Former White Horse Tavern that is now a 50s-esque rock n' roll bar. Interesting food menu (banana spiders, beet chips) but they do have a $5 burger. Keeping it real on 2nd Avenue.
Maybe I hyped the place up in my head, but I have to say I was really underwhelmed Ethyl.
We could have been such great friends, I mean we have so much in common:
*Close proximity to one another
*We both dig rock n' roll
*You offered me bar food
*You stand out of the crowd that is bars around 86th, I stand out of a crowd like Hodor
*You're into cheap happy hours, and so am I!
*Crappy 70's movies with boobies flying about
*The love of alcohol
But it just was not meant to be I suppose. I think it's that you're trying a little too hard, and you don't need to be! Let me know when you figure yourself out, I'd love to give this another shot.
~XOXO
P.S your happy hour deal is super
P.P.S. stop with the fatty bacon it's gross and freaked me out.
New Fun , Funkadelic addition to the upper east side. Nothing like this upper east with 70's inspired lights, movies playing and a funky disco type ball and lights creatively lighting up the back area of the bar and small dance floor. A downtown type bar brought uptown.
The owners' objective was to make a fun neighborhood feeling bar, where everyone feels welcome: that they've done with their fantastic, friendly service and incredibly red rad 70's theme and decor.
The layout makes the bar conducive to conversation in the center or tables out front while being able to enjoy the disco type dance area in back or (a little later in the night) entertainers in front of you choose. Tables along the side and a long amazingly decorated bar are great for sitting and having conversation, and there are some tables outside as well if you're more into people watching.
They are developing a lineup of entertainment many days of the week including dancers some nights, comedians one night a week, and a gay inspired night Mondays. Two Gogo dancers came on around 9 dancing in two designated spots one visible from an open window facing 2nd avenue as passers by snapped photos – entertaining without being over the top or distracting since they stayed in one spot.
The managers really are impressively passionate and excited about Ethyl's: friendly, present, so eager to talk about the thought that went into the decor and bringing this downtown type spot uptown. Adam in particular was impressively enthusiastic.
I had a Hotpants Punch off the menu – very good and I'm eager to try the Mezcel drink they're putting on the menu.
They also have a solid food menu with a born and raised New Yorker Chef (Paul Gerard) who has an
Impressive list of experience and drove much of the concept of Ethyl's and its 70's based theme and decor . This visit we just had a cocktail, and I'm looking forward to going back for food another time.
Highly recommend as a fun spot that's definitely unique to the upper east side.
I've been to Ethyl's twice now and love the overall theme and feel of the place. It is dark, retro and usually has amazingly bad old movies playing along with star wars on the other screen. I've only been for happy hour which is a fairly good deal. Well drinks are bogo ($8) and they have a beer and shot special for 8 (gansett and well shot). The bartenders are pretty friendly and like to joke around and chat. I've not been there when it is very busy so I cannot tell you if they are super attentive in that environment. Happy hour gets the job done though so I'd give that a 4 star.
Now what makes me give it a 3? The food. Not particularly fantastic. We grabbed burgers, fries and nachos. Everything was crazy salted. I get that you want people to drink more but I felt like I was being preserved. The 5$ burgers are pretty small which doesn't bother me in the slightest. However the bacon was just a slab of pure fat which was so unappetizing. At the very least, those fatty thick cuts should be seared pretty well. The fries were fried well but again, covered in so much salt that I had to use ketchup to mask it. My friend had the nachos which received the same salt filled review.
If I am returning to Ethyl's, it is for the happy hour. I'd rather get a buzz and head to one of the many other restaurants in the area to fill my belly with food.
