I enjoy coming to this market. It's a short walk up the hill from my apartment. The produce is always fresh and they have a nice assortment of unique and specialty items along with the usual fare.
For the size of this market, their cheese and olive section is amazing. It's huge! And they have some really cool seasonal and hard-to-find beers.
A few people have mentioned the high prices, and yes they're not wrong, but I don't mind spending a little extra on things you can find everywhere else.
White coarse salt with black truffle…and escargot…
This is a pretentious market. This is also one of the very few grocery stores in the entire area that sells anything mildly healthy. I live right next to the C-Town on 163rd and they barely sell whole wheat bread let alone anything else of substance. However, walking up the steps (sorry didn't count) to get to this store from the west side burned enough calories that I can eat a slice of Wonder Bread and not worry about the effects! Anyway, after dealing with Ctown, this store was a welcome breath of fresh air!
The produce was nice. It reminds me of a Garden of Eden or something like that near Columbia University.
It's a bit pricey…but if you shop frequently and don't buy in bulk it isn't too expensive, although their frozen goods are a bit extortionist! Their coffee (decaf) was pretty nasty.
Associated is just down the street, literally, so if you're looking for frozen fruit to make a smoothie or cereal for your organic milk head there because it will be cheaper.
On a fantastic note though, their selection of beer was nice and they had this enormous, half gallon bottle of Maiboch (?) which looked great for a party and it wasn't too expensive.
Will go back again for sure!
I think I like the idea of this place more than the actual place itself. It is a charming, local specialty grocery, that carries lots of items that you often can't find in other markets (seasonal ales, foreign chocolates, etc.). It is also open pretty late (11 PM), which is very convenient, and has some pretty nice and helpful staff.
However, mostly because I am a poor student, I find that I can't afford most of the stuff here, especially in light of the fact that there is an Associated Market right up the block. The price difference can be staggering..a good 2 or 3 dollars more for the same exact product over here, than at Associated.
However, when I am buying beer for a party, I do tend to go here as the selection is usually much better than anywhere else in the area.
I sort of agree with everything everyone else said so far. But my hands are tied, because it's basically the only show in town, as far as this neighborhood is concerned. Good luck finding any other out-of-the-ordinary food anywhere else! Yes, some things are crazily-overpriced (i.e. their cheese), but other things seem to be around the prices everywhere else (i.e. coffee beans). On the whole, you'll definitely end up paying more, so do your basic shopping elsewhere (except things that are too heavy to carry from downtown, grrr) and save Frank's for the Carr's Lemon Creme and Ginger cookies and Ciao Bella Blood Orange Sorbet (extremely-highly recommended, btw.), Balthazar bread, and nice Belgian beer.
They have some great items, but many of them are overpriced, even for NYC. Also, be careful when buying fresh, prepared food, dairy, etc…It may have a sell buy date for a few days or a week later, but there are times I have seen mold or something has been off right when I get it home. Annoying. Also, their cashiers are consistently unfriendly. The layout of the store also makes it challenging to walk around in.
I have come to love and embrace Frank's for a myriad of reasons since moving to Hudson Heights this past summer.
They now carry SoCo Creamery ice cream, which is made back where I grew up. They have a large assortment of hard ciders, which pleases the girl right here that is allergic to beer. They have Bruce Cost's pomegranate ginger ale. They are the ONLY store I can find with my precious…errrr, my So Delicious Vanilla Coconut Milk. They even have a DVD rental machine full of top notch movies, like, well…I think I saw "Snow Dogs" in there. Boy howdy, the day I actually want to rent that, I can't wait to!
Still, two gripes, and they are MAJOR: I can't stand any of their desserts or sushi! I tried their red velvet cake to much disappointment when I first moved to the neighborhood. Their avocado rolls are always hard and dry. I decided to treat myself to a piece of their crème brûlée cheesecake tonight, and I suppose the third time is NOT the charm.
Still, I don't HAVE to buy dessert or sushi here. I can love the rest of what this place has to offer and be perfectly content.
Tra la laaa.
Fancy supermarket in Hudson Heights, near my girlfriend's apartment. I got a Montreal style bagel here, with lox, cream cheese, and onion. I was pleasantly surprised that they sell Montreal style bagels here. I also bought some basic groceries here. I feel it's a little daunting to shop in a place with so few aisles. It's a little hard to find stuff.
