the good food, and convenient location. Will certainly be back.
