Gan Da Sushi

“My favorite food on their menu is the tuna tar-tar, the spicy tuna roll, craig roll and the volcano roll.”

“It's a bit pricey for a sushi place next to St. John's (Hint: St. John's discount in the near future?”

  1. This place is so unassuming from the outside. I've lived in this area for my whole life and just noticed Gan Da.

While I noticed most of their business is catering to take out, we decided to sit down for a meal. Opening the menu, I was immediately taken aback by their options. There are three pages of a variety of rolls — tempura, baked, regular. Most of their rolls are super creative!

    We ordered:
    – Ake Tofu: fried bean curd with special sauce
    – Edamame
    – James Bond roll: chopped tuna, fried calamari, crunch, avocado, scallion, sweet sauce
    – U.S.A. roll: spicy tuna, crunch, avocado, top salmon, red caviar, spicy sauce
    – Tokyo dinner box w/ pork katsu: came with Miso Soup, Salad, Shrimp, Tempura, Sushi, Sashimi, Udon

It seemed to be a busy night (and I later found out one of the sushi chefs was sick), so the food took a while to come out. However, I read a review before saying that it takes a while for the food, so I expected the wait. It was a manageable wait and occupied ourselves with conversation until the food came.

The portion for the dinner box was beyond my imagination. Everything was delicious, but figured next time we would only get the regular dinner box since the sashimi and sushi were a little redundant with the same fish. Between my SO and I, we could barely finish everything we ordered. The Ake Tofu was delicious and so was the sauce that accompanied it. The lady that worked there constantly emptied the bowl where we discarded our edamame shells! She was really nice and friendly. Both the rolls I had were delicious! Super creative and the fish was fresh.

Definitely will be back to conquer more rolls on their menu. The older gentleman making the rolls is the owner (one of the owners? not sure) and had his son helping him out that night. Kudos for family business!

  2. Given the high ratings that people generally give Gan Da Sushi, I was surprised because my experience was not up to par.  I have to honestly give this place two stars, reason being that the sushi rolls had no flavor whatsoever to them.  It felt like I was eating just rice rolled up.  My friends thought the same about the quality of the food that day.  I might or might not give this place a second chance.  The staff are indeed friendly, but the food itself was just not memorable to me.

  3. This place has gone down the hill ever since it started being under new management. The sushi does not taste as fresh anymore and they just don't put in enough effort on making the food. The old owners were more passionate about their place and they were proud of the food that they place on the table. Gan Da used to be the only sushi place I would go to around the St. John's area, but now it's one of the last place on my list.

The only good thing about this place is that the hostess is really nice. She still recognizes me even though I haven't come here in approximately half a year!
I went during their lunch hour special today and I got the Udon which also comes with 6 pieces of california rolls. The california rolls were okay…but really, how hard is it to mess up california rolls right? Now the udon was a different story. First off, the broth was so so plain and tasteless, it was as if they poured straight canned chicken broth into a pot, heat it up with vegetables and call it a day. It was probably even more tasteless than the california rolls. Needless to say, I was very disappointed with the quality. I probably won't be coming back any time soon but I hope they improve their food in the future.

  4. One of the better places to go to for lunch. For the price, quality and quantity you get an awesome lunch special! I've had the bento box: tempura, chicken and sushi all were very filling.

The staff and owners are very very friendly. I've been here multiple times and each time we are greeted with smiles.

Inside is very clean and homey. One of the better places to eat on the block.

My only complaint would be the quality of the sushi rolls, they are not bad but they are not the best either. I feel presentation could look a little better, but the taste is great none the less.

I do recommend to try this place out!

  5. This place is two blocks from St. John's university. I use to come here when I went to college. They have over 100 rolls to choose from. Amazing selections and the size of their rolls are pretty large and consistent. I must have been to this place over 50 times. Never had anything to complain about. The fish is always fresh and tasty. The prices are also very good compared to other sushi restaurants. The place itself is pretty small. About 7 tables that seats a total of 15 people for entire restaurant. Most of the times I order take out because it's pretty busy during the dinner rush. The quality doesn't fail either! They pack it nicely and give enough condiments. Some places stiff you on the size of the rolls and the sauces when you order out. They play very soothing music so it's a nice place to go hideout when you just want to relax on your own and read the paper. There are over 100 rolls of which I have about 15 that I constantly order. Make sure to get the honey bee (sweat potato)  and the KFC (broiled chicken) if you bring a date that doesn't eat sushi. The sushi selection is so diverse it doesn't mean the non sushi eaters can't come enjoy too! It's a nice place for a quiet romantic date or to enjoy with family and friends. There is meeter parking all around. The menu also includes a noodle section if you don't want sushi or teriyaki bento boxes. I come often and it's always a great experience!

  6. Under new management as of April 2015. gone are the nice Korean lady who recognizes me and also the two girls who are always sleeping at the table by the register. I think the new owners are also Korean. But anyways I don't think there has been any major differences other than the fact that they cleaned up the menu (am I the only one overwhelmed by the plethora of rolls they make? So. Damn. Hard. To make up your mind.), added helpful little signs next to rolls that were vegetarian and stuff like that.

I would provide recommendations but I have a really bad habit of not remembering the name of the roll I order, simply because there are so many rolls on the menu. So every time I walk in there or call in an order, I'm back at square one, choosing which rolls I liked. But I can say that their sushi seems pretty fresh, their spicy tuna/salmon is more creamy than spicy from the spicy mayo, and that their prices are affordable. The Gan-da dinner combos are pricey ($15 ish) but they come with so much food it's good enough for two people. Not sure if under new management they're still doing this, but if you order the chicken teriyaki combo, instead of rice, they give you ramen noodles on the side. For ramen addicts like me, that was enough to stay true to Gan-da when ordering Japanese food. We used to get freebies from the Korean lady all the time (a free roll, a few extra slices of salmon sashimi) since we were regulars and ordering from there a lot, but once again not sure if new management does that.

Time will tell if I still love Gan-da with the new owners, but I will write an update if there's anything new!

  7. I really wish Yelp would listen and let us give 1/2 stars because this place is a solid 3.5. I really want to give this mom and pop run place 5 stars. The food is freshly made and the store is cute. They have tons of different sushi rolls. My problem is if you order for delivery or eat in, it takes forever to get your food. I know it's because they're popular with the St. John's crowd and, like I said earlier, they cook to order. But it's so painfully slow. I once had dinner there and the whole meal lasted 2 hours!? Also, many of the rolls end up tasting the same because they put the same sweet sauce over many of them. Don't let this deter you from ordering from here. You just need lots of patience and don't be hangry. I suggest getting any of the teriyakis. It's served over a bed of ramen noodles…yum!

  8. Love this sushi place. They deliver and you can call to pick up your order. It's a very tiny space I wouldn't eat in there, but I do always see one of two tables filled when I go in.

The Beyonce roll is my fav, any roll that is spicy with crunch on it is for me. Definitely as for spicy mayo, it makes everything so much better. Spicy salmon and tuna rolls are amazing too.

I've had fresher sushi before but seeing that this one is a neighborhood establishment, it's very convenient.

The prices are normal and the owners are friendly. Now I want sushi again, also get a side of edamame :).
