“Have had both the Hibachi and a la carte sashimi.”

“The chefs don't always seem to put that much effort into the show when there is not a full table or kids around, but it still always fun and tasty.”

  1. I've been to Ginza twice now – once just recently and once a few years ago. Both experiences were… okay. Nothing was spectacular, but nothing was awful either – just very middle of the road both in service and the food.

Most recently, I was there with a girlfriend of mine for lunch during the week. We knew we had limited time becase we both had to get back to work, so sushi seemed like a good but quick option. The restaurant itself is nestled in a small area of Passaic Avenue. There is ample parking on front of, next to, and behind the small building. When I went there for lunch on a Thursday, it was surprisingly empty. I don't know if it's busier here during dinner, but there were only one or two other cars in the lot at 12:05pm.

I walked in and my friend had already gotten us a booth near the back. We quickly decided on some rolls and set to work enjoying our tea. A few minutes later, we were presented with our soup and salad, both devoured as quickly as they appeared on our table. Neither was truly memorable, but there was nothing offensive about them either Next our rolls were brought out to us on one of those boat things – very nice touch since we ordered 6 rolls total. The server even brought out a really cool cucumber roll with a citrus sauce compliments of the chef. I can't remember all the rolls we ordered, but I can say that the shrimp tempura roll was delicious. We had tuna and California rolls as well. I vaguely remember one of the rolls having scallops, but it's hard to remember since I didn't do the ordering.

Unfortunately, my friend got called back into work before we could get through most of our sushi. I ended up taking it back to the office with me, spending the rest of the day enjoying the rest of the meal in my cubicle. The rolls were all packed up for me in a white take-out box with extra soy sauce and chopsticks, to boot.

While Ginza is certainly not my "go to" spot for sushi, I'm not going to vehemently object to going there. The food was okay, the service was prompt, and the prices were very reasonable.

  2. When FI moved to Jersey, this was our go-to place for a while. First visit, we even received a roll of sushi, compliments of the chef. They offer plenty of vegetarian options and FI loves the steak hibachi, which he orders rare and man, is it rare!

Each consecutive visit has been pretty consistent. Immediate greeting, seating at a booth away from the noisy hibachi tables, delicious food, mostly attentive service and to-go boxes to enjoy our leftovers later (there was only one time I did not have leftovers–must have been hungry!) Good prices and good food!

Our last visit was disappointing, though. We usually have the same female server, who's sweet and makes the same cute "oh, very bloody!" joke when FI orders his steak "as rare as possible." The food was great as always, but the service was unusually slow. While we waited for drink refills, we tried to wave to our server, who was sitting at the bar. Another man eventually stopped over to collect dishes and see if we wanted anything else. We asked why our server wasn't coming over to ask us herself, to which he replied that she was busy. Too busy to do her job? We could CLEARLY see her sitting at the bar chatting with some other people, which she had been doing for a good ten minutes.

Fuming, we left and never came back. FI agreed to getting takeout if I really wanted it, but I feel like they are not interested in having us as customers in any capacity. It may have been a fluke, but as they say, it takes years to make a loyal customer, and only one experience to lose one forever.

  3. I guess where Ginza set up shop is helpful. There's not too many Japanese restaurants in the area.

Even so… Food is okay at best. Sushi quality is mediocre and bland. I haven't tried the hibachi, but I can only imagine it'll be close to average. I think that the combination lunch boxes might be the best bang for your buck here. They range from 12-15 dollars and the prices double during dinner hours. These include your choice of meat (chicken, beef, shrimp, salmon, scallop teriyaki style), gyoza, spring rolls, California sushi roll, rice, and an assortment of tempura (shrimp and veggies).

However, service is impeccable. Our server was very attentive and accommodating. He was constantly on the lookout to refill our beverages and take away any emptied dishware.

Overall, I would only recommend Ginza during the lunch hours and specifically for the combination boxes.
