  1. From the Main Street side you would not know this was a major Farmers market, housing a produce, seafood, meat, dairy and flower shop in a large building.  There is plenty of parking on the back on Riverside Avenue and from there you can see many outdoor bins with fruits, vegetables and flowers even before you go inside.  I come here because the fish market is excellent, always has fresh fish and shrimps in many verities.

  2. I usually go to the farmers market on 17 by BJs, but since this one is right by my doctors office, I figured I'd give it a shot. I liked it. They had a huge variety at very reasonable prices. Some items were of better quality than others, but I find that is true of pretty much any produce market. It really depends on the luck of your timing.

As to the cleanliness issue others spoke of…it's a produce market people, not a Whole Foods. If you want clean and pretty, go to Fairway or Whole Foods and pay their prices.

If you want decent produce at good prices, I do recommend Giant Market.

  3. Despite the proximity of Cotsco, Total Wine, and dozens of malls in the area, Giant is for sure one of my favorite places to shop in northern NJ. Every time I come here, I load up a giant cart or basket full of fresh produce, and I am always sticker shocked in the BEST WAY when I see how diminutive my receipt total is.

Giant stocks all the standard produce you're looking for, with a seasonal focus and occasional smattering of something more exotic. Yesterday, I spotted mangosteens (these were unfortunately outrageously expensive at 2 for $4), quenepa, dragon fruit, rambutan, and lychees, in addition to the bounty of summer fruits and vegetable on deep sale. We're talking 5 pints of blueberries for $5! Broccoli rabe for 99¢ a pound! All the leafy greens and grilling vegetables and NJ ripe tomatoes you could ever want! Yes, this stuff isn't organic — but it's usually fresh and delicious.

Some weird things that I've found here: Vosges chocolates for $5 a bar (huge discount), Bonne Maman preserves for $3/jar (cheap!), and McClure's pickles for $4/jar (ditto)… they also usually have a good selection of Kinder chocolates from Germany. So don't forget to hunt around for the dry goods, too.

I don't usually get meat or fish here but I've noticed that it's very competitively priced. And, the cashiers are always lightning fast and deadly accurate. I love Giant!

  4. Terrific produce and meat selections at a great price.  I do my shopping here whenever possible.  I brought my mother here, and she was like a kid in a candy store!

I agree with Cynthia that it doesn't feel "clean," but it's a farmer's market.  The deli, meat and fish counters seem very clean, everyone uses gloves, etc.  The produce will have to be washed when you get home, but that's normal.  They have selections you can't find anywhere else in the area, and certainly not for the prices they have.  The deli also has freshly made salads, sandwiches to order, and some of the best mozzarella and pickles I've ever had (not to be eaten together).  I've had some of the freshest meats and veggies from here, and can't wait to try the fish when I have the time to cook it that day.  There are also a lot of "ethnic" selections that you often can't find at local stores.

They have eggs, milk, butter, yogurt etc., most of which is about $1 less than I've found in any of the area supermarkets.

Don't go for the packaged foods (cans, etc.) – they're more expensive than other places.  However, if you need to grab one or two things while you're shopping, it's really handy.

Warning about the parking lot – you will be taking your life in your hands.  Park farther away from the door if possible, as you'll have a much better chance of not plowing someone down who walks directly behind your car while you're reversing…

Make sure you check out the floral section if you're looking for a gift or just fresh flowers.  They're absolutely gorgeous.

You're better off going during the week if possible… otherwise you will be fighting the crowds.  The checkers are incredibly efficient so the lines move fairly quickly.

  5. Cheapest produce around. Busy on the weekend – otherwise no complaints. I get my fish there (fresh) and turkey. The vegetables and fruits are also good quality, especially for the cost. Convenient too.

  6. Okay so at first glance you are like "Huh? What is this place?" its kind of dingy but offers many unique things. You honestly can't beat the fresh sandwiches that they make at the deli. The offer specials for $5 and $6 sandwich includes either a hero sandwich or roll and includes either a soda or pasta salad. There is also a meat department, fish department and produce section. I have compared prices around and the produce is very decently priced compared to most places. I have eaten lunch from there almost every day for the last 2 months and I am always happy and full.

  7. Been coming here for years. Though I had already been in the area for about 4 yrs or so before I realized that this place was the place to go for regularly weekly groceries.

Usually well stocked with all the basics, plenty of fruit/veggies options. The salad section & stock has improved over time. Sat/Sun can get rather crazy busy, so I try to go on week nights. Has a deli & a separate fish & meats section too. I usually get everything here except for meat.

The prices are way better than other 'bigger' grocery stores. I think I spend less than half of what I would at a big grocery chain. They have a flower section too.

It's a basic-no frills grocery store & the best value for your money.

  8. New lesson learnt. Never ever ever buying my meats here. Completely cooked and ready to eat chicken had blood running from it. The temperature was pretty accurate, I even tested it. So gross. I might just be a vegetarian here after.
