PROS:
– Moscato d' Asti $9 a glass – I liked that it wasn't super sweet compared to the other ones I had before.
– Calamari was fresh and delicious too.
-Tagliatelle Tirolesi – speck, mushroom, cream, parmigiano. This was nice and creamy. I liked it.
– Cheese Plate was good. I only liked 2 of the cheeses from the cheese plate and those were very good. The blue cheese was too strong and it was a turn off.
CONS:
– Rigatoni all' amatriciana – homemade rigatoni with fresh tomato sauce, parmigiana, and red pepper – this dish was too thick and I got tired of the flavor pretty fast.
During the nearly five years in NYC, my wife and I ate our way across the city. From lower to upper Manhattan, through Queens out to Flushing, down through Brooklyn, and up to the Bronx and down to Staten Island, we love food. Upon moving out of the city, this was one of two restaurants it truly made me sad to leave.
We found Giano in early 2015 on a lark, browsing through Groupon or some similar site, and decided that a discounted bottle of wine and pasta couldn't be THAT bad, could it? Little did I know it was going to be the best pasta we've had outside of Italy (a country we have been to a lot, combined), and a damn near weekly venture for a year.
We've had the chance to have basically all the pasta. It's always cooked perfectly al dente. Never once has the pasta been overcooked or undercooked by even a minute. I don't even know how that's possible. You won't go wrong with a pasta here. Some of my favorites are the Spaghetti alla Gricia (featuring truffle oil but not being too heavy), the Bigoli with lamb ragout, and the Tagliatelle Tirolesi (a cream-based comfort pasta that will put you to sleep). World-class pasta at a shocking $20 and under price – in lower Manhattan!
The appetizers are delightful too. The caprese has amazing mozzarella, and if they're offering the burrata appetizer, you won't find better cheese on the island. The perfect for winter asparagus appetizer with melted cheese and prosciutto is decadent and delicious. The desserts are classic but hit the spot – the Tiramisu (amusingly billed as a "top 5 in North America") is fantastic and the amaretto cheesecake is divine.
This is all to say nothing of the service and the staff. The owner, Paolo, is frequently your waiter here. He's an Italian gentleman who comes across as so friendly in the beginning it's a bit jarring. You can tell he cares deeply about the restaurant and the food here, making sure everyone has a good time and is enjoying their food.
Our last meal in NYC, literally the night before the moving truck came, was here. We had amazing food and great wine and conversation. Paolo brought us a tiramisu on the house and some more wine long after the last guests had left. It was only fitting that a little restaurant that found its way into our hearts and had an owner that made such a connection with us was our last dinner in NYC.
We already have a reservation for June for our first trip back from DC. This place is perfect.
This place right here is the perfect Edmond what makes NYC great. With the thousands of restaurants in the city, you can still come across a gem like Giano that you've probably walked a million times and never realized.
I came here for dinner and had some best Italian food I've had in a long time. Located in East Village, Giano has a small bar, a decent sized inside, and an awesome outside patio that holds a good amount of seating. I opted for the outside patio
I had he spaghetti Pomodoro, a salad and tasted the lasagna and ravioli. The spaghetti was perfect. Sauce was delicious and the pasta was as well. Handmade maybe? I'm not sure, but it was definitely one of the best spaghetti dishes I've had.
I then had a little bit of the lasagna which was unbelievable. Definitely different than any lasagna dish I've ever had and delicious from the first bite. I also had a little bit of the ravioli special special which was delicious. Notice the trend? Everything here was excellent and seemed to reflect quality time put into making of the food.
This place is an absolute gem and one that I'll definitely be coming back to. Authentic Italian food is hard to find, but it's here.
I enjoy cooking pasta so I rarely go out to an Italian restaurant but Giano was so worth it! The service is very down to earth & friendly. Our server was very detailed, a great listener who gave us excellent suggestions. The food was very fresh and tasty.
The restaurant is modern and homely at the same time. I finally have a go to Italian spot in the city!
Amazing homemade pasta with Pomodoro sauce. My husband had the rigatoni special with fava beans and speck. Delicious food and this is a great neighborhood hangout.
The most interesting part of this meal was our server, Paulo. He was super high energy and added a dimension of Italian authenticity to the meal. We started with a great burrata, arugula, and meat dish. The server recommended this and we were really happy with this. My girlfriend has a dish with pasta and panchetta, and a super rich buttery sauce. It was really really good. I perhaps erred with my order, because I got something that was not on the menu. I had ravioli stuffed with cheese in a parmesan sauce, covered in a balsamic drizzle. It wasn't bad per say, but all it was to me was adult mac and cheese. Did not taste like good rich Italian food, but I'll take the blame for that and not fault the restaurant. I think the dishes they offer on the menu are really well done.
In terms of wine, we are big fans of the Gavi, and they Gavi they have on the wine menu is fantastic, and you will not be disappointed. Perfect acidity, perfect smoothness, and perfect viscosity.
Many of the ingredients here are not only fresh, but fresh from Italy. This is a really good small Italian restaurant and wine bar that is definitely quite modern, but serves many dishes with great ingredients and authentic tastes.
Came here with the fiance after a search on Yelp for something good. We decided to make a quick reservation (and then show up too early), but they still seated us. We both decided on the prix fixe menu that included an appetizer and an entree for $25 pp. We read rave reviews about the Tagliatelle Tirolesi (which was included as one of the 3 choices for prix fixe) so we both decided to get that, though he got it without the prosciutto. For our appetizers, we got the fried raviolis which was the only choice not on the regular appetizer menu.
The food was delicious! The raviolis has an amazing marinara dipping sauce that added wonderful flavor to the crispy ricotta filled raviolis. Yum! The bread and olive oil was also very good – so chewy and delicious. Then the main dishes came… It was some of the best I've ever tasted! It actually reminded me of pasta we had in Italy 🙂 The pasta is homemade here and the Tagliatelle Tirolesi was a deliciously creamy sauce with juicy mushrooms and wonderful saltiness from the prosciutto (i love salty!). It was all fantastic! I also did the taboo thing of ordering moscato at the beginning of our meal – it's a dessert wine, but it tastes like candy! I haven't had good luck with moscato or moscato d'asti at other places and was too excited that this one was so good! We also got the tiramisu for dessert (even though we were completely stuffed at the heaping portions) and it was also very good! It was a little too much cocoa powder on top for us, but we just brushed some of it away and it was fantastic!
Staff was cordial, but nothing that I thought stood out. Not too much smiling or talking, but that didn't take away from the experience and they were attentive with things like water and removing dishes.
Overall, I had a wonderful meal here and would COMPLETELY recommend this place to everyone! We'll definitely be back! =)
I went to Giano for dinner and LOVED it!
The atmosphere is great- there is both indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor has a nice mix of dimly lit romantic tables toward the back, and brighter, more casual seating in front. The outdoor garden seating is lovely on a nice day.
The food was amazing. The tomato sauce here is great, and it translates well into every dish. I started with the eggplant parmesan appetizer and it was absolutely delicious. For the main dish, I ordered the rigatoni. Again, the pasta was wonderfully cooked (al dente) and the sauce get it amazing flavor with just a hint of spice from the red pepper flakes.
There is a great selection of wines and even two Italian beers available.
The owner is super friendly. He will make you feel at home in his restaurant. A little part of me felt like I was in Italy!
