Had brunch here on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I liked the interior and feel of the place, everyone was polite and laid back. Started with a Bloody, not your usual churn n burn brunch Bloody Mary, had good floor and nice kick. It was a little on the small side for 9$ though.
The Duck Confit and Hash was absolutely delicious. Really, something special, I was not that hungry but at the moment I wish I could have had more. And not skimpy on the duck either. Nice. I had a side order of fried potatoes. I didn't realize that the hash, I should have known, came with them so I'd a bit of a starch overload. No bother as I love me some taters. I'd go back for dinner when I am in the area.
Terribly disappointing experience with brunch.
Walking past the sign that says "Keep calm and eat bacon" we naturally couldn't resist! The atmosphere of the place is quite appealing and we were seated fairly quick. Most tables were occupied but there didn't seem to be a super busy vibe going. Menu options were good and we were looking forward to sharing challah French toast with strawberries, rhubarb, whipped cream, and maple syrup and mushroom omelette with a side of bacon. We also ordered two iced coffees, sangria, and a blueberry gin fizz. After 20 min or so, we attempted to get our waiter's attention since not only did we not get coffee/drinks, we didn't even get water; however, no success. Shortly after, our food came out and we asked about the drinks – water was served. The food looked yummy but definitely came short on the flavors and quality. French toast was just … Overdone I guess, the bread was hard and far from the fluffy deliciousness you expect from challah French toast. Rhubarb purée was nice but the strawberries were absolutely not fresh – not only did they look it but you could taste the fact that they've been around for a few days … The omelette also lacked flavor, well actually salt was basically the overpowering flavor of the dish and had none of the fluffy texture of a good omelette. Don't get me started on the bacon! For $5 you get a plate of four strips (may be 5) of that paper-thin-super- well-done bacon you generally get at a hotel chain all you can eat buffet breakfast – so disappointing!!!! About 2/3 through the meal, we got our iced coffee … We asked for sugar and milk but unfortunately got none. As I was about to ask for the check, I see our waiter carrying my sangria and politely advised that we're not going to have the drinks as we're done eating and would like our check. I noticed a couple of unpleasant looks as he proceeded to tell the bartender that we weren't going to take the drinks. Nothing like a bad food experience – this, was definitely it.
Excellent food! Best octopus I've ever had, super tender. Foie gras was also excellent and steak was super unique. All-around a great culinary experience.
We wandered in here at 9:30 on Halloween night, and were seated immediately in a quiet corner of the restaurant that included our party of three and two empty tables. YES – a quiet table, we were happy.
We had drinks, and set about a three course meal, beginning with an ample tasting of the three cheeses on the menu, with some sort of nuts, and some stewed/marinated…prunes? Not sure, but great with the cheese and toast. Oh! Also great bread on the table with seasoned butter – a little different, and delish.
We tried three appetizers, and split them all among us:
Corn and cheese sort of salad – tasty, not skimpy
Foie Gras (I know, I know) – well cooked, excellent sauce, weird cookie pieces on the side
Octopus with tomato jam and breadcrumbs – probably my favorite dish we had that night – the tomato jam was out of this world (If you put it in jars, I'd buy a case)
We all had our own entrees, and my husband said his was the best chicken he's ever had – the other two of us did NOT get a bite, heh. Steak was good, cooked to temperature, and featured a type of potato I'm told was good. The fish of the day had a nice crust on it, the bok choy was a little undercooked, but there was a ridiculously tasty cream substance underneath everything – turnip? Rutabaga? Whatever it was, it was awesome.
Excellent service, right there when we needed something, great about refills on water, and paced everything very well. Super friendly and helpful, explained everything we had questions about, and rocked some super sweet costumes like pros. Thanks for such a great evening!
We would go back for a special occasion, or if we're just in the area again and hungry. Definitely a solid choice.
Popped over to Fat Goose for dinner over Valentine's Day weekend. The restaurant was far quieter on a Saturday night than I would've expected but the decor and ambiance was still quite decent and turned out to be exactly what we were looking for in an intimate dinner setting. Service was on point, the hostess and waiters were all extremely tentative as well as the manager who stopped by on several occasions.
Given that it was Valentine's Day weekend we opted for the pre-fix menu given several glasses of wine were paired with the meal creating a deal too good to pass on. The first wine was a sparkling white wine and almost too closely bordered a champagne. The red wine served with the main course was much better. The food was delicious although nothing memorable. Tough to say I'd seek it out again given I live in Manhattan but would certainly recommend it as a trendy option to those in need of a last minute dinner spot.
Very cute restaurant! The food was pretty good and the staff was friendly. The ambiance was calm, but nice. It was pretty unoccupied for a Friday night.. I think this place deserves a good 4 stars and you should give it a try 🙂
We shared the octopus, scallops, tomato salad and the duck confit. The tomato salad was delicious. Bright flavors. Yum. The octopus and the scallops were also very good. The duck confit was good. The duck could have been prepared better. The duck was less flavorful and less rich as other duck confit we have had. The service was good.
An interesting spot towards the end of civilization in Williamsburg near the East River.
An open space with table seating for 25 and bar spots for another 15. The corner location has large plate glass windows looking out on Wythe Ave & N 8th St not far from Brooklyn Brewing Co.
The entree menu is simple and covers the proteins well – pork, beef, chicken, fish and a vegetarian option. One preparation of each, none of which are particularly creative. That said, simple done well is the play and it works well. An appetizer section is confused and jumps from Mediterranean to Italian to South American influences.
A hearty bread is served with soft butter and fennel seed. The crunch of the seeds with the soft bread and thick butter is unusual and a successful party trick.
Hand torn pasta with wild mushrooms and grated parmesan is a hearty vegetarian dish. That said, it would benefit greatly from the use of chicken broth in it's preparation and a dash of salt. The pasta itself soaked up the broth nicely and the mushrooms lent an deep earthy flavor that was piqued by the sharp cheese. Swiss chard binds the thin broth and the pasta.
The seared duck breast atop a lentil pomegranate salad with pureed celeriac is a variation of the dish that is virtually a the restaurants name sake – except its the wrong kind of waterfowl. Ultra crips skin is removed, crisped up even more and then used to hide the medium rare preparation of the sliced duck breast. Sitting to the side but carrying the duck throughout is a confit preparation of pulled duck in the shape of a hockey puck. Luscious, the meat clings to the celeriac puree.
The meal takes a long time to arrive and there is an even longer time inbetween appetizers and entrees. The reason this is so strange is that the restaurants was virtually empty while we were there – two other tables. None the less, the service was polite and friendly.
I do see why the place is empty though – the owners seem to disagree with and dispute in a rather snarky way any feedback left on yelp. That's totally the wrong way to fix something as opposed to further training of your team and thanking a customer for the feedback while pretending that nothing happened. Oh well. We all have to learn some how.
