On a rainy Friday afternoon, everyone seems a bit low-spirited. So I decided to go to Financier for some pastries to share with coworkers and cheer fellows up.
Guess what, they've got this exotic, beautiful and delicious petit bites package (all fancy desserts/pastries). Perfect!
I got the box and before even going back to the office building, already receiving compliments. Financier's packaging is just soooooo classy, u know ^.~
Tiramisu, fraisier, berry tartlette, cheesecake dome, sacher torte, chocolate mousse… god you name it. I personally love Eclair a lot.
Anyways I will go back there for sure.
Financier, in my opinion, is the best chain bakery in town. Their stuff is top-notched. The only reason I'm not giving it a five star is because this particular store is so tiny, and service could obviously be improved, aka, they are not super friendly or try to make you feel welcome.
I go here for decent coffee. And since I've tried the patisserie I also return for that 😉
Having moved from Europe to US I often miss a decent espresso. Here I can prevent to go cold turkey. The coffee is really good be it espresso, double espresso or cappuccino. The staff is nice, you can sit at a high table and look out though the windows on the streets or have a seat a the bistro like tables. Or simply take it out.
I tried the strawberry-passionfruit cake/mousse and a chocolate mouse covered in chocolate (yes, I admit, I am part-time chocoholic). Both were delicious!
Somewhere around park avenue is another branch but I only go here. I is so calm and cosy.
Oh, only one downside: you order at the register even if you sit down. That is not really French. But they bring you your order at the table and you do not have to wait for it at the register.
With the possible exception of chicken wings, I take the Texan approach to food. Given a choice, I'll always pick the bigger cookie from the batch. So you can imagine my delight when I came face to face with the behemoth macarons ($2.25 each) at Financier Patisserie. These babies are massive for macarons. As big as a popeye's biscuit. Actually, possibly bigger. In the heat of the moment, it was nearly impossible to make a decision. Things got a little fuzzy, but I walked out with a Coconut Passion Fruit macaron clutched in my excited little hand.
It was good, but not great. Let me explain. I think there's a must be some sort of science to baking macarons that prevents them from staying as delicious when they exceed a certain size. Then middle 2 inches of the macaron was perfectly light and awesomely creamy, but the outside was just too dense and chewy. The flavor was good, but the passion fruit overwhelmed the coconut flavor. I liked it, but I'm not sure I would get it again. Do you know what I mean?
I returned to sample the pistachio, which had great flavor, but the outside of the macaron suffered from the same denseness when the inside was perfect.
As an aside, I should add that the cafe is very clean and appealing. The service was enthusiastic and flawless.
LOOOOOOOOOVE this place.
Their hot chocolate is made SO authentically, with hot milk and dark chocolate chips. I always ask them to add a pump of white chocolate to sweeten it up a bit. The chocolate croissants here are orgasmic, as well as most of their other pastries. The Opera cake, the chocolate flourless cookie, everything. Amazing.
The desserts here are memorable and decently priced.
This place is 2 blocks away from my apt, and is my go to dessert shop when I'm craving a pastry or 4. Maybe that's why it's so hard for me to loose weight?
They dish out some of the freshest desserts. You can get your chocolate, strawberry, caramel fix here. Most of their desserts are displayed in a glass show case. I don't think there are labels on them, so if something catches your eye just ask someone behind the counter for help. There some goodies that are within your reach (ie. macarons, cookies).
The line can get a bit crazy and everyone behind the counter is a bit frantic. This is why they get a 1 star deduction. A long line is to be expected at any good place but I really wish they were more organized here. With some patience, eventually you will be helped and on your way to some great desserts.
Their desserts will satisfy your sweet tooth.
Delicious baked goods. And each coffee comes with a little treat. This is definitely a better place to stop to get your morning cup of joe rather than Starbucks!
Baked treats were what we stopped in to get – no sandwiches or other savory food for us. Four slices or small mini-cakes for us to give to a friend, who loved them. The chocolate mousse slice was a tasty reminder of how sweet something can really be… and it was very sweet. Sadly not the same as the mousse cake further up on 1st Ave that was powdered with delicious dark chocolate but this will do in a pinch.
I went to Financier for an ice coffee at around 7am. No complaints with the ice coffee and to my delight, it came with a little sweet treat. Constant stream of people in and out, including a few regulars. No outlets in the front. Co-ed bathroom which was clean. While the staff weren't particularly friendly, I did see that one woman forgot her change and they went after her to give it to her so they are well meaning. The spacing is tight in between where you order as the milk/sugar/trash stand is right behind.
