  1. Ramen was tasty but I wouldn't say amazing. The service was great. Our waitress brought us some complimentary edamame and takoyaki. The takoyaki were fried on the outside and nice and soft in the middle – delicious. I also like that it's BYOB. There's a liquor store around the corner if you need a beer. Only complaints I had were that the spicy miso ramen wasn't as spicy as I had hoped and the ramen needed more broth.

  2. I think I speak on behalf of the majority when I say: This place has the balls to open up three doors down from Ani Ramen!

I finally had the opportunity to try Fujiya Ramen last night with a large group of my family and friends. I say "finally", because I saw the storefront under construction several weeks back anticipating it's opening. Our party consisted of 9 people, so I had called a couple of hours in advanced to ensure that they had enough seating for us and they were easily accommodating.

Now, let's get down to business! If you're standing on Bloomfield Avenue and can't decide between Fujiya Ramen and Ani Ramen here's where each has the better hand:

    Fujiya Ramen:
    – faster service
    – larger space
    – bar counter seating
    – complimentary Ajitama (half an egg, not a full egg)

    Ani Ramen:
    – larger ramen portions
    – better edamame (hands down!)
    – has better small bite/appetizer options
    – plenty add-on options, extra noodle option

***Both do not have take-out or doggy bag options, and price points are the same.***

For the Ramen/Food Connoisseurs, I would say it's based on your preference and your style. The edamane is your average edamame. The boneless fried chicken with spicy sauce is super crunchy and reminds me a lot of Bonefish Grill's bang bang shrimp sauce, which is basically spicy mayo sauce.  The chasu pieces at FR are cut slightly thinner than I would like. I had ordered the miso ramen, but in all honesty, it's wasn't so miso-y. The pork broth was way better. Overall, the broths are slightly milder at Fujiya, more traditional, but sadly, the broth portions are smaller.

Leaving Fujiya Ramen, I went home NOT full. And while this may or may not make much of a difference to many, I felt like there was a little less TLC in my food. Like that Sarah Michelle Gellar movie when she has her own restaurant and whatever she feels at the time she makes her food, her customers feel as they consume the food?? Your "bigger" factory style kitchen, results in factory food, thus why I'm giving them 4 stars.

As a Montclarian, I hope they do well, even though it means a little friendly competition for Ani Ramen (well not in the stylistic sense), but I think Fujiya Ramen is just another voice for more demand for authentic Asian, authentic ramen food, good food, in downtown Montclair.

  3. I'm not an avid ramen eater. It's not that I don't like it but I'm just a huge fan of soondubu and pho that I never go out of my way to try out any ramen places unless a friend insists. Well, my boyfriend urged me to try Fujiya Ramen out to compare it to our previous experience at neighboring Ani Ramen (haven't been back to Ani Ramen since our first time there, by the way). And I must say that this initial visit to Fujiya Ramen beats out Ani Ramen by a small margin.

Came to Fujiya Ramen for a late Friday night dinner with my mom. We called ahead to ensure that we wouldn't be waiting for too long because we were starving. At around 9PM, the restaurant had numerous vacant tables. We were seated immediately upon arrival.

Our waiter was friendly and attentive, giving us enough time to take a look at the menu, considering it was our first visit there. He mentioned the evening's appetizer special: Takoyaki. Ordered it without hesitation because I LOVE takoyaki. I loved it! One order came with six pieces of octopus-stuffed goodness. They were nice and warm and extremely flavorful. The aioli that was on top was so good. I could lick it off a spoon.

As for our "main course," I got the Miso Ramen and my mom got the Fujiya Kaisen Ramen. It took a little while for our ramen to get to our table so our waiter gave us some edamame to munch on while waiting. When the ramen finally came, the broth was nice and hot. You might be thinking, "Duh, it's soup of course it's gonna be hot." Well, when we went to Ani Ramen, our food was barely luke warm (I'm gonna say it was an off night for them). Anywho, my Miso Ramen came with three pieces of pork belly chashu, bamboo shoots, corn, half an egg and scallions. I really enjoyed my ramen! The broth was flavorful enough for my tastebuds and got the job done. As for my mom, she enjoyed her ramen as well but didn't think the shrimp was fresh. She still devoured it, anyways.

All in all, great first experience here. Service was great and everyone was extremely attentive. BYOB if you're into that. My mom's not so it was a sweet, sober dinner for us. We'll be back!

  4. It's been about two years since I was last in Montclair, but Fujiya Ramen has only sprouted up not even a month since the time of this review. The ramen craze in NYC has been breaching NJ, and this is a welcome addition. Fujiya bills themselves as "authentic," and I have to say, it's pretty good stuff.

Access is no problem. You can park easily in the back, and the dining area is spacious–there's seating for at least 20 in there. Our party of 3 on a Tuesday night was seated immediately. The ambiance is sleek and well-lit, very modern. Even the ramen bowls modern, vase-like and of questionable depth. (Don't worry, the serving sizes are generous.) Service is very friendly, knowledgeable about the menu. Ask away for recommendations and spice levels.

Oh, and this is probably an opening promotion: we got a small plate of edamame and some takoyaki (octopus pancake ball) complimentarily with our meal. We also ordered some gyoza dumplings, which make for a great appetizer anywhere.

The ramen itself is delicious. We got the seafood, tonkotsu, and spicy miso ramens. Each came with a different, uniquely seasoned broth and a variety of fresh toppings. Be careful because it can be piping hot (even the toppings) when it arrives at your table! The noodles were the same, thin, egg-based type for each bowl. They are soft, and slightly stick together but come apart easily. The spice level isn't particularly spicy. The toppings are freshly made; the chashu is juicy and tender, the egg is perfectly gelatinous. Tbh, the broth is the star of the show. It's customized to each bowl and deeply flavored without being too salty, the kind of thing you could endlessly chug on when you're feeling under the weather.

One of our party said this beats Ani Ramen (a few doors over) any day. While I haven't had Ani myself, I have to agree that Fujiya is some of the best I've had in a while.
