Five Star Bar & Grill
“Too bad they don't deliver all the way out to where I live, however they do have buffets everyday for lunch (except Sunday) for like $8 or $9 where you can actually get a to go box and take out.”
“I really have never tasted more authentic and delicious indian food in the city (short of going into the depths of Jackson heights), and I have lived here for 13 years.”
“Clearly, you gotta be in the know!”

Location: So my friend tells me this place is in Long Island City, which could also, I think, be referred to as Astoria.
The place: First, I'm not really sure why they refer to it as a bar & grill because it's an Indian restaurant. Anyway, it's fairly spacious, though very dimly lit. The decor is nice, a bit dark for my taste (the walls are maroon) but clean and really, who cares about decor if the food is good?
The goods: My date took care of the ordering and we had Chicken Tikka Misala, a lentil dish, naan (the kind made with potato) and a mango lassi. Everything was awesome. Seriously, the dishes were flavorful and the bread was great. They give you complimentary papadum and veggies as well.
Service: Good. We got our dishes super fast!
Price point: I didn't pay but I think it came out to about $35.
This is a great little place – don't let the location or decor fool you! The only thing that concerned me is this: I went downstairs to use the washroom and there was a large container of what was obviously meat, being marinated, on the floor. It was covered in Saran wrap but I really don't think it's sanitary or hygienic to leave food siting around on the floor of a basement! This is why I docked one star.
The food is very good here (saag paneer, tandoori chicken, and a lassi), but the place needs a lot of fresh paint and kept much cleaner. you can see right into the event room and you see ladders laying around, and just a general disarray of crap everywhere. I know this place is not the Taj Mahaal, and I'm not expecting it to be immaculate, but there were certain areas of the restaurant where the lighting was a little dim and uninviting. The lighting needs to be better to really see what needs to be done to spruce things up. I think that could start to help this diner get into a better groove.
Five Star Diner gets 5 stars from me.
I ordered food from here through Seamless and had no problems with delivery. The food was delivered fast and hot.
I got the butter chicken ($12) and garlic naan (3). First of all, their prices are ridiculously cheap. Second of all, this is some of the best Indian food I've ever have and I've been to tons Indian restaurants in my lifetime (even had my Sweet 16 at one many years ago!) I'm pretty picky when it comes to butter chicken. I'm usually disappointed by bland, watery sauce. Not so at 5 Star. Their butter chicken sauce is extremely creamy and flavorful. Every bite I took I tasted a different spice. It was heavenly. They also did not skimp on the garlic at all with the garlic naan. This was the most ever garlicky naan ever. Tons of pieces of fresh garlic. When I dipped it in the butter chicken sauce it was so extremely good. The meal also came with a free container of delicious rice.
If I had to choose my last meal on earth- I think this would be it.
Walked in around 10:15 pm at night on Sunday to use up my groupon. One big table in the back and no server/wait staff in sight. Helped myself to a menu and waited for a couple minutes before someone came out from the kitchen to take my order. It's fine but a bit awkward to stand around not knowing if the restaurant is still open and like a lot of people have mentioned, it's in an industrial zone and parking was not easy to find.
Placed my order of chicken tikka masala $10.95, chicken vindaloo $11.95 and nan $2 at 10:20pm, the guy said 20 min which seems very reasonable. There was one TV on and I sat down in the bar and played game/surfed the web on my phone. 20 minutes had passed, more people had came in and it was actually getting crowded. No food, and no comments from the guy. I made eye contact with him and he said, it'll be out in a few minutes….. it was not so. I didn't leave with my food until 10:55. 🙁
I had the food the next day at work and it was delicious!! The nan was quite big and delicious after I heated it up in a toaster oven. crunch on the edges and soft and doughy in the center. The Chicken tikka masala had a slight kick to it and a very generous portion of chicken breast. It was really quite good. I have not tried the chicken vindaloo but I expect it to be delicious too.
The food is really good and the next time I come, I will definitely call ahead and not wait in the restaurant. But this Indian food is really good!
I strolled in here on a Friday afternoon and I'm glad I did. One bit of advise do not sit in the second set of single booth seats, the AC leaks. During the noon to 4pm hour they offer a $10 all you can eat buffet. The selection is reasonable for the cost. I only have one issue with the food. When I was putting peppers on my plate I noticed that they forgot to take the sticker off and cooked the peppers with the sticker. I politely took the sticker off and put the pepper to the side. The food was so tasty and delicious and wasn't as spicy as I thought it was going to be. It was a very hot day and I was glad that our pitcher of water kept on getting refilled every-time that we were finished. I was a little surprised that this place was not packed. You might get a little confused when you come here because there is a big hall next to this place which gives the illusion that your walking in the wrong way. Make sure you go to the diner part or else your walking into a hall. The small little diner looks like it can hold 40 to 60 people. The buffet section wasn't that big it was placed on two long tables in the shape of an L. If you do not ask for anything to drink they automatically put water on your table and no offer of beverage is brought upon you. I didn't get to check out the bathroom when I go back I will. One might be scared of the decor but it felt like a whole different atmosphere as if we were in India with an american style looking restaurant, its really hard to explain. The art on the walls were rather interesting, I wanted to take a closer look but was in a bit of a rush because of the prior plans after eating. My reason for the 3 stars is because I did not get to see the bathroom, the leaky ac and the sticker on my green pepper. Other then that there is no complaints.
Extremely inexpensive Indian food, and it was quite delicious, too. I ordered SO much, for SO little. I had saag paneer, vegetable samosas, and na'an . . . all for $12. It was a little spicier than I can normally handle, but it was so delicious, so I didn't really mind. Will definitely order from here again.
I had heard great things and part of it didn't disappoint. But it wasn't amazing , the service was retarded, and it's pretty much in bumblefuck so I'm gonna go with 3 stars. The samosa was wonderful, the fresh mango lassi was also fabulous. We also had the Saag Paneer, Butter Chicken, and Lamb Curry. The saag was solid, it got cold sorta fast but the cheese was fresh and I enjoyed addition of jalapenos. The butter chicken was also solid, the tandoor on the chicken was nice, but compared to my all time favorite version of this dish(props out to Little Deli, yes i spelled it correctly, in San Francisco) it was just ok. The lamb was the spiciest of the dishes and the meat was generally pretty tender, but again it wasn't memorable. I'd go back if I'm in LIC craving Indian, but I still prefer the tandoori Lamb Chops at Jackson Diner and I also wanna hit up Roti Boti.
