  1. I ordered a mango mousse cake from Fay Da Bakery (who knew they had a website?!) and picked it up from this location. The employees were pretty nice and explained that since the top of the cake was rather gelatinous, they could not write "Happy Birthday" on it. Instead, they provided me with a little sign that said "Happy Birthday" and a few candles. The cake was delicious! It was fresh not too sweet. I would definitely order a cake from here again.

  2. It's OK here. Very large space with a lot of seating. But when I went in May, oh man was it blistering hot! No air condition, and I just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.

I normally love lots of things from Chinese bakeries: red bean bun, hot dog bun, etc, but this time I was really craving a fruit tart. They looked really good, and I ended up getting three.

They weren't that good — I prefer the ones from Chinatown instead.

The crust was very thick, and hard to eat, mainly because it seemed like there were ground nuts in them or something. Also altered the taste a bit. Custard was flavorful. The fruit looked great, but some of them were not ripe, so it lacked sweetness and was way too firm. Also, it wasn't cheap — at $2.25 it's significant, or maybe prices have gone up all around and I haven't caught up haha.

The cakes looked good, but it seems a lot of them were more mousse like, and I prefer a fluffier and cake like dessert.

I would consider coming back here again, but I was pretty turned off when I saw either an employee or customer (they were too close together to tell which one) sneeze on the buns. Some of the plastic bins/covering were open, exposing the food to the germs.

  3. We came here for a snack. They had fresh soy milk so that's always exciting since that's harder to get in Chicago. We had some soy milk and then I had a taro puff. My husband had the scallion twist and then we had an egg tart to share. I love taro so i love my taro puff. It was packed full of taro filling, although it did get kind of squished when I used the tongs to get it on the tray. My husband liked the scallion bread. We both thought the egg tart was very good. It was still warm and the custard had a nice egg flavor. Wish we had Asian bakeries like this in Chicago.

  4. I often stop in on my way to the subway to pick up a sandwich for lunch at work.
Sandwiches range from $1.95 – $2.75 and come on white or whole wheat with a choice of ham or turkey.
You can't beat that, at least not for those prices.

  5. The pastries here are edible, but pretty cheap, not the best quality stuff by a long shot. The Neapolitan cake is alright, the garlic bun is decent.

Also service is pretty rude. I waited for two cashiers to stop their conversation and take my order. When that didn't happen I interrupted them and told them I was ready to order. My server was nice until she asked what I wanted, and I told her a slice of the Neapolitan cake. She didn't know what I was talking about, and out of nowhere she became really irritated. This is an item YOU sell, you should know it, and…what on earth are you upset about? She even had trouble finding it when I pointed it out to her. She rung me up with a sour expression and not another word. Whatever.

  6. You can't really go wrong with most Chinese bakeries. Fay Da is a well known chain. Cheap pastries, breads, sweets, cakes…even if you're not satisfied with an item, you're only a dollar and change short, plus you can easily find something else to eat. Coffee is crap, milk tea is much better.

  7. This Fay-Da has really cleaned up their act here. The store has new furniture and has expanded itself with more diverse baked items.

Out of all the Fay-Da's that I have been to this is is my favorite for there are more tables than the one's in Forest Hills. Not a mob scene like Tai Pan or 88 Bakery. The staff is friendly and helpful. Not just ring you up and collect money from you like many of these Asian Bakeries.

I see more variety of Croissants with different fillings like the one's you see at Au Bon Pain.

Folks this is a neighborhood one. The regular peeps are friendly and if they see you looking for seats they motion you to join them or let you know they done, so you can sit down.

They even leave the paper for the next patron to sit relax, eat and read the paper.

My favorite is the corn and ham bun. The middle is creamy- other bakeries do not make them the same way. Wonder if they put more mayonnaise in the center, but it is good.

Have not tried their cakes or cold drinks. Will be back again for sure.

  8. This is the go-to Chinese bakery in Elmhurst. It is the biggest one in the neighborhood and is actually bigger than most of the other Fay Da locations in NYC as well.
There is a very large seating area and they have a much bigger selection of hot and cold food, with and without meat. There are also a lot of pastries and cakes and bubble tea available. Pretty much anything you can think of in the Chinatown bakeries is available in this place. I like to eat some buns with a hot milk tea.
