Simply put, DISGUSTING! The food, and the customer service.
My cousin ordered mac n cheese, callaloo, and shrimp. The young lady with the black smokers lips served her all these items mixed up…literally. The mac n cheese was below, and the rest of the food was piled on top. Same with the mashed yams, callaloo and soya chunks. It was a mess! When we tried to change it, she said that there's nothing she can do about it, that we should have asked for it separate.
This is common knowledge that you don't mix peoples food. Either that, or you tell them how their food comes. Allow them to make the decision. The person ordering the food has never ordered from Gloria's, and isn't even from here. For her first time, it was HORRID! Nasty NASTY NASTY attitudes, and nasty customer service. The owners need to pay closer attention to whom they have working for them, because these are the same low standard of people who cause businesses to fail.
Gloria's is a great choice if you are in the mood for roti. They have a good selection of different types with both boneless and bone-in options. They even have pumpkin roti which I had never even heard of before so at least they are getting creative with the menu rather than just the usual standards or limited options at other restaurants. The fact that they are available on grubhub is also a plus.
I placed an order online and went to pick-up. I had the shrimp roti and my family ordered the stew chicken roti, and boneless chicken roti, and some doubles. We all has a taste of each others food so I am able to comment on all the items.
The doubles were good but a tad on the sweet side. The shrimp roti was also good and was really packed with filling. The conistency of the roti was slightly different than the fluffier Trinidad style ones that I am used to in Ozone Park but still good nonetheless even if a little chewier. The size of the shrimp was probably medium to large as they shrink upon cooking. The potatoes were seasoned well. My son enjoyed his strew chicken but there were a lot of small bones so picking them all out as he was eating was slightly annoying but the filling was extra saucy. My husband was happy with his boneless chicken with channa. The portion sizes exceeded our expectations.
The restaurant was definitely in the christmas spirit as well. They had their own tree and were playing holiday music. The overall transaction was quick and smooth and took less than five minutes. We are definitely satisfied and will return.
I've lived in Brooklyn for two weeks and I've eaten at Gloria's four times…does that give you any indication of how I feel about it?
Yes, it's on my corner…but also there are a million other Caribbean spots a stone's throw away and I don't feel the need to branch out…at least not yet (except for maybe the islands which has been way too crowded for me to check out every time I've visited so far)
Short Ribs – Out of this world. Savory, soft, and falling off the bone.
Curry Goat – Meaty and spicy and delicious. My favorite thing to order as an entree.
Oxtail Stew – A little fatty but like isn't that what we love about oxtail stew? So good.
Mac and Cheese – Oh my god so good. So creamy and rich and not dry at all.
Cabbage – Super delicious, crunchy, acidic and a perfect foil to rich stewed meats.
Doubles – Really tasty. Admittedly, I've never tried a double before and didn't know what to expect, but I could get into it.
Rice and Peas – Rich and dark and delicious. Couldn't stop eating it. Will order every time I eat here.
Red Beans – They were out of lentils tonight and i was sad but then they gave me red beans instead and it was like yaaaaaasssssss. Spicy and savory and delicious.
Plantains – Not usually my favorite but the best I've ever had. I'm a big fan.
Ginger beer- Too sweet for me but SO SPICY and gingery and nice. Great mixed with seltzer…or rum…or gin.
The inside is tiny with limited seating. It seems like their main business is take-out & delivery, although there is usually a decent sized crowd inside. The staff is friendly and helpful. They've made a few mistakes on my take-out orders, but have always corrected it, without issue.
In general, I don't think people come here for the atmosphere…it's for the big platters of delicious food…I know I do.
I order from them at least twice a month, delivery time has been pretty good. Callaloo, beef roti, oxtail & goat dinners and poulhrie are delicious.
Love this place! It's more of a takeout spot with a few seats however eating in is a neighborhood Caribbean experience. An absolute favorite is the oxtails. I had this yesterday. My sides were callaloo and plantains. I liked the callaloo which is creamy.
Good Caribbean food, but I was expecting more given Tony B. had glorified the place with his presence. I wasn't sure what to think when I saw the Special of the day on the wall- Chinese chicken with fried rice. Say what?
The curry chicken roti was HUGE. Very generous with the sauce and meat. Too bad I'm not a fan of white meat. If you feel like an exotic burrito, this has everything you need. Great flavors.
The stewed chicken and oxtails were good, but I do prefer many other Jamaican spots that use more spices. Slightly on the salty side, too.
Stay away from the seats by the kitchen door unless you want to be the human sponge of vented grease that was escaping from the kitchen to the outdoor. I was not ready to do my laundry this early in the week yet…
Let me start off by saying I'm very pleased with my food that I purchased from Gloria's. This place was recommended to me by a fellow Yelper who happens to be my friend, Betula F……..thanks so much for the tip.
The business has open doors so that fresh air fills the space…..refreshing. The decor is simple but nice. What I didn't understand is why was there a lamppost in the middle of the business but hey it may be symbolic.
The counter person who took my order was very nice. The service was pretty quick, I didn't wait no longer than about six minutes for my order to be ready. Upon giving me my order, he told me to enjoy and have a good evening.
I couldn't wait to get home to eat my roti and boy oh boy, it was everything that I had hoped it would be. I'm so glad that I was able to satisfy my craving with some great food from Gloria's. I will definitely be back to try some other items on the menu.
Awesome Caribbean food! I got my beloved roti which they customized for me with tofu and veggies together. And mauby to drink, and coconut lemon pound cake for dessert. The vegetarian and the meat eaters in our group were well satisfied 🙂 The service was friendly too and we truly appreciated the multicultural holiday ornaments… Thanks for the menorah along with the tree, that is a nice touch 🙂 Hope to be back someday.
