  1. It's got everything you expect from a midtown takeout joint.

    Dirty ass interiors.
Indifferent staff that seem annoyed to deal with you.
Greasy ass food that will do wonders to your colon (and or anus)
    Cheap as hell

Maybe it's because I speak Chinese to them, but generally they don't treat me like dog shit, which is always welcome.  I've seen other customers get treated with far more disdain, but that's none of my business.  What I do know is this, they serve okay take out, but even for a mediocre joint of the same tier, their food is more subpar than the places I used to order from on the UWS or the East Side.

Much of it has to do with the fact I find their roast pork fried rice to be greasy but not very tasty (which is somewhat hard to do).  I don't do the Western thing where I drizzle soy sauce on my rice (and frankly you shouldn't have to) in order to make it palatable.  I can make the same exact dish at home with a lower flame (a big no no for fried rice) and less grease than what they dump here.  If you can't even do fried rice right, jeez!

The beef w/broccoli is just meh also.  It's not particularly flavorful and it's also greasy as shit.  Again, this isn't Tang Pavillion or Mr K's so I am not expected gourmet food.  But at the very least get the easy shit right!  If you're dying for takeout, I guess you have no reason to say no to this stuff given the low prices, but there are better joints elsewhere.

Also beware – if you are crazy enough to eat here, be prepared to smell like the underbelly of a greasy wok when you leave.  Just standing there waiting for my order made me feel like one giant nasty ball of grease.

  2. What I love about Chinese take-out is it's just so darn cheap (in contrast to all the other ethnic foods in NYC). But what I dislike about Chinese food is also that it's just so cheap! How do my people afford to feed their families and make a living when they sell their entrees, apps, etc for half the price of what other joints sell their foods and include double the portion-size? Aiyah….
When I think Chinese take-out (being a transplant New Yorker), I think SATC and to-go white take-out boxes delivered fresh to your home so that you can sit on your couch and gab. Of course, my life's not like that, but at least I can have the take-out every so often. 🙂

Onto the FOOD (yes, I capitalized that for those of you growing impatient with my review.)
Tofu with mixed veggies: Broccoli is perfectly soft and marinated in the brown sauce and it includes an assortment of veggies (snow peas, green bell peppers, cabbage, carrots, mushrooms). Really, you can't ask for more from a dish that's $4! I can't even imagine why anyone would need the large portion when they include SO MUCH in the "pint" size.
Beef lo mein: They were out of chow mein so I ordered this. What is the difference? I have no idea…
Basically, this is like the noodles you get from Panda Express (but thicker) or the garlic noodles you get from Gyu-kaku but of course being a "Chinese take-out" joint, it's DOUBLE the size and HALF the price.
Cheese won-tons: OMG, they serve 8 gigantic cheese won tons (the most enormous ones I've ever seen in my life) and they're pretty good. I like how the cheese is just the perfect amount of sweetness. However, they could've done better with the crispyness of the batter.

ah, thanks Fo Ying for working so hard to produce food which is fast, tasty, and quite the deal.

  3. What used to be known as "Fu Ying" is now "Fo Ying" one of the popular Chinese delivery spots along 8th avenue.  In fact, the "o" in the lit sign outside seems to be brighter (because its newer) than the rest of the letters.

There are a few tables for sit down chow downs but they primarily concentrate on their super fast delivery service.  The prices are cheap, the   food is solid and the variety is about the same as the other delivery places out there.  If one can tolerate their subpar phone manners and the Chinese craving is too much, then this place will do.

  4. Pretty decent Chinese takeout in Midtown West/ Fashion District/Theatre District/Area of Expensive Food. It's a small takeout joint: no bells, no whistles, but a decent heating system, and an apparent set of regulars.

Fo Ying has a decent lunch special: meat, fried or white rice, and an egg roll or soup for a price in the vicinity of five dollars. Portions are good: filling, but not that kind of filling where it hurts. There is even room to sit and eat your meal while people watching. I do believe, while eating here, my companion and I saw Justin Bieber.

    Fo' srs.

The food is quite good. Rather than the food just being assorted chicken chunks in a slightly sweet glaze, the food contains real vegetables. The Kung Pao chicken seemed like a mixed vegetable medley: carrots, peppers, water chestnuts and more in the sauce. The white rice is also very good… not too hard, not too soft.

    I'd say it's a safe bet.

  5. Fo Ying epitomizes the jenky-ass shack, Chinese take-out restaurant. The food is also inline with expectations from a typical takeout: cheap, fast, and not really Chinese at all.

Sesame chicken tends to be the best way to gage these places so I got that. Although the wonton soup that came with it had wonton skins thicker than skin on an athlete's foot, the sesame chicken actually had more chicken than breading and the breading was still crisp. The sauce wasn't too bad either. This place is cheap, fast, filling, and semi-decent; it's good to go.
