I really like this place…it's been consistently good and it's a great for a mid-week or Sunday evening meal. The sushi is always so fresh… no residual fishy smell or taste like some sushi places. I also like the fact that they have Chinese food as well because sometimes I just like to have a couple of sushi rolls as an appetizer and then a Chinese entree. Was there recently for the All-you-can eat deal… we thought it may have been a little pricey but then decided that it is actually great value for money because of the wide selection of rolls, sushi, sashimi and appetizers that are on that menu.Their spring rolls, dumplings, seaweed salad, kani salad, and spider rolls are among a few of my favorites.
Barely 3 stars on this… I'm going back and forth with 2.5 as I write this.
We went here on a Weds night – only about 5 other tables were there. We went with the AYCE option… the flimsy limited menu was a disappointing choice in the face of the great options at Sushi X just a few blocks away.
Soup options – hot and sour, miso and chicken wonton. The chicken wonton and miso were not bad (didn't try the hot and sour).
Salads – spicy kani, house, and seaweed. The seaweed salad was pretty good if lacking slightly in spice, and the house salad was average (didn't try the kani).
Appetizers – there were 6 I think – we tried a few. The spring rolls were just tasteless and pointless. The BBQ ribs were not much better. The veggie gyoza were okay, but the regular gyoza were my favorite thing on the menu. Opinions on the shumai (I could not partake) were that it was just okay as well.
Sushi – lackluster and unimpressive, but nothing bad.
Service – good – much better than Sushi X (granted, there were far fewer patrons as well).
Bonus – they have mochi ice cream! That was the deciding factor between the 2.5 and 3 stars.
In sum, I wouldn't go back here by choice, but I wouldn't protest too strongly if someone really wanted to go.
During my three week stay in Jersey, I've been ordering dinner from here and it made me realize how much I miss the nyc japanese cafes. The sushi and sashimi wasn't too bad except I got disappointed during one instance when the "udon noodle" on the menu turned out to be 'stir-fried' noodle. I was really craving udon noodle soup at the time. The miso soup also tasted nothing like a miso soup…(maybe that's why it was free..) On the bright side, the price was very reasonable for the amount of portion you get in the take-out. I would recommend this place if you're working late but want to have a healthy dinner.
I went here several years ago with my family and we had a few dishes with the most notable being a really bad steak habachi while the rest of the food reminded me of Mei Sushi though a bit more pricey and with nicer plates.
Fast forward to today and I got bored of the usual dinner options. I ordered Chirashi from here which came with a shrimp, 2 Kani/fake crab, 3 scallop, 3 tuna, 3 of another fish that I can't remember the name, and 3 of tuna.
Of the group, I found the salmon to be the tastiest followed by the scallops. The tuna was probably the least good, mostly due to it not having a super appealing color. Glad I didn't get a tekkadon or something similar.
Nice staff. Food is OK though overpriced for quality. There isn't much good sushi in Ridgewood or the surrounding area so yeah there is that.
2.8. I'd give this a 2.5 if I could.
The bland sushi would normally have earned a 2-star review, but the servers messing up the order and barely knowing what we were saying drop it to 1-star. They offered to get the correct roll afterwards, but we'd have to wait, when we declined and didn't eat the incorrect roll, they charged the normal amount like they weren't the ones who were wrong!
Really, there isn't anything nice to say about this place except that the sushi was just tasteless and didn't taste terrible. Sadly that's the best I could come up with.
Avoid this place.
The service is the best part of this place, very good and attentive. My vegetable spring rolls were ok and the spicy tuna girl roll was good, basic, not a place to go out of your way to get to but fine for a dinner if you live in the area with decent pricing.
