Frankie & Ava’s Italian Eatery

  1. Innocent until proven guilty right? 4 stars might be a little premature since this place just recently opened, and I happened to be starving at 4:30 when Washington is still kind of quiet, but something has to be said for the fact that I devoured my sandwich in unladylike fashion.

There were 2 guys at the counter, and together they helped me narrow down my choice. I picked a hot sandwich over cold, meat over veggies, and that is how I arrived at the Chicken Parm. It seemed to be one of their signatures, so why the heck not. While I waited, I saw they had some pre-made pizzas and chicken cutlets out on the counter. I didn't see either of them grab one of the pre-made cutlets for my sandwich so that was reassuring. I'm sure when things get busy, they just reheat. Anyway, I took it to-go and when I finally sat to eat I was impressed. 3 layers of tender chicken, not overly breaded, smothered in fresh mozzarella and great Italian bread. My only complaint was that I wish there was more sauce or least some extra on the side. It wasn't jaw dropping, but for under $10, very much worth it. I ate the entire thing so that has to count for something. Normally, it comes with fries but I wasn't in need of more carbs so I went for a side salad.

Eager to come back and try a couple other things.

  2. We had a great dinner here the other night! We were a big group and the staff worked hard to accommodate us.

My boyfriend and I split the calamari and the small truffle mushroom pizza, and both were delicious. The prices were great too. Our total bill for the 2 of us was $21.

I also like how you order up front and they bring the food to you. That made it so much easier since we were such a big group.

All of the employees were so friendly and helpful. My only complaint is that they don't have ice there, but one of the workers ran next door to get our table some.

BYOB, excellent service and food. I can't wait to go back!

  3. Decent italian food. Cafe Michelina remains as my favorite italian spot in hoboken. I ordered the meatball parmigiana sandwich which came with a side of fries. The only thing that I enjoyed about the sandwich was  the homemade marinara sauce but the sandwich barely had any of it!

  4. This eatery caught me by surprise because it's so different than the previous bar/restaurants that have run the space in the past. I'd say 3 1/2 stars with potential.

Frankie & Ava's is Italian casual, makers of fresh Italian heroes, panini, pastas, soups and salads. (The menu is huge) A typical lunch/soft drink combo will run you about $12, about average for Washington Street these days, but rest assured the portions are large and you may take half of your lunch home for another day.

I tried the meatball parm sandwich, meatballs lacked the flavor of the true Italian spices but they are homemade. It comes with really delicious french fries. The service is nice, the restaurant is very clean with small tables spaciously spread around the room.

Frankie & Ava's delivers and also caters.  I look forward to visiting again and trying other items from the menu.

  5. Wow, first time here and the food is pretty amazing! Came here for lunch over the weekend and ordered the Zarillo sandwich – chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella bruschetta, arugula and balsamic vinaigrette. The sandwich was nice and warm when I got it. The flavors mesh well together. The mozzarella and bruschetta were really fresh, the bread was fluffy and the cutlet was delicious. I'm really glad I found this place b/c I always love a good sandwich. Will certainly be back again to try their other sandwiches.

  6. Been waiting try Frankie and Ava's for a while now. It's a nice generous space, very open and has outdoor seating to enjoy the summer.

The husband and I split the Endive salad and the Gardillo sandwich – both were fairly okay. The sandwich was simple, and slightly under-seasoned…on the drier side. The spread on the sandwich is a basil oil, but it was quite sparse, making the bread hard to chew.

I appreciate that they have an extensive menu and something for everyone. I'm curious to try their pastas.

  7. Wish I could give 3.5 stars.  Ordered take-out at 6:30 on a Friday and they delivered by 7. Very impressive!

We split one order of rice balls (2 with a side of marinara), one Caesar salad, and a chicken parm sandwich (comes with fries). Food was pretty good, especially for the price!  Enjoyed the salad and sandwich…liked their mozzarella and sauce, Italian bread was good as well. Wish the rice balls had a little more flavor.

Our total came to around $20, and there was plenty of food for both of us to split everything.  Would definitely like to come in for lunch!
