Fornino- Greenpoint
“Goof ball loved this so much he finished the whole pie and declared Fornino is better than Paulie Gee's. What an abomination, I say.”
“Their 4 Stagione pie (topped with Prosciutto, Kalamata Olive, Shitake Mushroom, and Eggplant) is great,!”
“We had a Trevisana pie (tomato, mozzarella, pancetta, radicchio, goat cheese, cherry tomato) and a regular margherita and both were excellent.”

I've eaten here a couple times now. The first time 3 years ago, and I found it really salty. With some time that's now passed, I decided to re-visit and give it another shot, and I'm still unimpressed. Now I feel like it's a mix of salty and bland. It's possible.
I think the saltiness is from the sauce or over seasoning. And the dough is boring and tasteless. In total, I've had 4 pizzas from this place, and unfortunately they all remind me of why I use to not like pizza. And there are plenty of other pizza options nearby… Will probably never be back to Fornino.
Only redeeming factors are that the service is sweet and the back patio is cute. Just wish they had better pizza!
Food is AWESOME. Really. It's a great menu and the pizzas are extraordinary. Alas, the service at this place has sucked on multiple occasions. Literal eye rolls have been experienced. We used to go a lot, but because of this we now go less.
Lovely thin crust pizza, really good / simple design that makes you want to tarry for a while (and the waiters don't get pushy about turning your table over).
We came in the 5:30pm area on a saturday and it was not very busy at all, which our waiter attributed to a lull between the older afternoon crowd and younger dinner crowd. When we were leaving (a hour and a half later) a large party/group was settling in.
Tip – ask for the spicy honey and they bring the entire bottle to your table! It definitely kicked our pizza up a notch. Each pie is 11", which is more than enough for one person.
This was the first location of a pizza crawl I had participated in over the summer. It's actually probably like the 4th annual pizza crawl this guy does every year with a bunch of my friends. We initially had not picked Fornino as our starting location but instead were set to go to Paulie Gee's. Little did we know (I should have been on top of this and Yelped it) but they didn't open till 4pm so we decided to walk on over to this place. No regrets. Actually, this was my favorite of the three spots they choose on the crawl this year.
For pizzas we split the Bianca: Mozzarella, Ricotta, Wild Arugula, Red Onion, Olive Oil, and Parmigiano. This was my favorite of the two because it just melted apart in your mouth, the crust was at the perfect consistency, not too much salad on top to distract from the pillows of delicate ricotta cheese. It was SUPER CHEESY and I was happy about that. Some guys like to skimp on the cheese and this was perfection. The second pizza we had was the Margherita Doc: Tomato, Buffalo Mozzarella, Basil, Olive Oil, and Parmigiano. While this was much more simple it again was great wood oven style pizza. My only complaints, is that eating with non pork eaters most of the slices we had were just cheesy and still over $20 pizza pies. A bit on the pricy side as are their cocktails and beer. But it was again my favorite of our pizza crawl this day. Also, they have a nice outdoor area with picnic tables.
I did have another small complaint though actually, I had asked for a Moretti beer when we were first settling down. The waitress heard me but forgot to bring my drink and remembered everyone else's. I didn't speak up and say anything after the fact because there was a large crowd and figured I was saving myself $5 but it was a slight annoying quirk to the dining experience.
After trying to get a table at Paulie Gee's and not wanting to wait two hours, we headed down to Fornino late on a Friday night. There was a large group waiting in the front part of the restaurant, so it seemed really crowded, but they had an open table inside that they were able to seat up at right away. We each ordered a beer and then poured over the large selection of pies.
We started with a wild arugula and pear salad. The salad came out pretty quickly, and all of the ingredients were fresh and complemented each other nicely. For our pizza, we choose the Stagione, which comes with tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, Kalmata olives, mushrooms, and eggplant. I really, really liked this pizza. There was a very generous portion of prosciutto on top that was unsliced, so each and every single bite had a ton of prosciutto on it!
We recently tried Paulie Gee's, and they both have great pizza, but I'd take getting to sit down right away over a super hyped about spot. Also, Fornino's pizza was larger and way more filling than Paulie Gee's, which makes it more affordable and a winner in my book!
Walked into this pizza place as a 2nd option because Paullie Gee was packed and the wait was over 90 minutes. When i arrived here with a group of 5ppl, they sat us down right away. Tables are small even for 5ppl, food and server was very polite but some what forgetful in regards to items and menu specials. Had to ask him twice about what the specials of the day were and he kept forgetting the ingredients and or getting them mixed up. Salads for the table came out very fast, definitely a plus because we were hungry. The watermelon, ricotta and red onion salad was a hit. We ordered a second salad which had radichio, apples and balsamic dressing. This salad had too much balsamic dressing, dressing made the salad soggy and dressing was salty. I also ordered a hot appetizerFor 5 ppl we order 2 large pies, which at first seemed like it would leave us room to order something else but that was not the case. First pizza to arrive was the fig, gorgonzala and prosciutto. Crispy thin crust, nice amount of cheese, the balance of salty and sweet was good but i would have liked to see more figs to balance out the salty of the other components overall delicious. 2nd pizza to arrive was the mushroom pizza (funghi misti) I will start by saying it could have used less truffle oil but again a very delectable slice, thin and crispy and just in general a hit at the table. I did order a glass of rose but the wine tasted so water down and at $10 a glass, i just had beer after my wine.
Fan of this place but can't say it's the best brick oven pizza out there in New York. The pizza is thin and has a crunch to it. Not as chewy as I like. I recommend the Margherita pie. Simple and effective. I do not recommend their mushroom prosciutto pie…the sauce was a tad off and has a bitter like taste. Good pizza replacement when Paulie Gee has over an hour wait. No wait here and staff is nice.
Nothing Special– I've had amazing Pizza and I can't really count Fornino in my top 10 List of Pizza places to go to. I have come a couple of times due to the fact that my boyfriend loves the Funghi Misti and no other reason.
I have tried the other pizzas too but honestly there was nothing special– Nothing stands out in the pizza– It's very plain, lack of taste or it's way to salty and unable to be eaten.
In my opinion you can try many different pizza places and ones that you may actually ENjoy!!
