Forno Rosso Pizzeria

“They don't have the liquor license yet but there is a liquor store 2 minutes walk from there with an excellent wine selection so just bring your own wine, no big deal at all, you save money.”

“The interior design is perfectly executed (good color coordination with the red brick oven, stone, steel, glass, Italian posters, firewood).”

“They're there when you need them but don't linger or hover (in case you're secretly gushing over Chef Giuseppe).”

  1. It was the middle of the afternoon on Fourth of July, and I was just getting after a long morning of sleeping off the night before. I stumbled around Downtown Brooklyn, first in search of a Latin restaurant, then a diner and then a sushi place. They were all closed, either with reduced hours or a day off in honor of the holiday.

Forno Rosso takes no such breaks. They were open, with pleasing high ceilings and a slightly industrial feel. I went to the bar, had a couple of glasses of seltzer while chatting with the bartender. She was working just through the afternoon, before walking down the river to see the show.

I ordered a heaping bowl of gnocchi with pesto and sage, and then used most of the crunchy bread that came before it arrived to soak up the sauce.

"I assume you hated and want it to send it back," the bartender asked, refilling my seltzer and taking away the empty plate. If I thought that might been the ticket to another plate of this gnocchi, I might have actually played along.

  2. Super. Slow.

Went here for lunch on a workday with my coworkers and even 1.5 hours we had set aside wasn't enough time for a meal. We sat at the table for almost 2 hours and spent almost all of it waiting for food.

It took them 20 minutes to get soda and 2 glasses of wine out. Took over an hour for the pizzas to be made and they were soggy in the center. Couldn't really pick it up and eat it. Also I made my own pizza and they got the order wrong, but didn't really feel like waiting another hour for a new one to be made.

The ambience was really nice, good crowd of people. But not worth the wait or price.

  3. One of the best spots in downtown BK for pizza or pasta! Favorites include fettuccine bolognese, and the "Rosa" make your own pizza. For a pasta dish, I highly recommend swapping out their traditional pastas for gluten free pasta (which does NOT cost extra, but tastes great just the same!) I also get a side of broccoli rabe and mix that in with my bolognese and it is a-mazing.

Obviously can't go wrong with the make your own pizza. Its basically a personal pie cut in 4ths but you can easily get two meals out if it if you are not super duper hungry. Be sure to ask for mozzarella (or another kind of cheese) because it is not included on the pie unless you ask! The pizza comes out lightning fast and on a few occasions, the dough was a little soggy in the middle of the pie (could have used some more time in their wood-burning oven.) So beware if you love your crust crispy, ask for well done.

I come here a lot to grab a drink and bite after work, on my way home. Always sit at the bar and have a great time! Also LOVE the olive oil dip that comes with bread; the olive oil is loaded with lentils and it is a great starter for your meal. Be sure to ask for some if they don't bring it out right away 🙂

  4. I can't believe it's taken me this long to review Forno Rosso–my absolute favorite pizza in Brooklyn! It's a cute little place with a warm industrial feel and tucked just off of Flatbush Ave. We love that it's never overly crowded here and the service is always prompt. They have some happy hour specials (no pizzas) that are a decent deal.

The main attraction here are the pizzas. Everything is excellent (we have tried pastas and salads and desserts) but the pizza is outstanding. We usually go for the traditional margherita and the one of a kind tartufata—a white pizza with mushrooms and truffle oil and is out of this world! Absolutely fresh and delicious!  We also enjoy the arugula salad–big and perfect to share, as well as the Nutella desserts.

Could not more highly recommend a pizza spot!

  5. The wait staff moves pretty slow although they are really friendly. I got a calzone which was a huge portion but the inside was still cold when I got my calzone and the top part of the dough was still not cooked because it wasn't in the oven long enough. The flavors were there but it wasn't baked properly cause it was thick. Would definitely recommend just a pizza. Prices are a tad bit on the high side for Brooklyn and Italian food.

  6. The oven is handmade in Naples and  shipped over. The pizza is baked in a 1200 degree oven and is finished baking is 2 1/2 minutes. That is fascinating to me! The pizza has right amount of chew, thinness, and crispy-ness. I would definetly visit again when in Brooklyn!

  7. Very nice pizzeria in downtown Brooklyn.  The space is very large with plenty of seating.  The pizza is very good.  It's similar to Adrian's on Stone St. in lower Manhattan.  They have white and red individual pies that easily feed 2.

We also had a fried antipasta which had pasta, rice and potato fillings.  This was also very good.

Service and price is right.  Head on over!

  8. Great pizza, great location, and very friendly staff. Can not complaint about anything. I sat at the bar and enjoyed a cold glass of local brew. Had a salad and a personal pizza. Everything was done perfectly. Competitive prices and very close to the Hampton hotel I was  staying at. Will have to visit next time i'm in Brooklyn for sure.
