  1. Yet another place that I completely disagree with the rave reviews of the place.

Personally I really don't think I'm that picky of a person, I really have no idea why more often than not I disagree with rave reviews of a place on Yelp.

Came here on Valentines day for a nice meal with the Mr. and neither of us were impressed.

First, I must say that I was rather disappointed that they only offered the Valentine's day prix-fix menu on that day. I've browsed through the menu days beforehand to see what I wanted and I walked in with short ribs on my mind. We were only offered the prix-fix menu upon seating and I asked if the full menu was offered and it was not. *sad face*

Being that we were already here, we decided to make the best of it and ordered. He ordered the Gatsby tower and I ordered the Mushroom ravioli as an appetizer. Tower was really more of a duplex but I guess "tower" has a better ring to it. Ravioli had an odd taste. Not sure of the peppercorns were burned or if the brandy wasn't cooked off, but it had a bitter-ish aftertaste.

Entrees were Salmon with Mango salsa for him and the pasta with sausage dish for me. It was ok. The food was room temperature. Not hot, which struck me as odd. Nothing really much else to note here.

Dessert was a cheesecake for him and the molten lava cake for me. Lava it was not. it was more of a ganache consistency. BF noted that the cheesecake was definitely of the frozen variety and tasted a bit freezer burned.

I will say the complimentary champagne was a nice touch and the décor was nice and the fire place added a romantic touch.

I hate to be a negative nelly and rate this establishment so poorly since I like to see local businesses thrive but I was just not impressed.

  2. We really enjoyed this place and are sad we didn't stop in sooner.
We sat on the outdoor patio, they had a nice set of tables outside, candlelight, flowers cute decorations, almost makes you forget you're on Bay St.
Our waiter Dino was really great and friendly.
The asparagus and brie was delicious.
Free glass of wine with a yelp check in!

  3. I've been wanting to go to this place for a while, I read the reviews and it sounded great! So I finally got to try it!

The atmosphere is casual yet classy. The restaurant has a high ceiling which keeps the vibe flowing, yet it still feels intimate. Not overly dim. Last night (Saturday) there was a live jazz trio which added to the ambiance and kept with the roaring 20's theme. There is a fireplace in the back of the room, also.

Our server was Jackie and she was very patient and super nice, I couldn't ask for better service!

I am not going to speak for the entrees that my guests had, but lets just say that their plates were clean at the end. They had the salmon bisque, french onion soup and the duck entree, followed by the chocolate lava cake and espresso.

    What I had:
The mixed seafood risotto. Superb! Baby clams, mussels and shrimp over creamy (but not overly so) asparagus risotto. Out of this world! Loved it! I had to actually slow myself down from eating too fast. It came out steaming and perfectly seasoned. No gritty/sandy shellfish here!
I also had the "Sidecar" cocktail – actually 2. I am not a big brandy fan, but this really did the trick. They don't skimp on the alcohol in their drinks! Perfect!
For dessert, I had the creme brulee and cappuccino. Both delicious, the creme brulee was obviously freshly torched because it was nice and crispy.

I highly recommend giving this place a try, whether for a romantic date, or just something a little different.

  4. My husband brought me here for my birthday dinner and we had a nice time. The decor is nice and the mannequins in the window area are very cute.

We started with drinks, and I fell in love with my cocktail, the bourbon cobbler. This had to have been one of the BEST cocktails I have ever had made for me in my life. The bartender there is PERFECT and I hope they never leave!

We had tuna tartar and a salad for appetizers, they were tasty. My husband got the duck, which he was very happy with. I got the branzino, which was nice, but a little bland. It was on a bed of risotto, which I also found to be bland  – which was disappointing. For dessert we shared the chocolate fondue, which was nice.

I am not sure I'd come back for dinner, but the service was delightful. I will, however, come back for the cocktails – as they were perfect!

  5. Gatsby's offers a very initiate atmosphere. So intimate that's it's like having a conversation with Daisy Buchanan herself. The dim lighting and the guardrails inside the windows give the restaurant an authentic 1920s ambiance.

Let's talk food. For appetizer, I sampled the tuna tartar, the fried calamari, the fried cauliflower, the salmon bisque, the Mac'n'cheese, and the mussels. The presentation of each dish was excellent. Aesthetics are superb here! My favorite was the cauliflower; I really enjoyed the seasoning.

For my main course, I ordered the duck breast. The duck came with a creamy Apple and mushroom glaze over a bed of mashed potatoes and carrots. The slices with crispy skin were the absolute best.

For desert, I split the fried ice cream. It was an outstanding American interpretation of the dish.

The food was great. The staff was extremely courteous and attentive. I'd love to see Gatsby's during the summer with an open patio!

  6. I was looking for a place between New Jersey and Brooklyn to meet up with two old friends, and chose Gatsby's because of its great Yelp reviews.  Yelpers rock!

We picked the ungodly hour of 3:00 p.m. for our meeting.  Since I'm on a Night Owl schedule, this was going to be breakfast for me (!), and dinner for them, and that time coincided with the beginning of the restaurant's dinner hour.  We three all decided to order from the prix fixe menu, a three-course meal for $19.20 (the oddly-priced homage to its 1920's vibe).

Two of us had the pan-fried goat cheese, four small rounds surrounding a nice portion of perfectly cooked pencil-thin asparagus, which were topped with a warm fig chutney.  Delicious!  Our other friend had the risotto cake with prosciutto & mozzarella, topped with
a roasted red pepper pesto, also a hit.

We're boring, but we all ordered the salmon, two pieces of black and white sesame seed crusted filet, served with rice and a yummy stir-fried vegetable melange, with red pepper, crunchy carrot strands, pearl onions, and spinach.  I took half of mine home along with my dessert, knowing that I'd be hungry at my usual 10 p.m. dinner time.

Ah, dessert.  Chocolate lava cake for two of us, creme brulee for the sophisticated, opera-loving lawyer (that would not be me).  I did have the mini-scoop of ice cream that came with the cake, knowing it wouldn't travel well.

I loved the ambiance.  The fireplace was lit, the contemporary jazz music was nice and not intrusive, and the outdoor patio will be lovely if winter ever subsides.  The bathroom is adorable, too, and was clean and well-supplied, even if I couldn't figure out how to work the non-automatic paper towel dispenser.

Best of all was the warm and wonderful service.  From the very beginning, our waiter, whose name I tried so hard to remember that I even asked if he spelled it with an "a" or an "e" – Lindsey?? – was friendly, helpful, and accommodating.  Though we sat for several hours, first over our wines/cocktail, and then their cappuccino and my excellent coffee, we never were given the impression that we overstayed our welcome.

On the contrary, when we finally left, my car was deader than a possum run over by a semi.  My good friends waited with me in the cold as I endured the long wait for road service.  At one point, one went in to tell them that if road service came looking for me, that we were in the back in the parking lot.  I think it was our waiter who offered to try to jump start my car.  When another friend went in a while later to use the bathroom, the staff invited us all to come in out of the cold and have coffee or tea.  Though we didn't avail ourselves of either offer (I was sure the battery wasn't the problem), we are grateful for the caring and concern shown to us.

Though it's a much longer drive for me than my friends, the next time we get together, it will be back at Gatsby's.  Long may it reign.  My only quibble is the name of the restaurant:  WHAT bay?  Oh, I guess they meant to call it Gatsby's on Bay.  Bay Street, that is.

  7. This place was amazing! I walked in and was immediately impressed by the atmosphere. We caught a Lyft to the restaurant. The waitress noticed I was a little cold because of that and immediately seated us by the fire place. I was very appreciative of her attentiveness.

It was our first time here so we were really indecisive. She was very patient with us and even gave us good suggestions.

I ordered the salmon and OH MY GOD it was amazing! cooked perfectly and seasoned so well I almost cried. I also ordered a lemonade and it was freshly made and delicious.

I usually don't order dessert when I go out but I was so impressed with this place I gave it a shot I was not disappointed. The creme Brule was great and it came with fruit so fresh and sweet it could have been a dessert itself.

My only complaint was the menu needs to be extended. I am not a pork eater so the already limited menu was reduced even further. Other than that, there are no negative things I can say about this place.

  8. So I have been wanting to try this place ever since it opened.  It has a great reputation on the island.  My friend was coming from Brooklyn but I convinced her to try a new spot for our monthly dinners where we catch up.  It was hard for her to get there for 7, as the price fixe on their site advertised, but she assured me she would.  I called and asked what's the latest we can take a reservation to make their price fixe that ends at 7. The man on the other end said 6:30.  I reminded him that their website advertises 7.  So he said the best he could do was 6:45.  Already turned off I told my friend the details.  She rushed there and made it for 6:30.  The place was completely empty.  This upsets me because I like to eat out and the man on the phone almost lost what could be a new loyal customer.  Why wouldn't he encourage us on a dead night?  Right there he lost one star and I will tell my friends about the experience so they don't cut it too close and miss out on trying the price fixe to see if they like the place.  From there I started the night with a poor attitude and almost annoyed we agreed to spend our evening in a spot that seemed to prefer no business over a customer just making the price fixe deal they advertise on their site.  I wouldn't have gone except now my friend seemed excited because I hyped the place up prior to calling for the reservation.  I put on my best face and we ordered.  We split the goat cheese and risotto appetizer.  Both were delicious!!  The goat cheese blended well with the fig.  The risotto tasted great too blended with the meat and cheese.  We agreed we'd order those both again.  I got the sesame salmon with rice and vegetables.  It was good but I'd prefer less pepper and it was a bit too spicy.  Based on a friends recommendation, we shared the truffle mac and cheese. I liked it but it needed more cheese and truffle. I wouldn't order it again.  For dessert I had the lava cake.  It was delicious!  The drink was $12 which is a bit steep for the island. Their drink menu was adorable, but a bit tacky that they would sell the menu for $12.  There was a live pianist. He was wonderful.  Our waitress was attentive and knowledgable.  She did a great job and definitely turned my negative feeling about the place around.  Overall I would return and suggest my friends do also.  I just hope the man on the phone doesn't turn other customers away that could be potential repeat customers.  It's in a quiet location and being a newer spot, they need the business to establish themselves. This place is a solid 4 stars.
