For the two Jamaicans staring out of the frost covered window, it was almost unimaginably cold.
"It is minus five degrees outside, right?" The woman turned to me. "This is the coldest in 30 years."
I checked my phone, and well, it might have been cold, it just wasn't that cold. Certainly, however, it is quite a change from the average weather in Kingston.
The weather was enough to keep the client base of this Crown Heights establishment away. I have no doubt that any other night I'd see a steady stream of West Indian people coming in for takeout, grabbing some curry chicken or stewed goat on their way out the door.
On this day, I was alone, stopping in between work and some cat feeding duties for a friendly vacationing in warmer climes.
I had a small jerk chicken combo, served in a trickily compact carrying case. When I moved to a table, a glass plate was brought over and revealed that this was much more food than it originally appeared. The most surprising thing was the price – $6 for a full meal.
There's plenty of competition for this type of food in the area and the borough at large, and the Four Seasons isn't haute or distinctive as the name suggests. It's two block Jamaican, not 20 mile Jamaican.
And when the weather finally thaws out, that should be enough.
