El Rey De La Caridad

What a find! My friend introduced me to El Rey and I am so lovin' it. Mostly cause this place has character. Haha. No menu so you just kinda tell them what you want to eat. I've always gotten the stewed beef over rice, with beans and plantains and I've always had enough for 2 meals. A good intro to Dominican food.
My belly sure got lots of love from El Rey de la Caridad.
Great spot for a simple and delicious Dominican cuisine, typical meals consumed on a daily basis back in DR. The staff here are friendly and you will see plenty of regulars parked here, ordering food and chatting away.
The menu is pretty clear on what they offer. I came here during the lunch hours and theirs never disappoints. Note that these Lunch menu items are not made to order but served cafeteria style behind the counter. I would suggest Pollo (Chicken) or Chivo (Goat) Guisado and Locrio de cerdo (Rice cooked with pork, if you are into that kind of dish).
You can chose your lunch dish to come with rice and beans or moro (rice cooked with beans in). If you don't mention it then the dish seems to come with a few pieces of fried sweet plantain (platano maduro). You can mention to the server to give you a small side salad instead of it.
I have tried their monfongo* and they were not bad and way filling since they also give you a side salad, gravy to wet the monfongo and toasts (can you say Carb Coma!??). But personally, I wouldn't go there for that.
* Mashed fried green plantains, usually with a protein of choice. If you have this dish, be prepared to be not feeling hungry for a good while.**
** This is a general rule, if you get hungry soon after consuming the entire serving of monfongo you are either: super active, have incredible metabolism or you are not human.***

I got ya good!?
Mofongo. Mofongo. And more Mofongo!
A group of us met up here for dinner last night and this place is a gem of a place. Don't come here if you're into uppity. This is down-to-Earth Dominican food. And the mofongo takes your mouth to a tasty high!
We sat in the back of the house and the wait staff here were super friendly and on par. I liked that the waiter encouraged us to speak Spanish! Viva espanol! I was able to practise my Spanish and hang out with cool peeps over food!
We ordered a sampler appetizer which included maduros, boiled plaintains, papas and croquetas rellenas. They were out of eggplant, but that's OK. The waiter was really sweet and picked out things for us and said, "me confia," which means "trust me!"
Many of us had mofongo, including chicken, shrimp and queso. Mofongo is like mashed potatoes except it is mashed plaintains with garlic. Very yummy and filling! I had the cheese mofongo and it was delicious. I also had enough for lunch the next day.
This is a no frills eatery and you go to eat good Dominican food. I just wished we stayed for dessert. I'll have to come back to try the tres leches cake!
Only complaint was the never-ending ranchera music. I would've preferred Reggaeton but hey when in Rome, do as the Romans do!
