Nice little place. We came here after taking the Ferry to Staten Island from NY. We were aware there was a brewery in the area, but it's well hidden. You can't see it from the main road, but we found it eventually.
It is your typical brewery/beer hall, with a large warehouse style main room and benches. The decor is cool, with the taxidermy behind the bar and there are games you can play at the tables. Friendly staff. Good beer. I would venture here again if I return to Staten Island.
10 min walk from the SI ferry. On a hot day it's the best place to be too quench your thirst.
Beer is $5. I had the Flagship Summer Ale, and it was very good.
Relatively new brewing company est 2013.
Something great to do while visiting the island!
FYI you can bring your own food in!
My beer club went to Staten Island for the first time ever to visit Flagship Brewing and it was worth the trip. First of all, it's not much of a trip. The brewery is not even a 10 minute walk from the ferry and on the way back, we caught a bus which got us there in three minutes. (The train is also right outside the brewery but it doesn't run very often)
Anyway, back to the brewery. It was a calm Thursday night and the team on hand was very welcoming and informative about their beers and the brewery. Even though 11 of us walked in all at once, we got our beers quickly. They showed us how to use the ipad on the wall to order pizza and we were all set!
I got a flight to sample four of the beers and they were all pretty decent. I wasn't crazy about their lager, but the others were pretty good and the Roggenfest was absolutely delicious. That was my "go to" beer after I finished my flight.
If you haven't been here, you need to do yourself a favor and go. If you take the ferry, you'll get a gorgeous 25 minute ride and then you can walk to the brewery in about 10 minutes. It's easy to get to, the beer is good and the people who own the place and work there are awesome and very welcoming. So put down your phone and stop reading this review and head over to Flagship already!
Who knew Staten Island had it's own brewery? The brewery itself is a decently sized and the offer flights of 4 beer tasting for around $8 [or one ticket]. They also offer ample seating, parking space, and games! Because being drunk makes board games a lot more fun. The brewmasters were also very generous and gave a well informative tour of the brewery [full disclosure, it was a bit boring but a lot more fun drunk ;)]. My only qualm is they do not offer any food options but they do have take out menus from nearby spots and two vending machines [FYI Snickers and beer, not a good mix]. If you like small independent breweries, its worth the trip as it is right by the ferry after a 15 – 20 minute walk or take the S51 and get off by the park [around 3 or 4 stops] and walk for like 5 minutes. And, also pick some of their swag, yes, they are a bit overpriced but you made the trip to the Forgotten Borough, you need to get a memento other than a hangover.
Been here twice. First time was for a private event, sad to say they didn't have anything ready at all. We had to get everything ready meaning putting the tables and chairs out along with the candy table. The beers on the other hand weren't bad at all. Pretty tasty. Second time I can was when a band was playing, ordered a flight it was great. Only bad thing Is they don't serve food. They do have a vending machine for like chips and you can ordered from pier to have it delivered there.
Full Disclosure –
I am a hardcore beer fan.
Second Full Disclosure –
I like to taste my beers.
Third Full Disclosure –
These beers are too much (harsh) taste for my blood.
The brewery is on the smaller side but it is practically spanking new. This place is so new that during the tour, the master brewer noted that their expensive bottling machine hasn't even been used yet.
Here's to hoping that they brew something that I actually might like to drink…
The beers here are HEAVY IPA, quite bitter, and harsh all the way through. There may have been 1 beer that is the exception but I don't recall the name as it wasn't that memorable.
But if you are an IPA fan, this just might be the place for you to spend your afternoon.
The trek out here to Staten Island alone makes me reconsider a second trip but I wouldn't rule it out.
They also ran out of the beer flight option with the nice glasses and carry case. But they did rectify this by providing the beer samples in plastic clear beer pong like cups.
It was okay.
Woohoo craft beer on Staten Island! Flagship is practically next to the St. George Ferry if you are familiar with the area at all. Lucky for us parking did not prove to be a challenge. We bought some tokens at the door, made our way to the bar, and began sampling away!
Among the different beers tried were Roggenfest, APA, American Wit, Dry-hopped Wit, and Dark American Mild. I gotta say, I was very impressed. We even chatted with the owners for a bit who are husband and wife. This guy definitely knows what he's doing as he has been brewing for years working, with various craft breweries.
The space in this place is huge. Kinda reminds me of Brooklyn Brewery. There was also an area set up where bands can play. No food served but like a lot of other breweries nowadays, you can BYOF.
So next weekend when you can't figure out what to do, put down your Miller Lite and take a ride to Flagship Brewing. After all, it was Ben Franklin who said "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
Ventured over to SI on the ferry,.. just because I had never done it before. Thanks to a tip from my friend who lives on SI we headed over to find this hidden gem. Located in a warehouse close to the ferry you'll find this cool little brewery. Tons of picnic tables to sit at, sports on the projection TV, board games to play.. Really neat. There were about 6 beers to choose from the day I was there, tried the lager and the ipa. Both were pretty good. The setup reminds me very much of the Brooklyn Brewery, wooden tokens and all. I think this is a great addition for SI, there doesn't seem too be very much going on in this area other than the SI Yankees and the ferry.
