I've gotten coffee & lattes from here, but I came back for the chocolate truffles. One of the best days of my life was when I was able to try a half dozen different truffles and practically die from the deliciousness. There were some I would never thought I'd enjoy, but we took some recommendations and loved them. Take a gander to your right when you walk in the door and see what masterpieces they're creating! So impressive. I was also surprised that they serve alcohol here, which was pretty cool. Unexpected but pleasant!
A stone's throw away from the Hudson and the boorish Holland Tunnel, lies FIKA, a Swedish gem. Though the word "fika" is the Swedish term for a coffee break, I've never actually had a cup of coffee here…because I'm not a coffee drinker.
I have nothing bad to say about FIKA, except they are really behind their online ordering system. I've been here severals times for pickup and there were days where they didn't have my order ready.
Their food, however, is absolutely delicious and makes this place worth the trek–I've had the Torsby and Lysekil Sandwiches and both are phenomenal. The Torsby (though the heavy mayo can call for a creamy mess) is pretty much a chicken salad and has a bit of everything, but their rye bread is heavenly! The Lysekil (tuna sandwich) is also really yummy–I highly recommend both and can't wait to try their other sandwiches! Since I've gotten their half sandwich, half soup deal (a great option for lunch), I've had their Cream of Mushroom Soup, which was fantastic–crumbled pieces of mushrooms in a light, tasty broth that doesn't feel like it came out of a can.
I'm sure the other FIKA locations don't disappoint, but this particular one is shied away from the bustling streets of heavy traffic and it is never crowded at all–you can eat peacefully in their outdoor seats in the summer. This location is supposedly their hallmark location for their chocolate, which explains why they have so, so many drool-worthy truffles.
Got a skim cappuccino which was strong and delicious.
Also tried a number of their chocolates – salted caramel, hazelnut, dark chocolate, etc. They were all so rich and incredible. They melt in your mouth.
The reason I give 4 stars is because the line was disorganized and a bit chaotic. Also, the area where you add your coffee toppings was tiny and very dirty. People left garbage there because there was no place nearby to dispose of it. The counter itself had sugar and coffee spilled all over it as well.
The chocolate is made right next door to this little corner coffee shop so you can watch the process through a glass wall by the counter. I encountered some chocolate skulls that looked oh so good. My favorite is the Swedish inspired lingonberry flavors and the flavors filled with a little alcoholic touch such as baileys Irish cream and passion fruit. The goat cheese is also delicious.
This Swedish establishment (Fika means enjoying a cup of coffee) sweetens this part of TriBeCa with its chocolatier. But that's about all it offers. The coffee is ok but a tad on the weak side. I'm unfortunately an American girl who prefers strong coffee except when it comes to espresso which I have not found in good quality stateside yet (it's brewed too strongly here).
I do enjoy the vast selection of chocolates. Some of them are award winning although that really means nothing to me except they'd better taste good. And they oh so do. I finally tried something savory here though and I was a bit disappointed. My appetite allows me to eat things that are just a ok so yes the meatball sandwich was just a ok. I meatballs with a slaw of sorts (beets?) and greens on a multigrain roll. Very bland but swedes don't like spicy now do they?
The matcha latte is very mild and pleasant just like the coffee. If you venture to this part of the island just get a box of chocolates, observe said chocolate making, and peace out. That's usually my game plan for FIKA.
