Forest Hills Coffee Shop

“There's nothing crazy about hash but Dino, the owner and chef, makes it perfectly crispy where it just tastes so good along with some eggs and toast.”

“We came to eat a late breakfast– both my friend and I got pancakes and bacon (she also got scrambled eggs and hash browns/home fries).”

“The Breakfast Specials menu consists of about 15 total options, mainly egg based with a stellar throwback (#8 I believe) of Chocolate Chip Pancakes, a stack of three will cost you under $7.00.”

  1. What every NYC neighborhood needs, other than a bakery and a bookie is a cozy coffee shop just a few blocks from home. As I sit in my favorite #7 booth, paying the minimal amount of attention to my conversation, my mind wanders to some of the times I spent in the Forest Hills Coffee Shop dating back many years. The stories shared with friends, almost a of Seinfeld-esque experience in Queens. Additionally the Forest Hills Coffee Shop served as a perfect location for me to have an informal business meeting, as I could tumble out of the covers of my bed, shave, dress and arrive fifteen minutes prior to the meeting, sometimes five minutes early.

The pictures that adorn the walls are actually posters of a Gyro and some poorly strung and unlit, Christmas tree wire. How awesome is that? The owners have been here for twenty five years and there is nothing suggesting they did nit take up the business yesterday. I say that in jest as I would love to see some old Forest Hills pictures, specifically of Metropolitan Ave before it became the congested mess it is today.

The Breakfast Specials menu consists of about 15 total options, mainly egg based with a stellar throwback (#8 I believe) of Chocolate Chip Pancakes, a stack of three will cost you under $7.00.

The service is swift and attentive, your coffee cup will never see a micro centimeter below three quarters full, the Warm Ups are always timely.

Corned Beef has a tendency to come out over done, perhaps confused with my ":well done" Home Fries request. Eggs are always prepared to perfection but the side of bread is low quality. If they stepped that minor detail of the bread up, I feel it would be quite beneficial, as it is difficult to sop up yolk with cardboard.

  2. Very friendly server, food was great. It is that type of diner you feel welcomed and relaxed.

  3. Early Saturday Morning and as the hunger strikes, what better way to calm those hunger pangs but a quaint little coffee shop. The place is quite small with only a few tables and booths, but there is no need for anything more than just that. It reminds me of a 50's malt shop, where everyone is friendly and neighborly. The place lacked alittle tender loving care and the walls are bare, could use a new paint job (just a suggestion)
The Menu was a one page traditional american fair log cabin-esq hunters menu. All items were priced under $10 which now fits why certain interior areas did not get undated. Clearly the idea was to keep that 50s malt shop flair.

I had Three eight inch griddled cakes, with ample portions of bacon. The pancakes were fluffy, moist airy and light but everything i needed to put with it was lacking. the butter was hard as it was in the fridge too long and should have been set out to spread across my pancake, which damn well tore my pancake in half. The syrup was from a squeeze jar, Syrup should be poured and some additional flavored choices would have been nice…All in all i really enjoyed the morning there, just do something about the butter and syrup…

  4. Really??? A 4.5-star aggregate review for this place? OK. I won't ruin it's average, but it's definitely closer to one star.
I spotted this place sitting at the traffic light. I drive by EVERY DAY, and never noticed it. I love diners, and it looked like a nice old time coffee shop. We went in, and it really looks like a place ready to go under. years past it's heyday.
First off, it's the middle of July. Scrape the Christmas paintings off the mirror, and get rid of the Christmas lights. Then turn ON the rest of the lights in the back of the store, and fix the neon tube lighting. Get rid of all the mail and bills and junk in the first booth too. It all gives the place a seedy, neglected look. The bathrooms are disgusting, ther're dirty, stink, and need remodeling(the 1970s were 40 years ago). Other than that, it's a really cute place, and aside from the BRs, it appeared clean.
My scrambled eggs were sulfery and flat, I couldn't eat them. Fries were great, veggie burger was top quality and huge. bacon, just right, coffee good. It appears to be a two person operation. Owner and waitress.
This place should be a goldmine. but it's got that smell of death on it. An old business in decline.

  5. Dino's special is the only reason why I go there.  The coffee is mediocre, pancakes are perfect, and nostalgia is priceless, but the service is hit or miss depending on whether or not Dino's wife is there.  The loud banter takes away from the experience.

Keep up the good word Dino and staff!!

  6. Perfect little spot in queens great breakfast special under $10 looks like this place been here for many years and may need some facelift.  Great costumer service feels very welcoming

  7. This place is a hidden gem in the Forest Hills area. It's a little bit of a walk from the Subway but if it is a nice day – get off your can and start walking! The Waitress (blonde older lady) didn't really know what was going on and seemed to be arguing with Dino – the master chef who makes this delicious food. I'm not sure if that is just part of the atmosphere but it kind of felt like a TV show, borderline comical how much this lady was screwing things up. Dino however, took great care of me. I believe he is the owner. I had two slices of french toast, bacon, two eggs, home fries and a cup of coffee for $9.50. They make your food quickly and the coffee is delicious.  I haven't been hereon a weekend but I came in Monday morning around 10AM and it was still decently busy, but the prices are amazing and the quality of the food is absolutely amazing.  I will be back – just watch out for the nice but confused blonde waitress.

  8. I have lived in Forest Hills for almost six months now, and just encountered this incredible place. We came to eat a late breakfast– both my friend and I got pancakes and bacon (she also got scrambled eggs and hash browns/home fries). Everything was delicious. I have never understood the people who side with pancakes on the waffles vs pancakes debate but these pancakes are absolutely worth fighting/arguing for. Our waitress was attentive and we both finished our plates. Will definitely come back.
