El Toro Taqueria
“Oh, and they actually understood what "gluten free" meant and were able to guide me to safe food options for me, which was something I had a seriously hard time with in NY.”
“Reasonable prices- cash only
only feedback on the burrito is there was no salsa in the burrito and no salsa in the bag- so the burrito was a bit dry but otherwise flavors were good and filling.”
“A very small eatery on a side street, but we miraculously came here as opposed to famous ones like Smoke Joint, etc…”

Happened to stumble upon this place looking for a quick bite near Barclay's Center while waiting for a show. It's not been open long and can't be found on Google Maps as of 10/14/13.
First, the staff is very nice and enthusiastic about doing well. They asked for feedback and consistently checked with us to make sure the food was good and we were happy. That's a good sign, for sure.
The food was excellent. I got three tacos: the carne asada, the mole, and the chorizo, which was a special the day I was there. Both mole and chorizo are difficult to do correctly, and I thought both of them were very good. The rice and beans are good as well, if you get a combo. They have a good selection of hot sauce and other things to go with your meal. They do have a sign up reading "BYOB" so I guess you could go next door to the deli and get some beers to have with your food.
The place is pretty small, and when we went in, it was at least 85 degrees in there. So, if eating in a small, hot room is not your thing, get your food to go.
This place is right down the block from my school. I stopped by today because it was the last day of school. I tried the stew chicken taco. The chicken was a bit dry, overall ok taco. If I come back here I would get a taco with different fillings. Was a bit disappointed, I expected better.
This is a little whole in the wall taco joint.
They've got all the standards plus some vegetarian options they change up depending on availability I guess. Vibe was divey but comfortable, service was similar.
We sat outside on a nice day.
I got grilled corn and potato and pepper tacos with all the fixings on lunch deal (they have it everyday) that comes with rice or rice and beans. Decent taste but a little overpriced for what you get-either way I was full afterwards.
I'll be back if I want a quick taco but I still haven't found my taco spot in this hood yet.
El Toro is fantastic for soft tacos, salsas, burritos etc near BAM. The tacos are small but affordable, and in my opinion, are the best way to sample all the deliciousness El Toro has to offer.
The store is pretty tight, with seating inside for 12-15 and seats outside for 6. The inside seating is very cramped, please don't bring a crowd. There's also a step up, so its not stroller/wheelchair friendly. You order at the counter (hopefully there is no line, because when its crowded in here there is no rhyme or reason). You get your drink and have a seat. The staff will bring you out a tray of amazing once the kitchen whips it all together (10 minutes ish). Then you stuff your face and leave them good reviews.
My favorites are the carne asada, the Korean, the chicken guisado, the chicken mole, and pork carnitas. That's half the menu right there, but its all pretty good. Everything comes with the pickled onions on top, which are good, but if you don't like onions, make sure you tell them not to use them. Portions lean small, so three tacos is a meal (and you can get a combo meal with three tacos and rice and beans). Their salsas and guacamole are also amazing. Elote (Mexican street corn with cotija cheese) is also recommended if corn is in season.
Staff and pricing are great and personally, I think El Toro is friendlier than the neighborhood average.
Fantastic place to eat a cheap on the go meal.
I came here on a Saturday afternoon around 4pm for some take-out.
The place isn't hard to find if you are familiar with Downtown Brooklyn.
You can take the train to Atlantic-Pacific and walk on Fort Greene Place or get off at DeKalb Ave and walk on Fulton.
It's a small establishment with 2 tables outside and about 6 tables inside.
The guy who took my order was nice and polite when he explained all the items on the menu when asked. I think he's also the owner of the place from my observation. They do delivery, take-out and catering from the advertising on their menu. I'm not an expert with mexican food at all. This is my second time tasting mexican food.
I ordered the Coreano Taco (steak w/kimchi), Enchiladas Combo of Camaron, Pescado and Carne Asada, a veggies quesadilla and a torta.
For my taste buds, the food here is very spicy. The Coreano Taco includes some meat plus a heavily spicy sauce, onions, cheese on a soft tortilla. The combo enchiladas consist of carne asada (steak), pescado (fish), camaron (shrimp) with rice and beans. The rice and beans were given in a separate small container. THe combo was not something that I will get again. The sauce probably made up most of the dish because it was baked with salsa and cheese.
The veggies quesadilla was my favorite as it was warm and crunchy. And finally the torta which is a mexican sandwich that consist of my choice of chicken with lettuce, pico, cheese, guacamole and salsa was very spicy for my taste.
If I pass by this place again, I would recommend the quesadillas.
Total was about $30.
El Toro is a great little spot near my work that I usually frequent especially during the afternoon since the lunch special here is pretty solid. Their menu isn't too lengthy but they have a decent variety in flavors. My usual go-to is their tacos. During lunch, their special is 2 tacos + rice and beans for $7.50. I think I've had most of their flavors with my favorites being:
-Carne Asada
-Coreano (steak with kimchi)
-Camaron (grilled chicken and shrimp)
-Mole (chicken with chocolate)
-Carnitas (the best one)
On top of each taco they add pickled onion, cilantro, cojita cheese and salsa on a corn tortilla. The tacos themselves are a bit tiny for my liking, but nonetheless I'm still a big fan. The service is always great and speedy. Also, one huge perk – how many places do you know of that has Horchata? So so good.
P.S. It's right off the G stop. ….Since no one uses that line, this was probably not the most helpful information. But hey, if you're in the area!
The cashier and chef are depressed. Their depression leaked into my food. Chicken taco was weak. I got the corn in a bowl instead of on the cob, what a mistake! The two stars are for the chipotle mayo and queso sauce… and the Kimchee steak taco. I love Kimchee. probably won't return.
I ordered 3 tacos, shrimp & fish & steak, but they brought out fish & fish & steak, which would have been fine if the fish wasn't so overcooked & tasteless; the worst fish tacos! The steak was just fine, but the rice and beans my meal came with were really bland and boring. What really sealed the deal was that there was a large (3 inches long) piece of plastic in one of my fish tacos, it wasn't a bone, it was actually plastic, and when I took it inside, they were so nonchalant, so what, do I want another taco, do I want a refund, what's the big deal, what do you expect from us? Ugh, nothing. Ever.
