I am so sorry to say that I didn't like the pulled pork sandwich at all… Like not at all 🙁 I am a huge meat fan, but this one had nothing particularly awesome to it. It wasn't rotten, and that was all, really. I am sorry, I really wanted to love it, there isn't anything that yummy about it, it was pretty plain and I am pretty sure it can be easily done better.
However, I loved the peppery bbq sauce; I loved the French fries; I loved the coleslaw; I loved our host – him and his mustache; I love the hole in the wall that this place is; I can't give more than 3 stars though, it's a meat and bbq place and I didn't even finish my sandwich…
The sauce they used on the bbq chicken platter was excellent. The portion was big for both the meat and the sides. The leg and thigh were just a little undercooked and the breast was just a little overcooked. The cole slaw was a little bland but good because there wasn't an overuse of mayo. The baked beans were excellent and the best that I have had in NYC. I have noticed (being that I have traveled and extensively lived in the south) that most bbq places in nyc such as mighty quinns, dallas bbq, or hill country make the beans savory without the sweet flavor. Well, real southern bbq beans have a sweet taste and an extra soft texture. This is the only place in nyc that got it right. The sausage was also very tasty. I will order from here again.
I ordered delivery from Georgia's through UberEats (so thanks for being available through that app). I ordered the fried chicken (dark meat) & ribs entree. It comes with two sides, and I chose the baked beans and the collard greens. I also ordered the spicy wings and the banana pudding side for dessert. This cost about $40ish dollars.
The fried chicken was cooked perfectly… but it did not taste that good! The breading was good, but it could have used some salt.
The ribs were tender and the meat was falling off of the bone, but was a little too charred for my taste. A little extra sauce on the ribs would have easily remedied this.
The baked beans were GREAT. Will order again.
The collard greens were too sweet. I chopped up a piece of bacon and dabbed hot sauce on it to give it a more savory taste.
And the banana pudding was good. No complaints with this yummy dessert.
The wings… were not good. They were a tiny bit under cooked.
Overall, this experience was just okay. I would definitely recommend the ribs (with some extra sauce on the side) and the baked beans.
4 stars for delicious potato salad and corn bread! Brisket oh so disappointing, not smoked. Their bbq sauce also leaves a lot to desire!
I wouldn't mind trying more things but this would be a risky move… The review is for things above, however, the way brisket is done gives you an idea about the whole BBQ joint.
Legit. For some reason I've had the hardest time trying to find baby back ribs in this city, and I have finally found them here with an AMAZING BBQ sauce. This place is a tiny little spot that is far from glamorous, but thats what makes it more legit as well. My hubs and I had been craving for some good southern ribs, and this place cured our craving. I have no idea how this place doesn't have higher than 3 stars, because it damn well should!
Yum!!
Ordered off UberEats and was really a delicious meal. The breading on the fried chicken is to die for. And the ribs, while not fall off the bone, are tangy, very meaty and delicious.
With two sides, potato salad and collard greens, it was a $22 combo platter. Not bad for the heaping pile of meat that showed up at my door 45 minutes later. Succulence!
All in all this is the kind of splurge place I would go for delivery. Worth a shot, although I'll skip the collard greens next time.
This is more of a 3.5 star rating. Got here an hour before closing time on a Friday, and was happy to see that nothing was sold out or taken off menu. Friendly lady let me take my time deciding what I wanted.
Settled on the fried Chicken plate ($15) with cornbread and potato salad. Three heavily breaded pieces of hot chicken that wasn't too greasy to hold. Juicy meat on the inside but the breading is very very salty. I wanted to add hot sauce but that wasn't going to solve much of the saltiness issue so I balanced it out with the sweet-tasting potato salad. Cornbread is your standard fare.
Love the service and price-to-food ratio (hence the cash only). The meal itself though was only okay. Might come back to try a different dish if not crowded.
3.5, which I wanted to round up because of an awesome server, and really accommodating kitchen/chef….but rounded down because they're lacking in consistency and overall execution.
Cute little unassuming place with about three small and two medium tables, a wee a/c by the front table, and tons of foot traffic for pick up and delivery.
Tried a BlackBoardEats voucher for AYCE fried chicken, catfish, or ribs, plus two sides for $25. The server saw it, and asked about it before I had to say anything. She wrote the number down, and we were good to go!
The voucher said no substitutions, but I had called ahead to see if they do gluten-free options. They allow a voucher substitution of ribs with their vinegar-based sauce. When my friend dropped that she also doesn't eat pork or beef….the kitchen allowed and whipped up VERY tasty blackened grilled chicken, and there were three or four side options for her!
That blackened grilled chicken won the protein category by far! Juicy, tender, awesome blackening seasoning, lovely vinegar bbq sauce….superb!
Runner up was my fried catfish. They know how to soak that thang in buttermilk just right; didn't taste all muddy and bottom dweller like some folks catfish. Awesomely crisp cornmeal seasoning. Had I just done the one order, I think I would want to go back for more. I did a "refill", and the batter/soak/something just got cloyingly salty. Couldn't tell if it was just a build up…or the batter just wasn't blended well. I might try again on a sandwich, because they do have a crack-based spicy remoulade they serve on the side!
Last place was clearly the fried chicken. The first batch of fried chicken looked too dark when it was set down. Was a little tough, and tasted of either old oil or fried too long. Second batch looked perfect, and my friend said tasted much better….but I wasn't up to trying it again.
Second round of grilled chicken was equally perfect.
Cornbread was BOMB! Mac & Cheese was fine….but I've made equally good stuff from a box….and it needed salt and pepper to bring out any flavor. Collards were interesting….dry yet wet at the same time….needed plenty of hot sauce….my friend didn't finish her pickled beets, but loved the potato salad. Overall, most of the sides felt rather small and unflavored for the price tag. The Southern Tea with Bourbon, however, was AWESOME! Heavy pour, and not too sweet on the tea.
Glad I finally got to check them off the bucket list. I'd go again if in the area to try their ribs….def the cornbread….and maybe some other sides. But I wouldn't make this a destination spot for anyone who really knows they're bbq…or is a whore for sides, like me. Too many non-chain options throughout the city who nail bbq and sides for the same or not that much more dinero.
