Yayyy finally somewhere to hang out in New Rochelle! I've been to this place twice in past few weeks once for brunch and once for a little late night partying with my boyfriend & i've got to say i really like this place. I wasn't a big fan of Don Coqui because most of the menu was friend and i don't like fried food. If I came it was probably for drinks during happy hour but thats it. As for Get Soul their brunch is buffet style with lots of food to choose from. It also comes with unlimited mimosas for $40 & whats brunch without unlimited mimosas 🙂 Its definitely like a party & can be a bit loud so if you want to go somewhere thats quiet with no music then don't come here for brunch. I don't remember what all i ate but everything i put on my plate was good. They also serve hookah which I love! As for the night party.. Coat check is mandatory and guys can't wear hats. It gets pretty packed at night. The DJ was ok I think she could've played more current music but other than that I had fun. More hookah and drinks! Glad New Rochelle finally has somewhere to go instead of traveling to Manhattan all the time.
Since my friend is from Connecticut and I am from New Jersey, we decided to meet up somewhere in the middle. We came across Get Soul. The menu seemed interesting as it seems to be of Latin cuisine with a soulful flare.
We came around 6 ish for dinner and was immediately seated by the sweetest manager, Miguel. One thing I like about the place is the attention to details. We had a 6 year old with us and so the bartender brought over crayons and a paper with drawings over.
Complimentary corn bread and cheese biscuits were brought over to our table immediately. The cornbread were warm and soft which I really enjoyed but the biscuits were super dry. They could've done without the biscuits. We ordered the Hennessy wings to start. This was the best wings ever! I'm not sure how this was made but it was drizzled with a sweet and sticky sauce. I ordered the oxtail with pigeon peas rice as an entree. Wow! The oxtail was tender and flavorful. I loved that they gave extra gravy for the rice. For dessert, we had this pie ala mode. I think it was guava. It was the perfect texture. The dessert wasn't to sweet as the ice cream balanced the sweetness and tartness. I do think they should give more than a baby scoop of ice cream. Also, I recommend for cocktail- the coquitini. It's pretty heavy and creamy with real toasted coconut flakes as a garnish. It's a good drink if you want to skip the dessert. I also recommend the frozen sangria. The frozen sangria is a blend of red sangria and frozen margarita. It's really refreshing.
Over all, I loved our server/bartender Lori. She's super sweet and attentive. There's free valet. The place itself is spacious. There's a banquet style room downstairs. There's tons of televisions so you're able to enjoy games and what not. There's also a night life during Friday's and Saturdays after dinner.
I've been to Don Coqui here about four times and this was my first time going to Get Soul. Honestly I don't see much of a difference between the two restaurants. I liked Don Coqui and I like Get Soul.
The layout is exactly the same as before – the only difference that I noticed was that there a few "southern" meal options on the menu. My family and I went for my son's birthday. My daughter had previously been to Get Soul for their Sunday brunch and after reading some no-so-nice comments here on Yelp I was hesitant to go, but our food was good and plentiful.
It was Karaoke night and it was pretty enjoyable to watch people get up and sing plus the songs that were played was good so the restaurant had a good vibe going that night.
We started off with drinks and after some confusion on the waitress part about my son's drink we finally got them and they were alright. I ordered a frozen margarita and it was a typical frozen drink that you get at a restaurant – it was more like drinking an icee but I'm getting used to not having liquor in my drinks – lol! Water was brought to the table and I had to ask our waitress about three times for straws. While she didn't seem to have an attitude, she appeared to not really be into her job as I don't recall her coming back to check on us – but when we received our check her tip was included (and we were only a party of four).
I ordered the shrimp Mofongo. This was the first time that I've ever had it and it was good but I don't have anything to compare it to. My daughter ordered the fried chicken and she got four nice size pieces with mac and cheese which wasn't so good and candied yams. My son ordered the full slab of ribs and my goodness did he get a plate full of ribs. It was definitely enough to take home. The ribs only come with one side (which I can't figure out why) and he ordered the mac and cheese too but didn't care for it. My daughter in law ordered the ox tails with mac and cheese and the black eye peas. The ox tails were plentiful, nicely seasoned, but a little tough. She enjoyed the black eye peas, but the consensus at the table was the mac and cheese needed some work.
I did ask the waitress to bring out a small cake and candle for my son which she did and we sang happy birthday so I was glad that she got that part right.
All in all it wasn't a bad evening and I would go back there again.
