  1. 4.5

Food in good company is a form of pleasure. But doing so too early for a Sunday after standing on line for longer that your actual meal takes, on a crowded place that you have been watching out for months because is the hype of the moment … not really. At least for me.

Forget that and enter: Ellary's Greens. I really like it here.

The location is great, the staff is nice, the decor is beautiful and there is online reservation available even for weekend brunch. That with my friends … that's how I like it.

It happens that in addition to this, Ellary's Greens offer a innovative menu that has yet fail to disappoint us. Get their house-cured bacon on a side (your are welcome). Theirs chickpea fries are a bit pricey for the serving size ($10) but really tasty. My friends loved their Chickpea Burger. I'm always on simple mode when brunching, so eggs with greens will do. The nicely cook well seasoned eggs , the sunflower seeds and the dressing stands out on what it is a simple dish.

As mentioned, the decor is beautiful, is all natural as it is the focus on the food. Don't miss their fresh-made juices. I have try the Sunshine (carrot, green apple, lemon, ginger, mint) perfect if you love ginger, the Detox (kale, spinach, celery, cucumber, green apple, parsley, lemon) and the Lunatic (celery, cucumber, apple, cilantro, ginger, cayenne). The taste is pretty amazing, balanced and you get hints of all the ingredients they put on it.

They are also allergic people friendly plus if you have other demands such as vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free or dairy free the menu will makes you happy. The service is been always good for us, they are efficient, fun and friendly and I really like how you are not rushed to leave.

While it was a matter of convenience the first time, it has now become a matter of preferred choice.

  2. I didn't enjoy a single thing about this meal.

Po-faced healthiness, from the silly little 'hair shirt' stools to sit on (quite likely the most uncomfortable seats in west village) to the dry as a bone salad, it was a sorely underwhelming experience.

Confusing menu, badly explained, and when choices had been made the food, IN MY OPINION, was pretty awful. Tasteless, bland and expensive.

Eating healthily can be a far more nourishing experience, don't take pleasure in giving a poor review (means I wasted my money) but it is what it is.

  3. Cute, bright, airy location. Went with the sister on a Saturday for brunch.

I recommend the chickpea fries and chickpea burger. I had a special of the day which was basically the two-egg any style with potato hash added onto it.

Taking a star away for the service. While a waiter was explaining the menu to us, another (more senior?) waiter came up and interrupted our waiter with a query. They then proceeded to have a low-key argument in front of me and my sister for 5 minutes. Our waiter was re-assigned away from us and another waiter ended up repeating the whole process again. Pretty exasperating. Never hold arguments/disagreements/long service-related discussions in the presence of guests; I consider it pretty rude.

  4. Service is ok. Not the friendliest, but the gentleman did his job.
Decor is nice except those uncomfortable low-back chairs- why???
Food was excellent. The crispy roast chicken was delicious. And after being here twice, everything I have tried so far has been yums.
Will most likely be back again. Good stuff.

  5. This review is tearing me up inside (albeit, dissimilar from how my friend was torn up on the inside after partaking of brunch here w/ our large group this past Sunday… he can thank the 30 day vegan approach he's attempting… poor fool).  As if the name didn't allude to it… this joint is vegan/vegetarian/gluten/healthy-eating friendly.  With myself and a few others in our brunching party having just done a sub-8 miler (with me only having a banana after that), it would not be hyperbole to say that I could eat a horse at the time of my visit to this spot.  Unfortunately this place didn't serve horse… but even though it was vegan/veggie-tarian friendly, the cuisine wasn't exclusive to those dietary schools of thought.

A 1:30 reservation turned into a 1:50 seating time because NYC vehicle traffic is a massive b*tch; who would've thought that a subway ride from Astoria would have been a far more viable means to gain punctuality?!  Nevertheless, we arrived intact, although we lost precious minutes on our time to order (like I said, we were already famished).

A cursory look at the menu, and I already knew I would have to order something w/ bacon.  Open faced BLT it was; and why not a side of chicken sausage and a Sunshine as well (the latter was a juice which contained carrot, apple, celery, ginger, and something else I'm forgetting).  Everything was reasonably priced and relatively healthy (needed those gainzzz).

However, although I had my order down the minute I glanced at the menu, the server, while friendly and patient with our brunching party of eight persons strong, was a slave to procedure; what do I mean by this?  Water first… and she only had two hands (as far as I remember), so glasses came, two by two.  Then time would pass, and she'd pour the water in each glass, and go back for more water (as her water container couldn't hold enough water for all our glasses).  This process continued for a few more minutes until each and every glass was full.

Pretty tedious huh?  And that was just the water, as no orders were taken yet!!!! Next, drink orders… and drink orders only.  Combinations of juices and coffee were selected, and just juice and coffee orders were taken (i.e. no food orders).  After these orders were taken, server didn't come back for a LLOONNGG time.  My body was basically eating itself in the interim.  Why was it taking so long (you might be asking yourself)?  Looks like our server was a talented lady, as she was the one handling the juice creations (as per the testimony of some of my brunching fellows).  Thankfully, she used a little server tray thing to carry the juices four at a time, so thankfully that wasn't as much a chore as the water scenario.  And to the credit of our server and the restaurant, the juice was terrific; a nice ginger-y bite, but with enough sweetness from the apple, and a lovely orange color from the carrot.

It wasn't until after all of this had transpired, more than a 1/2 hour into our seating (I believe), that we FINALLY got to order food things.  And did the food come out quickly??  The answer, unfortunately, is nahh (surprised?!).  At that point, I wasn't even hungry anymore, as my stomach pretty much already (involuntarily) ate enough of myself (apparently that happens).

However, I still plowed through the open faced BLT and the chicken sausage I had ordered (and my fellow diners pretty much tore through their orders as well).  The BLT was pretty terrific.  Thick cut bacon, frisee in lieu of lettuce (and tossed in a superb acidic and oily dressing), and fresh tomatoes definitely hit the spot… and topping the whole damn thing with an egg was just a masterful decision.

All diners were happy with their decisions (even though someone with a more vegan sort of dining selection was rendered a little bit of tummy problems when all was said and done… but no need for you to hear about that, although I'm sure diners sitting outside the bathroom could certainly hear all about it [and in real time]).  Either way, I liked the place, but the interminable wait times dampened the experience a bit.  Perhaps a visit in the future, with a smaller dining party (i.e. one additional person), would prove to be a more time efficient venture.

  6. Visually cute, health-conscious restaurant.

The food was okay – tasty, but nothing special. Prices are high and portions are small. I think you're paying more for the local/organic/etc type foods – they definitely try to play up the health factor. I ordered the grilled salmon which came with a (very tiny) fennel salad and about 4 fingerling potatoes. The salmon was cooked well with nice seasoning but was kind of small for $19. Then again, it's NYC…

    There's an extensive smoothie/juice list…but also it's kind of a wine bar?

I think I would give this place 3 or 3.5 stars based on food, but the service was not so great. The server was completely inattentive through the course of the meal. Additionally, we had ordered a couple of the vegetable dishes to share for the table, and they weren't brought out until we were almost finished with our main courses. When they first brought out our dishes and five or so minutes passed, we flagged down the server to see if the vegetable sides were on their way and he said "yeah they'll be right out" sort of dismissively. Then he came back a few minutes after that to ask us what sides we had ordered (even though he was the one who took our order) and ran over to the computer to enter the sides – it became clear that he never told the kitchen, so the vegetables ended up being more of a "dessert." On top of that, they weren't anything spectacular. $10 each for a handful of brussel sprouts and a handful of bok choy.

If you're very health conscious this place is probably a good option for you, assuming the service improves.

  7. 3.5 stars. Rounding up because the decor here is absolutely gorgeous, plus I paid a very reasonable amount for my meal. Ellary's Greens had been on my list for ages before I finally came here, and it did not disappoint. The food didn't wow me as much as I expected it to, but it was tasty, hearty, flavorful and HEALTHY! So I really can't complain too much. And I won't.

Came here on a Friday night at 8pm with four friends. Me being me, I got there a bit early to scope out the scene (do it for the V–I mean Yelp). As other reviewers have mentioned, the vibe here is just fabulous. This place just screams "all-natural". The decorative elements all either mimic or actually are, verdure. Beautiful ceilings and rafters with cutouts of flowers and leaves, exposed brick walls, all sorts of plants scattered around. For those few hours that you dine here, you feel like you're in your own personal secret garden. It also smells fresh and floral (think ginger/herbal/minty/kind of like an Equinox but better), which enhances the rest the of the natural elements.

One criticism I do have is the chair situation. These chairs, while "chic" and "decorative", are not very comfortable. Nor are they practice. At least at the bar/high top tables, the chairs are almost chair/stool hybrids–not much of a back and overall very tiny. On a cold night, draping a massive coat over one of these babies isn't an easy task. It only caused mild frustration initially, but I personally think it's a design flaw.

Our waitress, while sweet, didn't seem to know the menu at all. She only seemed to know one descriptor, which was "very nice". So if all of the specials are "very nice" and the entire menu is also "very nice", does not exactly help the decision process. You see why I'm conflicted in my rating. Thankfully, the food made up for this. A few friends and I split:

-Special lentil soup (had carrots and some other hearty vegetables): A
I don't like soup. I should say that outright (and I did, so go me?). But lentil soup is one of the few exceptions. On a freezing New York night, this soup really hit the spot. Flavorful and incredibly healthy while still maintaining the richness of good lentil soup. The bowl was basically pint-sized, but we did opt for smalls instead of larges. It was filling so I can't really complain!

-Roasted Brussels Sprouts with butternut squash, walnuts, and orange zest: A-
Yet another wonderful winter dish. I personally like my roasted brussels sprouts cooked a *bit* more than how these were prepared, but overall, they were a hit. Hard to go wrong with a combo of brussels/squash/walnuts. Sweet, savory and again, hearty.

-Roasted Cauliflower with thyme, chili flakes, and lemon confit: A
If I could only make cauliflower like this on my own! Some of these trendy healthy spots make cauliflower that's seriously crack cocaine. Chalk it up to seasoning, I suppose. Don't think I tasted much of the chili flakes, but this, unlike the brussels, was roasted EXACTLY the way I like it.

-Sautéed Baby Bok Choy with garlic, pickled ginger, and shiitake mushrooms: B+
Nothing too exciting here. I was looking for more flavor. That said, this was still solid. Very light and refreshing, as bok choy should be. If I were to change one thing about my order, it would probably be subbing in the Swiss Chard for the Bok Choy.

Re: price–I certainly do sympathize with the reviewers who feel that the menu is overpriced considering the amount of food you get. The veggie dishes in particular are quite small for having a price tag of $10 and higher. But I also recognize that serving food that's clean, mostly vegan, healthy, organic, grass-fed–and all other health freak buzzwords–ain't cheap. Just go to a Whole Foods, buy your groceries and watch your jaw drop as you look at the receipt. Just the price we pay (pun intended) for this kind of stuff. As a health nut, this isn't anything new for me.

Lastly I'll say that Ellary's Greens is very versatile. We had a casual dinner here, but you could easily come here on a date as well–the lighting is dim and almost romantic. So while there are definitely some kinks here, three stars just doesn't seem to do this place justice. More pros than cons, in my opinion!

  8. Came to catch up with college friends for dinner. Friday nights are packed, but thankfully we had a reservation. Walking in at night, this place looks magical. I felt like I was walking into the woods and could see the stars above me. The decorations are on point, and the dim lighting really fits. The space is tight, but this is west village so that was expected.

We were seated in the back at a large square communal table. The bar stools are way too high for the table, and made eating very uncomfortable.

I got the Red Swiss Chard because I love pine nuts and mushrooms. It tasted really good and went well together. One of my friends got the Spinach Ricotta Gnudi and 2 others got the chickpea burger. No complaints from anyone. The food is good, but the portions are on the smaller side.

The waitress is super nice – A+ for service!

For me, this was the type of restaurant that I'd come once to for the experience.
