Fine Fare Supermarket

“Sometimes the cashiers are nasty or have an attitude, but they are NOT SLOW ringing you up, unlike their neighbors on grand street.”

“Since pathmark closed down, this has been the closest American supermarket around, during their sales, you can get items at a pretty good price.”

“Staff always friendly to me maybe because I act like they are my friends and neighbors (which they probably are!)”

  1. Ditto what other reviewers have said: expired (overpriced) goods, uninterested cashiers, terrible layout. I will avoid at any costs and try to take my business elsewhere.

  2. Decent market and good sales sometimes. The cleanliness of this market seems to be lacking but still the projects is right next door!

  3. I went there three days ago and I had a $1 coupon.  The cashier ADDED the $1 to my charges instead of *subtracting* it (which I really think elevates her level of incompetence to new heights) – so when I looked at the receipt after paying and then insisted on talking to the manager (a different manager than the sleazebag from March), he gave me back the $1 overcharge.  However, he *refused* to refund the $1 for the coupon AND he refused to give me back the coupon!  This place is again becoming Scumbag City and I'm downgrading back to just two stars.

  4. This is the closest supermarket to me and on days I can't make it to TJs or Whole Foods or I am too tired, this place saves me from having a completely empty fridge.

This neighborhood is changing fast. Yes, there are still low income housing monstrosities here mixed in with a pocket of Orthodox Jews along with the usual Chinese immigrants and a sizeable Latino population. On any given day, you'll hear English, some Fujianese, Chinese and Spanish. I really do love the diversity in this neighborhood. And yes, don't forget about the hipsters, they are hidden but can be found.

This supermarket will surprise you, so along with the usual terrible GMO foods here, you'll also find things for the inner hipster in you. This includes:

-bottles and bottles of Grady's cold brew iced coffee
-the whole line of Turmeric Elixir of Life pressed juices
    -Ocean's Halo Seaweed chips
    -Dominican style cassava bread
    -Bob's Red Mill grains
    -Mother-in-Law Kimchi
-a whole refrigerated display of organic milk, cheese and eggs
    -Tofutti non-dairy cheeses
    -Made in Brooklyn pita chips
    -Baked lentil chips
-an extensive collection of craft brews (you'll find every beer you are looking for)
    -Meyer's line of cleaning products

Now granted the place is nothing to look at, but sometimes, desperate times call for desperate measures.

  5. Pathmark has shut down and if I need my fix of American snacks, Fine Fare is the closest one to me. What this place lacks is cleanliness, every time I come in here it smells like someone peed on the floor everywhere. The fruits here are always moldy and they still sell at a high price (for fresh and cheap fruits I'd go near the bridge on East Broadway). They do have a wide variety of different ethnic foods, I like to come here for their tortilla when my hubby is around so he can make me some burritos.
The cashiers and those that bag your groceries are friendly, the only reason why they deserve a 2 stars.
Despite giving them two stars, I will trek my way here if needed to.. Unless another American grocery store place opens nearby.

  6. I had the great misfortune of having to shop at this 'ghetto' supermarket during one of the recent blizzards. Nothing had improved:

    1) The fruits were way overpriced and for that you get moldy raspberries (I couldn't believe it) and blue berries!

    2) The staff continue to be rude and unhelpful.  I asked an older male employee where the aspirin was located. He brusquely waved me away, and wouldn't even turn around, as he said 'Over there.'

    3) The deli section had old-looking (and super expensive) offerings.

    4) Aspirin and cold medications are kept hidden in a little nook behind the cashier furthest away from the door.  If you want something, you have to ask your cashier to go over to the very annoyed and rude woman who guards the nook and brings out the item (BTW $7.15 for a small box of Bayer!!).

    5) The customers are often a piece of work: pushy and rude old ladies and old men who refuse to move their wagons or who run them right into you!

Only desperation led me to return to this awful place!

Trade Joe's is needed here! ASAP
