  1. My family decided on Fernandes for a belated birthday lunch for mom and the dining experience was top notch.

I firstly have to point out the exceptional service our waiter provided us.  Our waiter, John (who looked to be a veteran waiter) was so friendly and accommodating to all of our needs.  Upon ordering our entrees he quickly pointed out that the roast chicken my father ordered would take a half hour to cook.  Based on this, he made sure all of our dishes came out in unison, and during the wait he was quick to ask us if we needed anything and told us to partake in the various salad bar dishes.

Of note was that he graciously directed my father (who has a a little difficulty getting around nowadays) to the handicap bathroom that is located on the same floor as the dining area avoiding the regular bathroom which is located one floor down and only accessible via a stairwell.

Oh by the way, the food wasn't too shabby either ;).

Controlling myself from ordering the Rodizio since I'll be gorging on Thanksgiving, I ordered the Churrasco a Fernandes and it was awesome.  It consists of pretty much all the meat cuts available for the Rodizio but obviously not all you can eat.  There was the Picahna, flank steak, skirt steak, bacon wrapped steak, linguica, roast chicken, ham, and beef hearts.  A generous portion of French fries were also included, so this is a FULL meal.  In fact, I could eat only less than half of what was on the plate; leaving the rest for leftovers for two days.

Granted I'm a lightweight, but I can certainly hold my own when it's time to eat.

My sister ordered the ribeye which she was kind enough to bestow a few pieces for me was moist, a perfect medium rare, and had a great robust beef flavor.  It was an awesome tasting ribeye.

Mom had the grilled salmon which shocked her as the filet was much larger than she expected.  Not being a fan of salmon, I could only take her word on the salmon which she stated was cooked and seasoned very well.  Key thing she mentioned was how fresh it tasted.

Dad ordered the roast chicken.  My father likes to only buy fresh chicken from Asian markets so he can be picky on chicken, and he loved the roast chicken.  He stated it was very moist had a nice roasted chicken skin and seasoned very well too.

My mother and sister decided to end the meal with coffee and a blueberry creme brulee and based on their assessment, it was wonderfully rich with a silky cream and not overly sweet.

We all agreed that we had a great dining experience, which is something I rarely ever hear from my parents LOL!

*Apologies for grabbing only one photo as the dining room was a little dim and to get some good photos I would have to turn the flash on, and not wanting to disturb the other patrons with my flash, I abstained from taking another photo besides the one I posted.

  2. Went ritzy for lunch with the pops.. We were flipping starving and tired after going to dirty jerz for work. Stopped here before heading back to the safe haven homeland state that doesn't smell like petrochemical refineries and garbage..

We racked up a mighty fine bill but all in all, it was worth it.  Calamari app was great to share and perfect texture, not rubbery or bland. Didn't even need any sauce it was so good on its own. I was about to go ham with the seafood medley but changed my mind bc I already felt the food coma creepin up. Of course dad got it tho and damn it did look great– lobster, massive lump crab cake, scallops, jumbo shrimps and I believe two big pieces of sole. Idk how TF he finished it all. I opted for the garlic scallops with Portuguese potatoes. The potatoes were awesome, never had this type/cut/flavor and I love scallops but these 6 that came out, were bathed in a sauce that was just not to my liking. I ate two and took the rest home. Idk if it was too garlicky (which is almost impossible to my palate) or maybe I was just too exhausted. Whatever the case though, the seafood medley was by far a WIN. I wish I had gotten that and taken the rest home for leftover dinner.

If I came back to the area, I would fo sho make my way back here. Plus I still want to try their blue sangria!!

  3. I ate here with my family for Fathers' Day. It was pretty packed and it's not a large restaurant, so definitely make a reservation. Being a vegetarian, this place was kind of a nightmare for me, but I originally wasn't going to go. Nonetheless I had dessert and munched on some of the vegetables on the side.

This location used to be two other restaurants in the past. i guess someone opened up a 3rd location of Fernandes hence the 3 after it. Since it was Fathers' Day, the parking lot was completely packed. We parked on a nearby side street and walked to the entrance. I didn't see a sign indicating that it was Fernandes, but we just asked when we walked in. There aren't a ton of restaurants; it's a highway.

Service was okay. I kept getting bumped into while seated at the table and the servers weren't that friendly. If you like meat, there's tons of artery-clogging flesh for you to sink your teeth into. They do have some pasta dishes and seafood options, but specify if you are a vegetarian or have allergies. To be honest, I would avoid this place like the plague if you're not into the meat.

  4. We came here as a group of 12 and received solid service and decent food. No complaints- but also nothing to rave about.

As a table, we were drinking bottles of wine and pitchers of sangria. The classic red sangria is their clear winner. The "blue" (green) sangria just tastes like a kamikaze shot, probably due to massive amounts of blue curaçao.

Appetizers were chorizo- delicious, and calamari- pretty good. They were both served on a long platter, and the calamari came with marinara and sweet and sour sauce (!?). I wished there had been more nods to actual Brazilian and/or Portuguese flavors instead of Italian and Chinese.

Some of our party opted for the rodizio-style  dining. For a picky meat eater, this is not the best idea. For the diner who preferred meat well done (I know, not me!), it was next to impossible to find a cut of meat without some pink or red.  Sooo if you are not flexible with meat temperature, order something else.

I got the 16 ounce filet mignon with mushrooms and Marsala. 16 sounds like a lot right? but it was the only number displayed on the menu and I did not find out until the end of the meal from another diner that they will serve 12 ounce filets upon request. why is this a secret? my husband ate half…

It came rare, as I requested. there were only about 5 mushrooms which was a bummer for the fungi lover that I am. the Marsala was over reduced but passable.

The service was attentive- always good for a large group.

One last thing I wanted to note was the salad bar. I found it so incredibly strange that it was lit up by green light bulbs… such a dark and creepy way to display food. This is one old school item that needs to change ASAP.

  5. Every time I'm in Jersey now, I have to stop by this place. The steaks are always solid, good quality and portions are way generous. The staff is super nice and it's always packed with people. Their selection of beer and wine is good, they their Portuguese beer (I believe they have 2 options). This time I tried the steak cook on the tile and I liked it a lot – they bring it to your table sizzling in garlic and salt and it finishes cooking right there. Also, don't forget to grab a few items from their complementary buffet in the back and don't pass the desert because they're great.

All in all, Fernandes is a great Portuguese restaurant with moderate prices with large portions – a must try if you're in the area.

  6. I went to Fernandes to celebrate a friend's birthday around 9 on a Saturday night.  Because of our large party, they could only take us at 9, which worked in our favor because by the time we were seated (9:30), Rodizio is discounted at $25, so we all accepted the meat challenge.

I've been to a handful of Rodizio places, from hole in the wall places in South River to high end places like Texas de Brazil.  I have to say that we all had a good time at Fernandes, since Rodizio is both a meal and an experience in itself.

We started with the salad bar, which by the end of the night was in need of replenishment.  They gave sides of rice, beans and fried bananas and potatoes for the table.  There were 18 different meats brought to the table.  My favorite was the top sirloin, and others liked the skirt steak.

This is a tremendous amount of food and we were all incredibly full for the next 24 hours or so.  The service was great, except for a waiter that spilled water on my friend (and there was no apology or discount from the manager, to our surprise) but they were otherwise very attentive.  I would definitely consider going back to Fernandes for an upcoming special occasion!

  7. I made a reservation here for a birthday dinner. I had been to the Newark location before and thought I would see if this location was as great as the other.

Due to the size of our party (12) we were only offered either a 4:00 or a 9:00 reservation so we opted for the 9:00. We all arrived promptly and waited at the bar for our table to be ready where we all got glasses of their delicious sangria. We weren't actually seated until 9:30 which was frustrating to me because I thought the reservation was quite late to begin with but worked out in our favor since the rodizio prices drop to $25 after 9:30. Let the feast begin…

The meats were really all delicious. It's hard to even pick favorites because everyone at the table seemed to enjoy it all. Only a few cons to dinner – the bacon that came around the pork was chewy and undercooked. The mozzarella cubes were like salty little rocks, and this is from someone who loves cheese and salt. The shrimp was overcooked but certainly still flavored well.

This was overall a fair experience. Everyone enjoyed the food and had a great time at dinner but my 3 stars come from feeling a little rushed through the courses due to our late seating and the lack of formal apology or discount from the manager after a tray of water glasses were spilled on me. I truly don't mind a little spillage – it happens, everyone has a bad day but I would have expected at least a free drink or dessert from management. I probably won't be back to this location.
