This spot has the best empanadas with awesome fast service. I highly recommend their 3 cheese empanada, sweet plantain and cheese and the Cuban. Fried or baked it doesn't matter because both are excellent with high quality ingredients and non greasy which is always a plus in my book. If you are in the area definitely give this spot a try.
A small pizzeria sized restaurant serving delicious empanadas and Latin cuisine. Came here for lunch and was pleasantly surprised with the offerings like crab cakes and lobster empanadas for such reasonable prices.
We tried the braised short rib empanada, cuban sandwich one and chipolte chicken. My personal favorite was the braised short rib, as it was nice and juicy meat. We didn't even bother with the baked option, although I did appreciate that they had it. It $2.50 each.
As for lunch I ordered the chicharrones de pollo with white rice and red beans. I really loved the red beans, I just wish there were more of them! You get basically half a plate of rice and only one small bowl of beans. The chicken itself was really well seasoned well and a good portion only $8.
Overall the food was good, we had a baby with us who threw rice and cherrios everywhere and there was not one mean glare. The star off is because it was a muggy 95 degrees today and they had the ac off and just the door open. Also, the waitress was not very helpful, asked what we wanted from over the counter versus coming up to the table.
Finally be aware there is parking in the back, but it is shared by 3 businesses and the parking signs on main ave are super shady.
The empanadas at this spot are some legitimate legit-ness!
Lunch special: 3 emapanadas + soda = $5.50.
While 3 empanadas should be enough to sate one's hunger, let's be real here, you'll probably end up ordering more. That $5.50 can easily snowball to $15.
Both meatarians and vegetarians can live a good life here. I ordered the maduros con queso, spinach and ricotta and mushroom medley. Of the three, the mushroom was my favorite. I didn't care for the spinach and ricotta much. Tasted like all spinach, no ricotta. For dessert – which is also an empanada– I had the nutella and banana. You can never, ever, ever in life go wrong with nutella and banana so needless to say it was delicious. My peeps tried the dulce de leche, which left much to be desired. According to them, it was anything but ducle de leche and tasted like a Mc Donald's apple pie.
Empanadas are either fried or baked – your choice. Be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes for the baked goods.
Parking in front of resto has a 15 minute limit, but there are ample parking spots on the side streets.
Definitely a good spot to add to the lunch rotation.
Fusion Empanada should be enjoyed as a take-out restaurant only. We went for a sit down dinner and felt that it was not the usual for the restaurant/staff. There are only a few tables amongst the small space. We decided we wanted a sampling of empanadas and asked the kitchen to put together two dozen platters for us. It was clever of the restaurant to imprint numbers on the shell of the empanada so you could reference a card with a listing of all the varieties.
Among all the empanadas, the best we tried were the Cuban, spinach/cheese, and the plantain stuffed. The dessert empanadas were also savory and sweet. You can also order your empanadas fried or baked. The main issue we had with Fusion Empanada was the service. This definitely knocked a 4 star review to a 3 star. The staff was very young and it felt as though we were rushed. Only go for take-out, since it seemed like they had a pretty good lunch special for empanadas and a drink for a fair price.
I checked in this spot about a week ago and just got around to writing a review. It was 7 pm on a Saturday night and the place was empty. I was in the mood for a variety of empanadas but was disappointed when the woman behind the counter said they didn't have the short rib, philly cheese steak or the cuban. She didn't provide an explanation but only said they weren't available. I thought it was a bit odd to not have these popular ones since it was a weekend and it wasn't even near closing time. So I left empty handed with my stomach growling….thus, the 2 star rating.
This place is fantastic!
My friend and I were passing through Paramus and saw this place on Yelp with decent reviews. Our decision to stop has been my favorite decision of this road trip so far!
The space is small and probably gets a bit stuffy in the heat of summer, but the service, food, and atmosphere were all good. There are only a few tables, and we were there for an early dinner (around 5) and were the only ones there at first, but the tables were filling up by the time we were finishing up. The waitstaff was helpful, and double-checked on a couple of items for us. The food came out well-timed and the Spanish guitar muzak was a non-distracting touch. Most of the dishes seemed to be Puerto Rican.
We split three different empanadas for an appetizer: beef & maduros, chicken chipotle, and the mushroom and fontina. All three fried (natch). All were great, though if pressed, I'd order them from amazing (beef) to great (mushroom) to really good (chicken).
My friend got a pork dinner (whose name I have forgotten, sorry) with the most perfect roast pork chunks, white rice and drunk pinto beans, and a pretty solid side salad with mesclun, tomato and a balsamic. The pork had a crisp crust and was tender. The portion (for around $11) was generous.
I had the piononos appetizer (beef wrapped in plantains) and the salad special (watermelon and feta)–the combination of the two was sufficient for dinner. Lots of ripe watermelon chunks, seasoned, mild feta, mesclun, onion and an oil and vinegar based dressing. It came in a large pasta bowl. The pionono appetizer was two rounds of spiced beef wrapped in glazy plantains. Plenty to share (though I barely did).
Check this place out, but just in case, go early. I have no doubt it fills up.
If youre looking for a quick snack, with many different types of options based on what you like to eat, youve found the right spot. Although this place is really small, they carry quite a few different types of empanadas. One of the main things that i really loved about these empanadas are the crust and shell of them. They were crunchy, but soft..that basically melted in your mouth. They were so flaky and delicious, i hate when i eat an empanada and the shell is too hard and overcooked that i taste more of the outside rather than the inside.
I am telling you to get the lobster and/or the mushroom one. I dont eat beef, pork, or chicken but i assume those are awesome too. The mushroom had big chunks of mushrooms with a creamy sauce that just dribbled out. Surprisingly, there was a fair share of lobster in the one i had. You can actually taste it! After i ordered mine, i saw there was a truffled lobster mac n cheese one, my heart stopped…i WILL try this next time. I had the shimp one also, it wasnt terrible but i felt the shrimp tasted like frozen shrimp and i tasted more pepper in the mix.
Lastly, i will always save room for dessert. The Smores dessert empanada was amazing. Who couldnt drool over nutella and marshmellow and graham cracker melted together? Ugh, orgasm in MY MOUTH.
Theyre reasonably priced and hey guess what, they even have a lunch special! 3 emps and a soda for $6, thats a deal even a cheap ass like me wouldnt turn down!
Get your booty over here!
The empanadas were great! My friends and I ordered two dozen empanadas and asked the staff to give us a variety of flavors, 1 dozen baked and 1 dozen fried, so we got to sample a good portion of the menu. We also ordered about six dessert empanadas. When they were served, the empanadas had small numbers imprinted on them and we had a card that showed which flavor corresponded to each number. We enjoyed all of them, but the standouts were the maduros con queso, the Cuban, and the Nutella dessert. The dough tasted fresh and both the baked and fried were enjoyable.
While we really enjoyed the food, I would go back to Fusion Empanada for take-out or order delivery rather than eat in again. Our server seemed really uninterested and we felt like we had to rush out as soon as we finished our meal. It's also very small inside, so there's not a lot of room for groups.
