Great sandwich/deli shop with an eclectic vibe. Stop in here for a sandwich and walk out with wine, liquor, craft beer or some fun little gift items.
The food is solid and tasty, all at very reasonable prices. A nice variety of sandwiches, both hot and cold, as well as paninis, soups, egg sandwiches, salads and burgers. One of my favorites is the breaded chicken with swiss, onions and russian dressing – YUM!
The layout itself is interesting. A full selection of wine and a small variety of liquors and beer. There's also a handful of gifts like chocolates, knick knacks, seasonal items and oddities. Even if you don't want to buy any of these things, it makes for interesting conversation and ambiance. Super casual, inexpensive, great for lunch and they have high chairs to bring the little ones, though seating is sometimes limited during the busier hours.
It used to be a highly priced convenience store/market/liquor store.
Now it doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.
The selection is paltry and erratic, the prices are still high. I've been in a few times, and never seem to buy anything, as I just seem to get confused as to why I'm there.
I must have driven by Fairchilds thousands of times before stopping in purely out of curiosity. "What is that place?" Given its name, it sounds like…a market, and I don't really go to a lot of markets. But something told me that it was more than that. Maybe it was the Pal's burgers sign out front or smoke coming out of the chimney one winter.
At a glance from curb-side it appears to not have any parking, given that it's located right on Roseland Avenue. That also dissuaded me. But in reality, there's plenty of parking in the back. You just have to drive around the right side to see.
I find it interesting though. Very eclectic. Well kept. Wine, deli food, burgers, donuts, sodas, etc. I'm not sure that I would classify it as a market though. But I wouldn't classify it as a deli either, or a liquor store, even though they sell cold cuts and plenty of wine. Maybe more of a country store…
Whatever it is, it serves the purpose for me, which is a place to essentially stop in for a quick bite to eat after work without having a long wait.
This is part deli, part small cafe type restaurant (at front of store) and part gift shoppe.
For $8.01, I got the "turkey gobbler" wrap, which was really good! Turkey with stuffing and cranberries with a tub of hot gravy on the side.
The store itself looks like an old fashioned country store and has lots of interesting gift type items laying about for sale such as unusually labeled wines, handmade soaps, crafty type items and gift baskets.
The sales help is very pleasant also……
However, I think almost $10 for a lunchtime sandwich is kind of pricey. When did sandwiches get so expensive?
This place is such a hidden gem! Came here for lunch with my family – their salads are amazing. Everything in the menu looks delicious to say the least. The staff is so welcoming and friendly – especially the chefs!
Highly recommend and cannot wait to come back.
Decent selection of sandwiches and other homemade specialties.
De facto location for some of Pal's Cabin offerings now that they are closed. Prices are reasonable and you can dine in as well.
This Roseland institution gets pretty busy at lunch for all of the obvious reasons. Now that they expanded a few years ago you can order your sandwich and sit there to eat it. The quality meats and their rye always goes down so good. I love having projects in the area just to look forward to lunch there.
The basic bologna and cheese is as good as their sloppy joes and their creations. There is something for everybody.
This is a great little neighborhood store. The sandwiches are great. The meats are good. But, unfortunately, you really do pay extra for the convenience. I think I spent about $14 on a sandwich, a little thing of macaroni salad and a drink. Based on the prices, I would have to call this place UnFairChild's Market. 😛 No, in all fairness, they're okay. I suppose the quality is there to warrant the price. Three stars, coulda been four, but I've been given those out a little too frequently, gotta tighten up on that.
