  1. This place is so-so. Delivery is fast, food is hit or miss.

I recommend getting the curries – the massaman curry was absolutely delicious and the $7 lunch specials (available online too) is a very generous portion.

I loved how getting it "spicy" actually means they make it REAL spicy. My eyes were almost getting watery.

The generic salad is actually pretty good. Usually at chinese take out places i toss it out because it sucks, but the peanut dressing is really fantastic.

The soups are just meh. The soup of the day tasted like water mixed with oil, and the Tom Yum soup was kind of a gross tangy tomato soup. Definitely not made for American palettes.

The spring rolls – pretty good. I loved the sweet chili sauce they come with.

I was real excited for the Pad-see-Ew since its their popular item, but it had such a "burnt" taste to it. I got it with crispy pork which was ok, a bit too chewy. I would definitely not order again.

So overall, decent food IF you get the right things.

  2. As far as Thai food in New York is concerned, Esan is as good as it gets! My friend and I stopped by for a late lunch/early dinner last night, and everything was delicious. We shared orders of the spring rolls, the papaya salad, and the tofu Pad Thai. The spring rolls, wrapped in a light rice film, were filled with tofu, cucumber, and carrot, and accompanied by a flavorful dipping sauce. The papaya salad was a tad spicy- just like it should be- and filled with fresh garlic. And the Pad Thai was perfectly-prepared, and tasty at that! I highly recommend Esan if you are in the mood for solid Thai food.

  3. I've ordered from here a couple of times and usually get the pad see ew or the chicken sautéed garlic pepper on rice. Both are so yummy.  It had really good flavor and it is not greasy or oily. I also like that they use an assortment of veggies (broccoli, carrots, bok choy, string beans) that comes with the sautéed garlic pepper.

I plan on trying some of their other dishes,  such as curry. I can't wait!

  4. just far enough that I can't walk here on lunch breaks, but since I work on the DMZ between Sunnyside and LIC (what will the real estate think tanks call it next: LICSide? Sunny Island City?), they do deliver to my building. on bad weather days, I prefer to just hit up Seamless rather than patronize the mediocre dining options in our building. Esan is on Seamless and I'm a fan thusfar,

their green papaya salad is one of the best, freshest and flavorful ones I've had. the first time, I ordered one along with my lunch special because (a) I had to hit the delivery minimum and (b) I was starving. I think I actually enjoyed it more than the main dish!

I'm also pleased with the level of spice they put into their cooking.

the jungle curry is good but I like the various other curries better. as I found out, jungle curry is a style which does not include coconut milk, so it does tend to become a bit soupy by the time it arrives. I feel that getting it at the restaurant might be better.

portion size and pricing are pretty fair, and their delivery is reliable even in bad weather.
