  1. Went there late Friday around 11pm. Seemed as if there was only 1 waiter for about 10 tables. Took forever to get drinks. The check literally took 20 minutes and we could've easily walked out. As far as the food, the penne pasta in basil marinara was totally bland and void of flavor.  I make better at home.

  2. Great spot to meet friends after work in the evenings.

Their warm apple cider is delicious and is a nice way to wind down after a long day; and it provides a nice intro for the palate if drinks are to follow.

The only entree i can opine on is the mac and cheese which is a great comfort on these cold days. It was cooked and baked to perfection including the noodles which were al dente.  The server Kristina was very affable and attentive, and the overall vibe of the restaurant is chic, a lil bit vintage, and very cozy.

  3. *** DRINKS ***

I only came here for the drinks after work.

Beer mugs full of Ommegang Witte? Oh Y E S.

More beer mugs of Ommegang Witte? Oh Y E S again.

Closing at 2am when I just got here at 1:30am? Oh N O.

This place looks like a nice date place. I will try that theory when I sit down and eat here next time.

    FAN.

  4. Food: Very Good
    Service: Excellent
Ambiance: Excellent. What I imagine a neighborhood place feels like in non touristy Paris

I came here for dinner on a Sunday night for dinner.
We were seated immediately and the hostess was very friendly and pleasant.
The place was not completely packed but had most of the tables filled with families, couples and groups of friends having dinner. I loved the vibe this place has. Perfect to just hang out and chat with friends.
We ordered spicy eggplant dip with pita. Which was very good. I also tried their burger, it was juicy and delicious.
For dessert I had Vanilla gelato and it was pretty decent not the best but not bad at all.
Overall the food is not 4 stars worthy but still very good but what puts this place over the top is the ambience and service.

  5. The menu has changed recently for the worse. They no longer do Tapas Tuesdays and the regular menu seems a lot more limited now. Most recently, I had the special burger – it was huge with a lot of fixings – cheese, au jus sauce, etc. It was a lot and tasted just OK.

  6. It's 2 AM. You just saw a midnight UCB show and now want to eat because you either didn't eat before or you're a gluttonous AZN like me with an enviably fast metabolism. But you want to avoid the gastropub or 24-hour diner options. What to do!?

The idea of French Roast is awesome. French food late at night! Like L'Express, it's an all-night (or close to all-night) operation. Unfortunately, I just didn't think the food was that good, and instead of "you get what you pay for," it felt like "you get what you stay up for." For one, the late-night menu is less extensive than its other late-night counterpart. Our group had pate, French onion soup, and I had a burger. Everything was strictly OK. The pate came with unpardonably hard bread — like trying to bite into an eraser! — and we ended up just using the basket of soft bread to eat it. Burger was better but nothing fancy, and while I die for a brioche bun, the presentation was just kind of ugly. It looked like a "sad" and droopy burger.

L'Express has its issues, but it's still your #1 go-to option for late-night French, I think.

  7. I've been here twice now (for brunch both times) and generally speaking, this is a nice place to go if you can't get a table anywhere else in Chelsea because it's so packed. Pretty basic average food – the pancakes are filled with ricotta so they are extra fluffy. I've also gotten the shakshuka, which had incredibly runny eggs – great if you're into that but I had to send them back. The feta cheese was a nice touch. Don't forget to check out their special menu of the day, and also get yourself a side of home fries and a belini because DAMN they're good.

  8. Friday night dinner for two call upon French.  Unable to travel this year with great disappoint, I find other means to enjoy ethnic foods as French in a very diverse large metropolitan city as New York.  The relaxed atmosphere, wall mirrors and food selection it reminisce my past visit to Paris, France.  Not exactly fine dinning indeed but gets the job done to eat our fill.  Priced is slightly more than moderate but is expected for a French Bistro.
    For Him:
Burger on Brioche with thin cut Fries $14.50- with fresh strong Bermuda onions juicy with flavor to eat his fill

    For Her:
Duck Confit with Frisee salad $16.00 – very tender and prepared very juicy but small in portion to keep in true French fashion that food portions are small.  The dried cherries were refreshing though I never cared for black olives.  The Frisee salad with red wine vinaigrette was okay.

I highly desired my default favorite French entree of Steak Frites, but with a limited budget I opt out.  One uni-sex restroom facility is available on the premise in decent clean condition with a working fan that emits air outdoor.  Table service is efficient but rather sketchy as our waiter was being dismissive for the lack thereof business cards.  Boisterously loud.  I wish Yelp give half stars rating distribution.  My rating for French Roast leans toward 3.5 stars.
