Teeny-tiny mart, 2 people-width aisles. You have a meat/fish/poultry counter at the back and 2-3 aisles of Japanese snacks, candies, dry ingredients. You've also got an aisle of Japanese stationery/cosmetics/cooking utentils etc.
Frozen food lines the left side of the mart. They do have some ready made food/lunches available as well as a plethora of over priced soft drinks–whatcha get for everything being imported!
It's really a grab and go place…not worth buying a week's supply of groceries as the aisles cannot handle a shopping cart. No alcohol–no liquor license so don't expect any sake or shochu. They don't sell individually wrapped ice cream for those afternoons you want to fix your craving for red bean icecream or mochi icecream without having to buy a whole boxful of them which is a bummer!
Maybe it's just me but after spending 10 minutes or so there, it's a little strange not buying anything. Especially when the sales girl knows how long you've been there as the mart is so small. But I just can't find anything worth getting so…be prepared to feel like you're stealing when you're not as you walk out empty handed 😛
This Japanese grocery store has always been a great place to pick up raw fish for make-your-own sushi and sashimi. But the room next door to this store also offers us a fabulous, sit-down ramen joint.
With it's plain-Jane tables and decor, it's a stretch to call it a restaurant. Plus, it's only open during the day. This family-run business closes up by 7 p.m. on most nights (and closed Mondays; closed by 6:30 Sundays).
The ramen is as good as anything I've had in NYC. And oh, the soup! White bone broth — usually made from pork bones boiled to death — brings extra flavor. The chef is also very generous with additional ingredients (sliced veggies & meat added to each ramen serving).
For more than ramen, check out the refrigerator case off to the side of the room. You'll find little plastic containers filled with home-made side dishes of varying degrees of deliciousness. The potato salad was only okay. But I found the octopus salad quite good.
