Fleishers Craft Butchery
“Fantastic place my favorite new school butcher in the city and tied with Paisanos for my favorite butcher in Brooklyn.”
“Their ground meat is also top notch, and allowed me to grill my personal best, burgerwise.”
“Overall though, the quality of the meats of beef, pork, lamb, poultry and sausage, are really worth the repeat visits.”

Limited selection, high-quality product at a steep price. Any bacon that costs $14 a pound should be sliced to order, not pre-sliced, which it is at Fleisher's. Brats and sausages are hit and miss, with the smokey and flavorful chorizo standing out as a notable hit. Aside from its convenience to Park Slope straphangers/stragglers, this place has little, if any, advantage over Paisano's in neighboring Carol Gardens.
Nonetheless, I'll be back for lazy Sunday Stew ingredients. Too close to home not to.
Sigh. I really wish I could give Fleisher's a better rating, but alas, it is what it is. The meat quality is very good – there is no quibble about that. However, I have virtually never walked in here and left with what I actually wanted to purchase, and I'm not looking to purchase anything unusual: today it was chicken breast with the skin on and ribs. Neither were there. Last time, it was any version of country ribs or pork shoulder. The previous time it was lamb chops. The time before that…and so on.
I plan my meals like most people do: In the morning, I find something I want to cook for that night or maybe the next day and I buy all of what I need that I don't already have at home. It is a total buzz kill to choose a recipe based on what we've received in that week's CSA or whatever is seasonal, only to have the main ingredient not be available. We also live more than half a mile from Fleisher's, and their hours frankly stink (11 am is usually when life with a toddler means you are on the way home, not just getting started), so I don't have a chance to call them before I arrive to ask if they have what I need. I have truly never NOT been disappointed, and I have always ended up buying something that I really didn't ultimately want for lack of better options.
Today, I probably spent triple what I would have spent had they actually had the ribs I wanted, and I'm really in a funk about it. Yes, I know this is a whole animal purveyor and thus, you get what's available. I support their mission, but it doesn't mean they have met my needs as a customer. I am tired of walking a mile and ending up either empty handed or empty pocketed.
What they SHOULD do is offer phone order and delivery. For those of us who try to give them our business but can't wait until after 11 to find out whether they'll have what we need and then still have to walk a mile to get there, let us call, and you deliver it at a specified drop off time for a nominal fee. If you don't have it? Well, then I haven't wasted the morning and I can go someplace else.
Barring that, we will not be returning to Fleisher's with any regularity, I'm sorry to say. I can still get thoughtfully raised and butchered meat in various locations in lower Manhattan or even at Fresh Direct, and at least I'll know what I need will be there. And I won't end up leaving with something I didn't want for a far dearer fee.
Organic butcher shop in Park slope fits well in the neighborhood. I understand that they offer high quality meat but the price is a bit more then I would spend on Meat.
I am sure that many would disagree and I am sure it's worth buying high quality meat but you can find good high quality meat elsewhere at a more reasonable price
I personally prefer Halal butcher shops, the meat is fresh and tender, I am sure that this butcher shop offers higher quality meat but I don't think it's worth the extra cost.
Four and a half stars. Fantastic place my favorite new school butcher in the city and tied with Paisanos for my favorite butcher in Brooklyn. Both are great in totally different ways. Ways lucky enough to have visited the original flagship location in Upstate Kingston NY and was thrilled to hear of the Brooklyn branch opening. I was not disappointed in the least.
This is the place to go when you want to ensure you are getting top quality meat, meticulously locally sourced, organic and the like, and get information on proper preparation and cooking techniques from a staff who is incredibly well informed and You would think a place like this, particularly one located in Park Slope, of all places would be obnoxious and pretentious and a rip off but that is in not the case. The staff seems to have a near PhD level knowledge of the art of butchery and offers great preparation advice. Taught me the finer points of searing. My girlfriend bought me the book the owners wrote and sell there and it has been extremely useful. The thing that really sets this place apart however is that they offer the highly unusual ingenious cuts of meat that you will never find at most any other butcher, along the lines of lamb shoulder blade steaks, and faux filet beef. These are the types of cuts that delight creative master chefs and would make Anthony Bourdain types geek out.
Prices of meat seems very fair considering the quality is simply incredible and evident at first sight and taste. The prepared rotisserie chicken is simply the best I have ever tasted (though also the most expensive I have ever bought). Also I did think the prices of some of the prepared items, such as a tiny 12 dollar chicken pot pie, were a bit much, although again it was incredibly delicious.
Beautiful small shop but offering all you might need from sausages to freshly made stock to roasted chicken to any cut you might like. Absolutely a Must for high quality organic meat, definitely a Gourmet meat shop on 5th Avenue. It's more than 4 stars but I am not used to give 5 stars after only one time 😉 I will be back to buy more cuts!
I generally try to avoid expletives on reviews here, but f**k this place. Seriously.
Sure, there is a distinct cool factor and novelty here, that they are certainly trying to sustain as much as possible. Their products are of high quality and desperately needed in the neighborhood, no doubt about it. However, their complete lack of common courtesy and commitment to service is deplorable. I don't know if it's coming from the owner(s), the management, or if it's just a construct of the holier-than-thou, hipsteriffic staff, but this place has some of the worst service I've experienced in a very long time.
I pre-ordered a relatively uncomplicated piece of meat for xmas dinner, a WEEK in advance. First they said they couldn't do it, then they could, then they were trying to dictate to me how big it was going to be. The following day, when I realized I had made a mistake, I called back to change the order slightly. They absolutely couldn't do it, I was told. When I offered that I would just cancel the order then, they miraculously could accommodate me, and I was assured it wouldn't be an issue.
Lo and behold, I arrived the day before xmas eve to pick it up and the order was not done. When I asked to see the details of the order, they were wrong. I was told 10 mins and they would handle it. It took at least 30. After walking back in to check for about the 5th time, I asked the dark-haired female attendant (who, incidentally, is a complete bitch) what the story with my order was. She asked who I was and what my order was…again. Much to my chagrin, the order had been completed nearly 10 mins earlier and was left on the counter by the butcher. Her response was basically, "Ohh, whoops."
Top to bottom, I had a horrible experience here and will definitely not be taking my business here again. I'd just as soon go back to my old neighborhood and patronize the likes of Florence Meat Market or Ottomanelli's before I set foot in this place, where one is made to feel as though they are being done a HUGE favor by being allowed to shop there.
So yeah, like I said, f**k this place!
Really helpful staff at this great butcher. Awesome products and when they are out of an item they will suggest a great substitution. I have learned to use new cuts of meats for cooking and this I really appreciate. I love all of their sausages. The best overly priced rotisserie chicken in NYC. Juicy and flavorful. Two issues with this place- one they don't have bacon? I always have to go somewhere else when stopping in here cause they don't have bacon. Second, the prices. Listen, I will pay for good food. Recently i bought pork belly here and it came to $40. It just felt like way to much, I appreciate sustainable/ grass fed/ grain finished blah blah but $40 for a not fancy slice of meat is a lot!
"Bork?"
"Yea"
"Do I need to ask what that is?"
"If you want."
"Don't tell me. I want a pound of bork."
Guess who was cooking some bork picadillo the next day? Jyyyeaaahhhhhh.
If you're a Park Slope carnivore or someone who cheats on veggies with bacon and you have a demanding set of gourmet ethics then a visit to Fleisher's is in order. The shop is pretty small and despite what you may think there isn't an entire steer and pig in a refrigerator and they don't carry every piece of beef imaginable but what they do have is excellent and if it's not in the store they can order it for you.
I'm not a fan of chicken most of the time because it tastes like chicken but their rotisserie chicken is like some kind of creature that was born with marinade and seasonings already in it. I couldn't stop picking at bone like an alley cat because it's so damn flavorful. Other odds and ends include frozen poultry, charcuterie, some cheeses and other seasoning bits.
My first purchase from Fleisher's was actually some very tasty-looking fresh dog treats which my friend's labrador didn't quite chew but rather inhaled like breathing in beefy air. If you're ever stricken with a case of stoned munchies you may very well eat the bag yourself so buyer beware. I'm not saying this happened I'm just saying it could happen. Seriously I didn't eat them. Maybe. Just one.
