Every time I passed by this cart, pronounced Elliniko in its native tongue, I could smell the aromas of the grill flowing down the street. It always smelled so darn good, so I asked myself why, after all this time, have I still not checked this place out. I've never noticed this cart without a substantial following waiting to order. When I arrived there, at 1pm, there were 12 people in front of me, taking 17 minutes to get my meal. But don't let the wait time scare you, because it's for good reason. This cart is run by a lovely couple from Rhodes Greece, husband and wife. Most of the food is freshly cooked to order, with the exception of the knishes, hot dogs, and sausages which are situated on a separate, smaller grill.
While waiting on the line, it may be a bit difficult to see the menu since it is on the opposite end of the cart. So I've taken the liberty to jot down most of the menu: Hamburgers ($2.75), Cheeseburgers ($3.00), Italian Sausage on Hero ($4.00), Shish Kebab or Chicken or Gyro with Rice & Salad ($5.00), Gyro on Pita ($4.00), Shish Kebab over Pita ($4.00), Hot Dog or Hot Sausage ($2.00), Philly Cheesesteak ($4.50), Knish ($1.75).
I ordered Chicken w/ Salad & Rice ($5.00). I watched as the raw chicken was thrown on the flat-top grill and cooked to perfection. My aluminum platter consisted of: a couple scoops of rice; salad with Italian dressing, salt & pepper; and grilled chicken complimented with sautéed onions and green peppers. I could already tell the food was going to be delicious as I watched the lady prepare my dish.
Portions were decent though not overly generous. For all the added bonuses and freshly grilled food, it was easily compensated and overlooked. The salad consisted of chopped lettuce and 2 slices of tomato, topped with Italian dressing, salt and pepper. Fairly simple, but definitely a nice added touch as compared to the other carts serving nothing with it. The grilled chicken was definitely a crowd-pleaser, tender yet slightly dry in a good way. The chicken was grilled so you could taste the charcoal/carbon flavor. Add that it being tender and well-seasoned, and it was a home run. Delicious! The sauteed onions and peppers complimented the chicken perfectly making the dish that much better. Even the rice was flavorful. The white sauce was more of the mayo consistency for those wondering. And the hot sauce was thin and light, more towards being vinegar-based. Definitely a plus with the chicken and rice.
Nothing seemed to disappoint from first bite to last. Everything was pretty darn tasty, and I'd have to say this may possibly be the best street cart in the downtown area. Check it out!! I truly hope you won't be disappointed.
