One of the hidden food spots in the Grove Street neighbourhood. I stubmled upon this amazing place when I was in the hood visiting a friend. They offer authentic latin american cuisine and it is very reasonably priced. It is good for breafkfast, lunch and dinner. Though the place is not big but they have some decent seating capacity. If you are looking for some authentic food with a bang for your buck then this is the place to be at.
The pork lunch special is a very generous serving of rice, beans, and pork. Some pieces of the pork were more more tender than others, but the flavor was very good, and the pork skin was perfectly crispy, I'd eat just the cracklings from this place! The rice was typical as were h beans, but both were good as sides. One of the best things about this place is the value of all the food you get for such a little price. It's great to come up here and sit at the counter during a lunch break, or swing in and take it to go which is what I did because it was a little warm on this particular summer day. The service is no-nonsense and pretty quick. Everything is already prepared behind the counter, so you can pick and choose what you want. For those of you looking for authentic ethnic fare in Jersey City, this is a good little place to checkout.
My final visit here started to feel like performance art. How long would various employees ignore my existence? Backtracking a moment, the use of Zagat's math would indicate that this place deserves a higher rating, with the o.k. pernil, rice and beans making up for the iffy service. But pernil is not plutonium and a trip to Queens might be quicker than waiting for the unfriendly waitresses here.
I don't recall exactly how many minutes were on my walkout clock, but the finale was when one of the workers found time to help her friend plug in her iPod but couldn't spare 10 seconds to take my order.
Diner type Dominican restaurant that carries all the essentials…fritanga y cuchifrito, sopa de pollo, moro or arroz con gandules, morcilla, pernil, chivo, carnes guisada…well you get the picture. The food packs some serious authentic flavor AND
It's low budget and cheap.
The staff is friendly enough if not just above efficient but they get the job done.
Paper napkins, Country Club Framboyan and some seriously loud tunes add to its authenticity.
They have a following…lots of regulars looking happy and full and that's always a good sign.
I may become one too.
I live in the neighborhood and pass by this place everyday. The place used to be super dirty with smelly water running on the side walk. However, they recently did some clean up/renovation so I decided to give it a try. I am so glad that my husband and I did not order too much food, we just got beef stew and yellow rice. Beef stew was mediocre and yellow rice was horrible. The rice was dry, probably for sitting outside too long, and some part was not fully cooked. I could feel the hard core of the rice when I chewed it.
