  1. I've tried a great deal of West Indian restaurants in the Crown Heights/Prospect Lefferts Gardens/Flatbush area and this one has probably been one of the if not the best. Everything looked good on the baked goods front and I'm not even one to typically buy baked goods but I tried the coconut raisin bread. It was absolutely amazing. I also saw a marble pound cake staring at me and had to have it as well.  It was phenomenal. And the prices on those baked good are so cheap. $1.50- $2.50.  I even tasted a pineapple tart that my friend ordered which was pretty good as well.  As for the hearty meal options, I went with the Ox Tails and it as perfect with fresh rice and peas and a choice of raw or steamed vegetables.  I got them streamed and really enjoyed them as well.  I had some hesitation at how quickly my meal came up but once I bit into the first bite, my apprehensions quickly subsided.  Everything was great and I'll definite return to try every baked good that they make and probably have some jerk chicken or curry goat. I usually measure the West Indian restaurants based on how well they do one of those two meals.  I have a feeling that they'll be greatness as well.

  2. Simple but great. I would think nothing of this place because it's like a neighborhood spot, unpresuming and all looks basic but with a very indulgent in how well it looks baked. Yes, the pastries are good. Pretty darn good.

I didn't order it but that dark potato pudding pie slices looked good.

I bit into the coconut roll and it was flaky good. It was thick and I felt each layer of crisp dough, soft, lightly sweat and flavorful. The coconut was lightly present but I loved the caramelized bottom. Man, that pastry was tasty. And it was priced right.

I order some other pastries I didn't get to taste yet because they are still in the fridge.

Right on leaving I ate the Jamaican beef patty as a little snack or extra from my main meal. I thought that Jamaican beef patty was okay. The dough was soft and very mellow in taste, meaning a bland dough, not so crispy. The inside was just mush beef, not much flavor. Forget the patties, go for the baked goods, those are very good.

Inside is an ATM and two stools facing the way, not much of a dining place. Order and go but truly recommended for price and great tasting pastries. Cool staff/dude taking my order. Didn't mind me asking a few questions.

Happy Easter. They have a full baked bun of a loaf for this day.

  3. Flaky, crispy goodness. I like crispy patties, and I cannot lie *sing it with me!*

What makes a good patty (in my humble opinion):
    1) Crispy, flaky pastry – not flaky like a croissant, but denser with a more substance to it. For those who like a more bready/soft pasty, sorry, not my cup of tea.
    2) Spicy
    3) juicy meat

Errol's blew the crispyness out of the water – fantastic.

On 2, I wish it was a bit spicier – it was to bland for me. Probably good to appeal to the masses, but I'd suggest they have they should have different kinds.

    Overall a good patty.

  4. My go-to for jerk chicken and current rolls. Real good service that's prompt and friendly. Can't grubbing on some home made caribbean cuisine.

  5. A few weeks ago I was in the neighborhood looking at apartments.  After seeing a place I really liked, I asked the real estate agent where I could get something to eat.  After he rattle off a few generic options I stopped him and said I wanted jerk chicken.  Yes, jerk mother fucking chicken.  I love jerk chicken, I never get to have it, and I knew there were a lot of options in the neighborhood.  Enter Errol's.  It was only 5 blocks away and is situated right on a corner.  It's a bakery but it makes a variety of West Indian food.  After talking politics a bit with the guy behind the counter and grabbing a small jerk chicken platter for like $6, I headed out and ate everything on the subway ride home.  Don't hate.

The jerk chicken was pretty damn addictive.  First off the sauce was on the side which made eating neater and also controlled the spice level.  It was a bit heavy on the vinegar but also flavorful and very hot.  The chicken quality was decent and I got plenty of skin which is *always* a good thing.  They chopped up the bird, breaking the bones which I'm not crazy about, but most take out places do that.  The rice, plantains, and veggies were all great.  This wasn't fancy eating, but it was a great homestyle meal that was well worth the price and was needed at the time.

If I end up nearby I'll be a regular.  Sure I'd check out the other places nearby, but this seems reliable given the regulars I saw come in.  Besides, who doesn't like talking politics pre-meal?  It wets the appetitite!

  6. My boyfriend and his roommate live around the corner from Errol's and they stop by all the time. I've had the beef patty, jerk chicken platter, coconut cake and homemade lemonade — they're all awesome. The guy who seems to own or manage the place is so friendly and I'm happy to spend money at such a great local establishment.

  7. This small bakery is jam packed with all sorts of Caribbean goodies, from coco bread to black cake to patties to cupcakes and cakes with brightly colored frostings that make you wonder if you will glow neon afterwards. I only bought veggie patties the day I went, wanting to save my stomach for Peppa's. The patties, at $1.75 for the veggie won, was substantial, with a tasty filling and a flaky but solid crust. I'd go back and try the other flavors on another day..they have ackee and calloloo, which are vegetarian options I don't often see, along with the standard chicken, beef ones. Staff was efficient and brisk. Try to not debate too long or they will move on to another person who is ready. Errol's apparently even sells fish and jerk chicken, which I didn't see at the counters but perhaps was in the kitchen.  A one stop shop for breakfast, lunch and dessert.
