This place lives up to it's name because the pizza is quite amazing! I came here for the first time with a friend who comes all the time. And he can't stop raving about how delicious it is. We got a pizza with a choice of 6 toppings so we had some eggplant, pepper, onion, spinach, mushroom, and sausage. It was super amazing! The crust was done nicely and all the toppings were cooked deliciously! We got a pie but a small/medium one and it was perfectly portioned for two people. The location seems like a pretty busy spot but it is the spot to go to on the block and in Elmhurst in general. The space inside is pretty spacious and they have benches very casual and ordinary but the food is worth coming in here for.
Not bad.. not great either. ..so-so.
Crust reminded me of pizza hut, sauce tasted like Hunts. Not exactly what I want from a N.Y. pizzeria. Also not happy you have to order a pie, sometimes you just want a slice or two. Won't be in a rush to return.
I don't know if "spoiled" is the correct term, but having grown up in Brooklyn, I've seen many pizza joints with a similar storefront. Golden metal sheets shaped into a frame around the windows, allowing you to see inside. Signs in the window (sometimes neon depending on the venue) and so on. So it was when I saw this joint, I really wanted to try a slice. Surprise! They don't serve pizza by the slice. Maybe my expectations need to be tempered? I don't know, but I felt an odd bit of frustration walking in wanting to just sample the pizza with a slice but instead having to buy an entire 10" personal pie.
On the other hand, if you have someone to share the pie with, this works out nicely as each of the tiny slices is much less of a bad-for-you fat/calorie load than a regular sized slice so maybe this was a blessing in disguise? I'll leave that to the philosophers.
The gentleman who I presume to be the owner or manager (silver haired, tall gent) was very nice. When I ordered a slice, he patiently explained to me how the ordering in the shop works, so I ordered a small pie with mushrooms. The younger guy who was working the oven gave me some funny looks, like he didn't want me there or something. Maybe he was having a bad day (at 11:45am), who knows. I will say he perked up considerably when a couple of attractive young women behind me ordered. Make of that what you will.
As the silver haired man promised, the pie took about 15 minutes to make. It was kind of cool knowing I was getting a freshly made pizza just for me. I sprinkled on some of my favorite flavorings such as red pepper flakes and garlic powder and then tried out a slice, still hot with melting cheese.
The style of crust here is a thicker and chewier one than I generally prefer. It had the flavor and consistency of a rectangular Sicilian slice, but the crust was now here near as thick. The cheese was okay, nothing spectacular but the sauce had a really nice sweetness to it that balanced the more savory flavor of the crust nicely. Overall it was a tasty slice, but not what I would consider one of my favorite slices ever.
Overall, a good pizza place and I dig places that have survived for decades even as the area around them changes (as this area of Elmhurst most certainly has). I'd eat here again without hesitation.
2.5? Order in advance as it takes a while for them to make the pizzas (15+ minutes). The pizzas are personal sized. There were two of us and we were hungry so we ordered two pies… had about 3 small slices left over.
Ordered the ham & onion and pepper pies. A bit pricey at around $7 per pie. The crust was soft and the ingredients tasted fresh. I think the onion & pepper could have used more sauce though.
Overall, it's a pretty average pizza joint and I like it better than Singas across the street. However, I prefer the regular sized NY style pizza with a crispier crust!
This was a middle of the pack type of establishment. My boyfriend had eaten here many times in the past, but years ago, and maybe the ownership or cook changed, but it wasn't as good as he had remembered.
The pizza didn't seem like a real authentic style, where it's big, hearty, cheesy and saucy slices. It seemed more like a piece of dough, or formula pizza of chain establishments. Wasn't memorable enough to describe right now nor go back. Their chicken wings were good thing. Big and meaty, but had a lot of fat on them.
We haven't gone back since, and we now prefer Gino's which is closer and their slices are just the right thickness and style.
Waiting time is a little long, but their pizza is delicious. The vegetables are fresh and juicy, and the dough has a perfect crispness. The sauce is not that tasty though. They also have a big menu with many non-pizza items.
This place has excellent personal pan pizza's. Sometimes the wait can be long, but its a fresh pie each time you eat there. I used to eat this stuff so much as a kid, now I make sure to have at least 3 pies a year to make sure I remember how that crust tastes. There is nothing to compare an Elmhurst famous pie to, nothing. Its different than any other pizza you can get in Queens, or the city for that matter. The dough, the sauce and cheese… not sure what it is that gives it the distinct flavors that everybody has come to know and love.
The owner refused to give a policeman a little cup of extra sauce on the side. He said he would pay for it and the owner still said no he doesn't make pizza like that. Very strange and really turned me off. Dude! it's cheap pizza! Your not the God of pizza making! Give the guy the extra sauce and if you're cheap about it then charge him a buck. I can't believe he refused to give him that. I order the bacon pizza it was good but its nothing special. That whole ordeal with that cop just really bothered me where I swear I thought the owner was joking but he wasn't. Looks like I'll be going to Singas across the street from now on. Horrible business man! Maybe the sauce at this place comes from a special can from Christ himself or something. Get over yourself man!!
