octopus, cauliflower, scrambled eggs, and mushroom paella were all standouts. get a reservation or sit in the lounge/bar
I was hoping to see Bobby Flay, we sat near the open kitchen and I made sure to look at the kitchen but didn't see him.
BOBBY, if you read this, please come next time! I want to say hi.
Anyways, you absolutely need reservations. And you might want to book a few weeks in advance and Gato is a very popular spot.
This is what we ordered:
-pizza with lamb sausage: good for sharing. Delicious.
-Gato spreads with pita: delicious. They only gave us 4 mini pitas so we had to ask for more.
-roasted octopus: good
-scrambled eggs: you should order this for sure. It looks like scrambled eggs
-roasted cauliflower: I never thought vegetables could taste this good
-charred beef: omg the most delicious beef ever
-black rice: the rice is actually black but its very good.
For desert, we ordered the chocolate polenta cake. Polenta sounded weird to me. But once I took a bite, I was in love.
Service was ok, our waitress kept winking whenever she was suggesting the popular dishes.
Ugh super disappointed by this place. TEENY TINY portions at crazy prices. I mean, we were 4 girls at our table. One of our orders was of the three spreads which came out with 4 mini pitas. 1 pita each. Are you serious? We continually asked for pita refills and they brought out 2 at a time. THERE ARE 4 PEOPLE AT THE TABLE!!! Have some common sense! Our server was doing his best but English was not his first language and I think he had a hard time understanding us or reading the table when we clearly did not want any interruptions (i.e. at the end of the meal we were still talking and they were scrubbing down the table, which seemed a bit rude). There weren't people standing in line to get in either. We would have been conscious of that fact and not held the table to lose money for the restaurant.
Anyway, we ordered a few dishes for the table but everything was so small that I actually needed to order room service at my hotel to feel like I got a real meal when I got back. I would not recommend this place. You can get more bang for your buck pretty much anywhere else in NYC. And the front staff actually seemed concerned that we didn't have a reservation. Just the whole place didn't handle their clientele very well and was super condescending without any justification. Avoid.
Haven't been mind blown in a while and Gato really did it for me. I've always loved Spanish tapas and had my reservation before trying this place – not the biggest fan of Bobby Flay. Oh man, the food – all of the flavors are so robust and delicious! And it wasn't just the food that was impressive, the service was impeccable and the decor…just love the industrial chic look.
What we ordered:
Eggplant, Eleven layer potato, Stuffer red pepper,Roasted Octopus, Roasted shrimp, Roasted Cauliflower, Porkchop, Saffron linguine, and lastly the Kale and Mushroom Paella. OMG, I die. It was so good.
Counting down the days until I can come back. Can. Not. Wait.
Proudly owned by the renown chef Bobby Flay, Gato was named after an orange cat that has walked by when Bobby was waiting to see his lease location. With more than 100 years of history, the building is now rejuvenated by the fun-Mediterranean cuisine that I was about to try today. Words failed me.
My friend and I arrived just on time and were seated right away. As neither of us was staving, we decided to go light – shared the roasted cauliflower, grilled octopus, as well as the kale/mushroom paella. Food was all of a smaller size so I would recommend to order more plates if hungry. Paella was absolutely the star of the night, as they were able to maintain both the crunchiness of kale and the tenderness of mushroom. There was no meat whatsoever, yet it somehow just hit my taste bud!
Kind of noisy, if you were unlucky enough and seated next to the bar area; however quality of food itself crushed.

I decided to take my bf to Gato for his bday because I had heard rumors that this was Flay's comeback restaurant, i.e. popular for great food and not just the TV star. Unfortunately, I left incredibly disappointed in the food and the service. First, our server did not care about our table at all. He didn't introduce himself, didn't ask if we had been there before/were celebrating anything, just said "tap water?" and left (and this was not a busser, this was our server). He later came by (and I mean LATER) and asked if we were ready. No recommendations, no rundown of the menu, like I said, he did not care about us. Once we got our food, he never asked how it was (probably a good thing because I was ready to share my thoughts, more on that soon). We had to flag him for a check later. I could understand this low level of service at a cheap pizza spot, but not at an expensive, celebrity chef restaurant where we are paying hundreds of dollars to eat.
As for the food, we did the bar snack trio and these were the highlight of the meal. Each bite was tiny, but all were tasty. I especially enjoyed the tuna and the artichoke heart. After that, the food went down hill. We ordered the dip trio and none wowed me, I thought I could get something of similar quality at a grocery store. The pita also tasted store bought (maybe it was?). For my entree, I had the saffron and mussel pasta and I did enjoy the flavor, however, the pasta was offensively overcooked. I mean, the pasta was so mushy no teeth were required for chewing. Also, I found a HAIR in my pasta. I would have mentioned it to the server, but he NEVER came by and at that point, we were so checked out and wanted to leave. My boyfriend's fish also had great flavor but was overcooked (seriously, what was happening in the kitchen) which made it quite dry. What a waste of a great piece of fish. You can bet we didn't stick around for the dessert.
Dear Bobby, if you read this, please ask your serving and cooking staff to step their game up to the level that your name merits (iron chef).
Given my live affair with the Food Network and all its celebrity chefs — I had to try Bobby Flay's new restaurant! First off, when browsing the menu online, I was blown away by the amount of vegetarian option — I have never seen that many in a fine dining restaurant….how refreshing!
A group of 4 friends and I git a reservation about a week in advance and arrived a few minutes late –the hosts were nice about it! Now the decor is very rustic meets old world — I loved the tiling on the floor and the cushioned booths. There is a bar right in the middle of the place and you can see through to the kitchen.
What is even cooler is that Bobby Flay still comes to the restaurant!Unfortunately, I missed him by an hour and was unable to fangirl:'(
Anyway , now to the important part …FOOD:
Since this is a tapas restaurant, we shared all our dishes:
– Pita spreads : yes …yes just order it. I loved the sundried tomato and greek yogurt pesto ones. The pitas are small and there are enough based on the size of the table
– lamb sausage pizza: we had vegetarians at the table and asked for the lamb sausage to the side , to which the restaurant was happy to comply. I absolutely LOVED THIS. The tomato jam vs tomato sauce was great and brought a sweet depth to the pizza…would come back for this alone.
-Kale Paella: wow @ the fact that this exists! Artichokes, kale, egg and rice…very very good buy not as flavorful as I expected. It was a bit too oily as well, just a smidge. Great dish to try because its so different!
– Roasted cauliflower: interesting flavors given it was I. a blueberry caper sauce. I liked it ! However it was not as much of a star as the other dishes
– Potatoes : a pillowy poached egg on top of a need to roasted potatoes…what else could be better? The potatoes had a great seasoning…just a little bit too salty. This is MUST TRY
-Choclate Polenta Cake : I cannot describe this dessert….it was one of the best deserts I have EVER had. I felt like I was in a Ghiradelli ad– I literally clued my eyes and sighed with pleasure after my first bit. You have to try this — the texture is soft, moist and perfectly gritty…the hazelnut ice cream on top is our of this world. Huge kudos on this dish!
– e.Espresso soaked bread pudding: essentially a dense tiramisu. Parked in comparison to the polenta cake but half my table lived this one overt the other dessert. The cream was amazingand it was not too sweet at all.
Overall, great food but the portions were small..the desserts were large which is a plus. Pretty expensive but a great place to go if you're feeling bougie, want to try innovative dishes and want to increase your chances of running into Bobby Flay!
I loved every bite I had at Gato. Unfortunately, everyone I dined with didn't seem to agree. This all had to do with the selection of dishes they chose to eat. I started the night with a light cocktail called the LORENZO with Cucumber, Hendricks Gin, Manzanilla sherry and St. Germain it was delicious!
For appetizers we had the Roasted Octopus, sour orange, bacon, oregano and the Gato Spreads with buckwheat pita: Greek yogurt/charred green chile pesto, Chickpea, meyer lemon/smoked paprika, Whitebean, feta, garlic/walnut-piquillo relish. Both great dishes to start with but nothing super memorable. The chickpea spread with smoked paprika was the best of them all. With a bit of heat and citrus it was a good blend.
The show stopper was my entrée. I went with our waiter's choice of housemade Saffron Linguine, mussels, garlic, parsley. This pasta was to die for!!! The saffron was infused in the perfectly cooked linguine and the mussels were fresh and plentiful in the dish. Garlic and parsley…ya, need I say more?! I'm never one to really gravitate towards a pasta dish but one thing I have learned is that if they tell you the pasta is made in house you should give it a whirl! This was the best decision I could have made. I'm pretty sure there was order envy from those at my table wishing they had gotten what I did.
For dessert we had a scoop of gelato with some complimentary biscotti.
Overall I had a great time. There was a celebrity chef sighting of Scott Conant and the service was impeccable. They were on top of every little thing happening in the restaurant at all times. A definite well oiled machine. The only thing that could have made the night even better would have been if I met Bobby Flay himself!
