I've been coming here for years, actually driving from Yonkers to just specifically go here. And now that I moved to the neighborhood you don't know how happy I am. I haven't been here since I moved into my new place, and all I keep getting is my sister and cousin both yelling at me saying OMG what's wrong with you?? You need to go, blah blah blah. I'm going..
Anyways, a super fresh, wide range of fruits, prepared foods, and mostly CHEESE!! So much cheese that makes me dance through the stinky aisles of bleus and bries!! I'm craving it now..I can live off of stinky cheeses!!!
And opened late!! wohoooooo
This market shows how a supermarket should! It is definitely an oasis among the dozen of supermarket in Kingsbridge.
FACILITY
This supermarket is well organized and clean. All of the aisles are labeled, and everything is in its place . They take advantage of each foot of space to offer a ton of delectable delights. The aisles are small. Shopping carts fit but I couldn't help but feel claustrophobic.
GOODS
They sell everything here: cold-pressed juices, produce, dairy, meets, international goodies, and even a buffet to take your dinner, warm and ready, to go. This is the only supermarket in the area where I found organic chicken. 🙂 I love their cheese section. They have dozens of cheeses. It makes me feel like I'm in an old-school Italian market. The prices are moderate. For you frugalistas out there, they don't have sales flyers.
This place is a Fairway wannabe with the selection, but this place is wayyyyy overpriced. If you work in the city just go to Fairway/TJ/Whole Foods on your way home because this place is WACK.
I came in here on the weekend and they had old, rotting cheese sitting out that should have been refrigerated. I checked the labels of the prepared food…some of it was too days old. Scum floating on top of the olive bar. GROSS!!
Maybe I caught them at a bad time…but I will never come back to this place…ever.
Garden Gourmet used to be a local fruit and vegetable shop under the El, but with expansions in recent years and the addition of new lines of merchandise such as imported cheese and beer and local meats and breads it is becoming much more of a gourmet destination. Prices on breads and cheeses are particularly competitive, ironically more so then on their fruits and veggies. Some departments, noticeability their sweet selection, definitely need an upgrade (their packaged layer cakes look no better than those at a low-end chain supermarket). If you're driving try the strip-mall lot across the street (hey, you must need something at Staples!).
Where do I start?
Pros: organic produce, vegan options, raw options, gluten-free options
CONS: expensive, sales items don't ring up correctly, customer service sucks.
So here's the story- my mom picked up bags of red onions that were 2 for $3 and they rung up for $2.50. Cashier didn't ask for a price check, she just asked the manager who said yes they are $2.50. My mom had to go and get the sign and bring it to the register. Seriously?
I love Garden Gourmet for carrying items I use regularly that are hard to find in the Bronx… soy coffee creamer, vegan cheese and cold cuts, vegan ice cream, and REAL olive oil (you can tell it's not fake because it has a "harvest date").
ATTENTION YELPERS WITH CARS! You can use the free parking lot on W 234th toward Kingsbridge Av, around back of Unique Thrift. It's shared by several businesses and Garden Gourmet is listed on the sign. (yelp.com/biz_photos/gard…)
Hands down the best grocery store I've been to! This place is amazing – all of the food is super fresh. If I lived close by I'd come here every day. The prepared foods looked amazing too!
This is one of my favorite stops after a hike through Van Cortlandt Park after a friend in the area texts you but claims he's too busy to hang out with you (ahem…).
They have a nice selection of fruits and veggies, as well as prepared foods. It's pricey, but I blame that on Riverdale. I picked up a fruit salad with mandarin oranges that made everyone on the bus mad at me. :]
They also sell S&S Cheesecake! But a warning, it's quite pricey, and since I'm still on this godforsaken diet, I decided it wasn't worth the investment. But you can bet in a few weeks the first thing I will do is get my mouth on a piece of that sweet, sweet glory.
Brotip: Right now they're under construction… so things are a little all over the place.
