I probably should give it a 1 but I'm feeling generous … I had vegetable dumplings, Cantonese shrimp wonton soup and Szechuan dumplings … Everything tasted terrible. The soup broth had an old kitchen stench to it.. There was soooo much noodle and like half a pint of soup and it just didn't work for me.
I also asked for hot chili oil on the side and they did not accommodate that… Which made it worse because the chili oil would have saved these terrible tasting dishes.
So disappointed. Should have known than to order from a place in midtown with a handful or reviews and mediocre ones at that…
Lesson.learned.
Ginger's is a restaurant located in the DoubleTree Hotel Times Square. Hilton Gold members are treated to a complimentary breakfast buffet here, which would otherwise cost you about $30.
It is your basic selection for a breakfast buffet which includes all the breakfast meats like bacon, sausage, and ….gasp…. corn beef hash. There is even an omelette-made-to-order area. There are no other frills unless you count fruits, bagels and cereals as one.
Benny was my primary server and he is my primary reason for giving this place a +1 star. Otherwise, this place is pretty pricey with a basic food-fare. I asked Benny's advice for some NY stuff and he didn't know. 10 minutes later, he would have asked all the employees around and came back with an answer. 4 stars for great, friendly customer service.
It only exists because Doubletree guests get a free breakfast buffet. But it really was pretty standard hotel breakfast fare, and would not ever be worth paying $30 a head for.
With little expectation, we came to this non-descript yet impeccably clean cafe hidden on a quiet floor in our hotel. It was 11:00am and my 5 year old son who only likes breakfast foods was starting to run out of options in town as most places we like we're starting lunch service.
Immediately we were seated and given coffee and juice. The choices were $19.99 for a continental buffet, $30+ for a hot buffet and a la carte options. My husband and I went for the continental buffet while the hostess explained my son would dine free if we opted for the buffet.
My son, the picky eater he is, decided he wanted pancakes and didn't see any on the buffet. His pouting began. Shortly thereafter, a very lovely woman who was clearly a manager of some sort started conversing with my little boy. Once she learned what he was eating vs what he wanted to eat, she took him by the hand and brought him over right to the head chef. She let him order pancakes just the way he likes them (chocolate chips, whipped cream on the side) after first checking with me on any allergies (wow) and then proceeded to sit with him near the kitchen asking how he was enjoying his trip so far and making him feel super special. Once his breakfast came out, to my son's delight, they were Mickey Mouse shaped and came with a HUGE bowl of whipped cream just for him! He then happily proclaimed it was the best breakfast he ever had.
All the "grown up" food was fresh and clean. Tazo tea, croissant, fruit, it was perfect. When it was time for the breakfast buffet to close, our server made sure we got everything we wanted before they started wrapping up, which was appreciated.
After settling the bill, we asked to speak with Hilda to thank her again for her hospitality. Turns out, she's not a restaurant supervisor but rather the GM of the Doubletree Hotel!! This woman took time from her busy day to make rounds at the restaurant and make sure all her guests, big and small, were happy. She made my son feel special. Class act and she clearly trains her staff well as everyone we have encountered here at the hotel and restaurant have been top notch.
Thank you Hilda and staff!
Best,
Jamie E.
