  1. This is a cute little neighborhood spot we stumbled on in Bedstuy for my birthday lunch. It was all but empty so we really got to see everything at its best.

My favorite part of this restaurant is the bathroom. I love all the artwork on the wall, its all different and it's like a mini gallery. I also loved to soap, it's literally like soap on a stick you have to like rub this soap stick, it very gloriously  inappropriate and fun all at the same time, kind of like a shake weight.

Since we were the only patrons we obviously were served immediately. The menu is light, sandwiches and salads. I had both and my sister had a salad.
Both where fresh and light and nice and health. I had a chicken avocado sandwich with a fried egg, it was ok. I ended up taking the sandwich apart and just adding the chicken, avocado (spread), and egg to my salad. There was like 3 layers of bread which mad it difficult to bite. None the less the place was a great stop and I would come back again.

  2. I am new to the neighborhood, much like Eugene & Co, and had a late brunch there to celebrate moving into my new digs. The food is great (I had poached egg over kale with goat cheese & red sauce, + an almond croissant from Balthazar), all tasty. But I agree with another reviewer who wrote that the portions were tiny. My friend had the biscuits and gravy… I'm from the South and have never seen such tiny biscuits with such a small dollop of gravy! That said, service was great and the space is gorgeous. Mixed feelings!

  3. More places are starting to pop up in this side of Bed Stuy–and Eugene & Co is a nice welcome. I've been here twice, once for solo dinner and once for a late brunch, and both times the service was friendly and the food was good.

For dinner I had a bunch of small plates, and really took to the fried tomatoes, which I don't see on the menu anymore but trust me, they were good. During brunch, I had my fair share of bloody mary's, which were excellently spicy. I also had the avocado toast, which was served on a hearty piece of grain bread and was super filling. I almost wanted to order another one, but I kept it together.

What I really enjoy about Eugene & Co is the warm feeling I get when dining there–it really is a place for everyone in the neighborhood. I look forward to many more meals here!

  4. Eugene & Co. is cute! I visited late last night around 10:00pm and was immediately seated by the kind hostess. We had to order from the late night menu, and unfortunately there wasn't much of a selection. Cheese boards, salad, veggies and a meat loaf sandwich. I ordered a salad and the meat loaf sandwich and split it with friend. The food was delicious! I just wish there was more of a selection to choose from. Would love to try this place for brunch or dinner, where I can explore a greater variety of dishes offered. All is good at Eugene & Co., but be prepared for a very minimal late night menu. If you're looking for steak and potatoes after 10pm — you won't be getting it here!

  5. Eugene and Co. is where I want to go to treat myself! It's the kind of place that not only looks stunning but everything you eat and drink makes you smile.

I try to have low key Sundays to recharge before the work week. I took a quick B38 bus ride from Bushwick on a Sunday and walked about 5 blocks. Lots of Bed-Stuy was already a sleep by 6pm. I walked into Eugene's and I quickly noticed the design details from the feather-like chandelier to the white washed walls. It was reminiscent of  the older and beautiful restaurants in the garden district of New Orleans.

I found myself a nice little spot at the bar. It wasn't too crowded but you could tell there were some neighborhood regulars. I felt like treating myself. I went over the wine list and was drawn to the Spanish wine. And when it arrived, just by smell, I knew I had made the right choice. I took my time looking over the menu. The albacore tuna was calling my name but I went for something light instead. The salad "spring greens" mentioned beets and fennel. I love beets and thought that would be perfect with my wine too.

The bartender asked if I would like bread. I of course, said yes, like the bad New Yorker that I am. Someone else can count their calories. Tonight is all about me. When the bread arrived it was served in what looked like a paper bag but after closer inspection you can see these are bags that were made to look like a tossable bag but are instead reusable and crafted. And then I had a nice side of buttah! yum! And tiny little bowls for the salt and pepper.  The bread is sourced from local bakery and recent fave, Saraghina.

I swear this is one of the best salads I've ever had. Sometimes the best salad has the least ingredients. It's the details that made this salad spectacular, the shaved paper thin beets and fennel and the candied fennel seeds were spectacular. I would have never even thought of candying spices to add sweetness and dimension to the salad. The goat cheese was light and airy. This salad was meticulously thought out, simple and most importantly delicious.

As I was drooling over the salad and devouring the meal. The bartender asked me how my meal was. I was like "it's incredible". And the woman next to me said, I didn't have to be so kind. Turns out the owner herself, Tara Oxley, was enjoying the albacore right next to me. And as we chatted, her eye for details comes from her background in design. Oxley was very humble and extremely nice.

I will be coming back for brunch and for that tuna very soon.

Also have to add I ended up chatting up with another regular and we were insta-friends. We chatted and enjoyed maybe one too many glasses of wine and some chocolate. Life is short and sometimes you have to spend a little moolah and take care of numero uno. And you gotta laugh the night away! Because life is worth more than money!

  6. Arrived with 3 friends around 8pm on Friday night and were seated immediately – my guess is that will not last.

It's pretty dark inside but enough light for patrons to crane their necks around checking out what is being served to nearby tables.

I drank beer which was a good price ($4 Busch can/$7 for fancy pints) $11 cocktails were competent – Negroni was the tastiest.

Cheese plate was probably the highlight of my night. We went with the large ($17) version. 6 pretty generous portions of cheese along with a splendid honey and some Key Food grapes (low point of the evening) that nonetheless did not taint the board. Meat board was pretty standard for the neighborhood but more generous than Saraghina.

For dinner we split the pork belly appetizer, seafood pasta, chicken and short ribs. Pork belly was the highlight with some balanced greens, a little ginger and some watermelon cubes. The other entrees used somewhat more daring seasoning – difficult to process but definitely interesting flavors.

Table also split the market vegetable board – came with watermelon radish, golden beet and shaved Brussels sprouts. The sprouts were the best but all were enjoyable.

Finished up with milk & cookies – cookies were pretty great – salty and sweet pretty warm and gooey chocolate. Choice of milks – we went with almond.

Our server was cordial and responded pretty well.

My recommendation would be to go for drinks, split a meat and cheese board and maybe go for the biscuits (I'll be sampling those on my next visit)

  7. Creative and fresh menu, super small portions. They aren't kidding when they say "small dishes". I am not one to eat much. I usually am stuffed with an app and a salad. However after having 3 small dishes on a Sunday night here, I found myself starving. They were out of chicken and all the other entree options were red meat. The ingredients are clearly fresh and the flavors are there. The fact that everything was delicious made it that more aggravating that the portions were only a few bites. The ambience is super artsy and hipster. This place is definitely a hidden spot in the hood.

  8. Good, not great. The waitstaff is SUPER friendly and the ambiance is nice, so it's a perfectly solid neighborhood spot. I live down the street so I've been several times for brunch and dinner. The food (especially the meatloaf!) has always been tasty, but nothing too exceptional.

For the quality, I personally think it's a little overpriced, but that won't stop me from returning for a quick drink/bite here and there.
