Fukurou
“This place was great for a casual dinner, and the avocado tofu is strangely amazing.”
“Speaking of the heavenly, the chicken wings are simple but there's nothing else like it!”
“The salmon and salmon roe rice and the omelette-wrapped soba noodles (omu yakisoba) were also dishes that the whole group enjoyed.”

I confess myself… Disappointed. I've had my eye on this place for a while and came in with high expectations. Sadly, there really wasn't much that stood out. It's mostly fine (not the pork), but noting you will feel the need to come back for.
Japanese Pickles – pretty standard. A few pieces were really nicely done, and a few were just meh.
Fried Taro Root – fried just enough to get the raw, overly starchy flavor out, but only just. Not bad, but nothing to see here.
Grilled Pork Rib – when I think of Japanese pork, I expect soft, tender, almost melty meat. This was so chewy, if felt like it was cooked as quickly as possible without getting the meat at all tender. Do not order this.
Simmered Cod – good, but nothing special. I think cod is one of those things that kinda hard to mess up, so they succeeded in not Doug that.
Fried Octopus and Squid – good mix of chunks of octopus and squid, but similar to the pork, it was all chewy bordering on crunchy.
Salmon and Salmon Roe Rice – one of the better dishes. The flavors of the salmon and the roe mixed well throughout the rice and was well seasoned throughout.
Overall I wasn't really that into anything we had. Service was fine and prices were reasonable ($50 per person for 3 people with drinks and the above, tip included).
Will I be back? Nah. There are so many better places for Japanese cuisine in the city.
Feels like found nice spot to get some Japanese Izakaya dishes in West Village. Although I had no information about this place, I had to jump into this location as we were so starving and road was packed with crowd of people during Halloween night. As my girl friend was craving for something fresh and light to eat, I though this would be nice choice and I was right.
They have small spaces with less than 10 tables with bar sitting. I was lucky that I didn't need to wait for table. We only tried sashimi plate with raw beef yet I could see how the food looks like as they have picture of food on their menu, and they look really nice. All the foods were nice. It wasn't super8 quality but ok freshness with great taste.
Service wasn't really great thou. Wait staff seems like need much more training. They were so confused with serving less than 10 tables. I think they need some work on management.
I will try to visit them someday later to try some other dishes with sake.
I wanted to like this place, and it can totally be my fault because I went in expecting it to replace dinner, and it's probably best served only to come here for drinks and maybe one or two snacks, and then head elsewhere to get your fill because other than the avocado tofu (which is GREAT btw), everything else was kind of…just alright.
I don't know if I was hoping to have the Taro Croquette and Tamago Ippon Yaki be something more than it was because the croquette was a little one note and the tamago…I don't know what to say. It wasn't bad, but seriously, nothing of note. Same thing with the Omu Yakisoba. I wasn't (and still not) quite sure if I should be paying what I was paying. It's been a few weeks since coming here and I'm still just as confused.
The only thing that really didn't get a pass at our table was the Zuru Teba. It's weird. It was definitely cooked, but had a texture like it wasn't cooked. I've honestly never had chicken like that before. It was reminiscent of the Chinese cold poached chicken, but because it wasn't cold…it just left us confused.
This is my new favorite Japanese joint, which incidentally also lies in my favorite nyc neighborhood. There is likely to be a wait for a table since it is not a big place so it is definitely not an ideal place for hosting a party. That aside, everything else hit the spot, esp the range of sake, beer and food choices.
My favorite two dishes would have to be the avocado tofu and amazing chicken wings. The tofu was incredibly creamy and had such a unique quality to it that I enjoyed every single bite. Thumbs up for the wings as well, which is actually referred to as the "amazing chicken wings" in the menu! It was probably the best wings I have had in my life. Never has it been that juicy and soft and packed with flavor! Just the right texture and flavor balance! I even had second helpings.
You have to end the meal with black sesame ice cream! No other way. I can't wait for my next trip there!
Pure Japanese simplicity at its finest.
I happened across Fukurou a few months ago while walking around the Village, and I was excited to finally make a reservation. We were warned when we arrived that they were short two chefs, so food time would longer than usual. Luckily it didn't feel too crazy during the actual meal.
We went for four dishes: the AMAZING chicken wings, avocado tofu, mackerel, and pickled veggie plate. The tofu came out first. Presentation-wise, it was beautiful. The perfectly shaped rectangles made for a great photo. Flavor and texture wise, it was just like eating avocado. I was expecting more bounce from the tofu in the name, but it literally tasted like avocado in cube form.
Next were the chicken wings. While they weren't the best wings I've ever had, they were downright tasty. Seasoned with salt and pepper, the wings were grilled to a perfect moist level. They're the perfect bar food.
The mackerel was the simplest but arguable the tastiest dish on the table. The fish tasted so fresh and with that lemon drizzle, I could eat it every day.
The pickled veggies were the wild card. The celery and cucumbers were so tasty. However the cabbage and another unidentifiable vegetable were a little too salty and had a weird flavor.
For a Sunday night, the crowd was super busy. I wouldn't expect there to be many openings on a higher traffic weekend night, but the availability of reservations make Fukurou a great Japanese option in the area.
I came here on a Sunday and didn't have to wait. My friend found Fukurou through Yelp and both agree that the food looks good.
The avocado tofu that most people recommended I didn't really like. I prefer more a creamy avocado taste but the soy taste was too strong.
The chicken wings had slightly too much salt and pepper but it still tasted really good.
The omu yakisoba, the yakisoba itself had a lot of sauce is distribute very well with the noodle.
The services is okay, the food is interesting and I feel like most of their food is good but there's something missing in each of them.I would come back other dishes from the menu!
(DOWN SIDE: It's a bit pricey).
I bookmarked this place a while ago and was very excited to eat there as the place has some nice review. The plum wine was delicious! I had the fried brie that was very good. I ate them by myself but it is something to share because it is a little bit greasy.
I also had some sushi that was very good. unfortunately i did not like the white sauce. no flavor.
Finally I have the fried seaweed. same thing as the brie bite I ate them by myself byt as it is fried it's something to share as an appetizer.
'Will come back because I want to try other stuff in their menu. It is not a sushi place it's a Japanese menu!
Amazing super cool Japanese tapas style restaurant! We went on a Thursday night which was perfect because there was a very light crowd. The weekends get packed at this location. The decor, wait staff and food were awesome! We ordered everything imaginable and were pleased with all items! Will return!
