  1. Have dined at Elsa's quite a few times during the past 6 years or so and it has never been a greAt experience. The food is just OK, service is never great either.

Decided to try yet again a few weeks ago after some time and it was awful! We were overcharged due to lack of experience and menu knowledge of the female server, which she admitted to but did nothing about to correct or credit us. We ordered chicharron de pollo that was super dry, hard and overcooked. We also had a fresh pineapple juice or shake that was not very good AND we ordered chicharron de pescado which was well done but really tasteless (surprisingly because their food is mostly too seasoned as the chicken was).  Needless to say, we will NOT be returning after the mistakes made by the server (there were quite a few) and by the food that was not good.

Try Lulas in Bergenfield. MUCH BETTER FOOD, SERVICE AND PRICES! i really do not like to knock places down like this but c'mon get your act together! Lulas is soooo much better in Bergenfield!

  2. This is a great neighborhood spot for authentic Domincan food if you live in Teaneck and do not want to cross the GWB to get to Washington Heights!

The chicharrón is the best! And some of their other staple dishes that you must try are their roasted chicken, fried pork chops and chicharrón mofongo; to name a few.

I have been here many times and the only thing that really bothers me about their business is there inconsistency with their selection of food (I have been here before where they literally ran out of roasted chicken and it was still a few hours before closing) and their poor customer service (I called my order in advance for pick up only to get there and wait minutes longer…just to find out my order had been sitting on the counter the whole time …

If they fixed these inconsistencies I am sure they would get much better reviews, because their food is pretty good.

  3. elsa's has the best mofongo this side of the hudson…we enjoyed it on a friday night with a large group of family…i would give elsa's 5 stars, but unfortunately service was incredibly slow that night…we got there at 7pm and didnt leave until 10pm since the whole restaurant was being waited on my TWO waiters….other than that the food was amazing…my morir sonando took me back to my childhood….so delicous…the house special appetizer which included chicharon and longaniza was fresh and delicious….the chicharron was just perfect, crispy but not too fatty….my tilapia was cooked perfectly….my mom's shrimp mofongo was just amazing…so hearty and full of flavor….elsa's is a great option for when ur not in the mood to deal with the horrible parking and ridiculous wait at casa del mofongo in washington heights….we'll definitely be back.

  4. Have been here many times but finally decided to post a review. Tried the monfongo tonight with chicharron which  was very good. Also have has the arroz con pollo which I would recommend. Service is a little slow when they are busy.  Saturday nights they have Karaoke at 10:30 which all tables were already reserved when we got there at 9:30. They let us eat but we couldn't stay which was a little disappointing but we know for next time.

  5. Elsa La Reina del Chicharrón is a little gem in Teaneck and probably the best restaurant out of their entire chain.  The food is standard Spanish fare which are all pretty good but they have a few exceptional standouts.

I highly recommend the Mofongo Chicharrón which they make out of Yucca instead of the standard Plantanos.  They always include big pieces of fried pork in the Mofongo and it is just delicious through and through.  Another dish that is exceptional is their pork chops which are extremely tasty and juicy and come in thick slabs unlike the thin chops you might buy at the supermarket.

I think where they really excel though is in their Arroz Con Pollo which is probably the best I've ever had.  It's very tasty, the ingredients are fresh and the cilantro really brings out a nice flavor overall to the dish.

Give it a shot and finish it up with a Tres Leche which they make very well.

  6. Elsa La Reina del Chicharron's Sunday-only all you can eat brunch buffet offers tasty fatty home-cooking style Dominican fare for only $12.95!!! You get a wide variety of solid quality Dominican dishes, and even comes with a dessert! One of the best values in the area! Me gusta!!

I came to this casual no-frills Dominican eatery for the first time with my Hispanic friends including a Dominican friend today. They were very accomodating to set up a table for more than 15 of us without any reservation. My Hispanic friends love this place, especially their chicharron.  Although I opted for the buffet , I got to try my friend's mangu, which is not included in the buffet. Mangu is a typical Dominican breakfast dish made of mashed platano. It was too heavy for me, and wasn't too impressed with the flavor – definitely not my favorite dish. However, I highly recommend cafe con leche which is not included in the buffet. It's only $1.25 and so tasty!!! It's different from cafe con leche of Spain, Dominican version has "canela" (cinnamon) in it which gives a nice exotic aroma and flavor.

These were the highlights of the buffet:

    1) Arroz – you can choose from 4 different kinds of rice, but I liked arroz con habichuela y gandules. 3.5 stars
    2) Sancocho : 4.5 stars!! This Dominican soup with chicken and platano was excellent! So flavorful!!!
    3) Pollo al Horno : 4 stars. I like how they marinated the chicken,  tasty!
    4) Bacalao : 3.5 stars. I usually don't like bacalao because most places serve it too salty. This bacalao wasn'r overly salty and was properly seasoned.
    5) Chicharron de pollo: 4 stars. Elsa lives up to her name, she's "la reina" indeed! This twice-cooked crispy deep-friend chicken is yummy but this is definitely not helping me lose weight! I feel like I gained 4lb in 1 day!

This place is definitely not for diet-consciout folks, or those who don't appreciate Caribbean food or Hispanic food in general. But for those who do, you've found a gem! Check it out!

  7. I'm reviewing this based on delivery only I have not eating in the restaurant itself.

Roasted chicken here is the bomb. Fall off the bone and for a half chicken with rice and your choice of side how can you beat that for $7.99. They offer a mini lunch option which is just a smaller portion with a can of soda for $4.99 from 11 AM-6 PM.

Delivery time depends on when you order. Naturally peak hours will have a longer wait time but they are usually pretty quick.

A lot of the guys at my job love the oxtail stew they serve there. I'm not about that oxtail life so I stick with the chicken. Their chicharon is really good here, big fat meaty pieces of fried pork. Worth trying out!

  8. The food is everything here. It is too good to be true, but its true. Arroz con pollo was delicious!! So much flavor in the rice and the chicken was super soft. The mofongo with chicken was delicious also.

I would only do take out here because the service when you dine in is horrible. You have to hunt for the server.
