Of all the Jamaican places in NYC this ranks as on of the most basic. Like most major restaurant chains, the quality of the wood will likely suffer at the desire to produce it on a mass scale. As a Jamaican I can say that Golden Krust is no different.
They have all the major Jamaican dishes (oxtail, curry chicken, beef patties, etc…) but all of them are missing that personal touch that makes Jamaican food as awesome as it is. I've had the oxtail here as well as the stew chicken and both were very standard and left much to desire.
The restaurant itself is more of a take out place with minimal seating. Service is actually better than most Jamaican places which tend to be painfully slow, but it's still not S efficient as it can be. This would be fine if the food were amazing, but unfortunately it isn't.
This place is cool to come to if you're in the area and maybe want a quick beef patty, but for authentic and delicious Jamaican food you're better off heading up to the Bronx on White Plains Road or Brooklyn.
The best patties. My favorite is the jerk chicken.
They're very reasonably priced. This Golden Krust is bigger and cleaner than some of their other locations.
Good food.
My husband is Jamaican and wanted to have Jamaican food for dinner. We found this restaurant online and decided to try it.
It's very small restaurant, and we almost missed it as the stores in between were closed.
We ordered Jerk chicken, coco bread, and beef patties. They were good. I liked them.
The service wasn't anything exceptional.
I would come back here if I crave Jamaican food in New York.
This place has great and affordable lunch specials. You can get some good west indian food and a good amount. There are also beef patties and Jamaican soda. I find Golden Krust to be a good place to get a very well balanced and tasty meal!
Lunch specials with a meat, rice and beans or veggies and sweet plantains start at pocket friendly price of $5.99. The choices today were stewed chicken and curried chicken. I elected the stewed chicken as those I have tried are of braised goodness. This one was tasty and had lots of skin a plus though a bit oiley in a bland brown sauce. Rice and beans were flavorless and the only savior was the maduros. Rice and beans and maduros(the holy triad) can save anything.
3.5 stars…
Although Golden Krust is the largest Caribbean chain restaurant with well over 100 locations spread across the country (mostly just the east coast) they did start in NYC and it doesn't really feel like a big chain business, although the service is about the same you'd get at McDonalds. I went into it hearing the non-patty food wasn't that great and the service wouldn't be either so I just ordered two patties, a mild beef and a jerk chicken. The traditional Jamaican patty is beef so I expected that to be the better of the two but it wasn't. The yellowish crust wasn't all that delicate or flaky and it was almost as if they forgot to fill it, it had about the same amount of filling as a poptart. The flavor was decent but I wish I hadn't got the mild because there was no spice to it at all. I was surprised how hot the two patties were though, the girl just grabbed them from a glass case where they were just sitting there for who knows how long but they were as hot as if they just came out of the oven. The jerk chicken patty was better but not exactly a home run. The more beige crust had a fresher and more flaky consistency. It also had more filling but not a whole lot. There wasn't anything that resembled chicken in the patty but the spices were great and the value was good. For less than $5 to get two patties is definitely a good deal even if they were a tad disappointing.
My Friend and I were heading to an off Broadway show located only one block away,we were 45 minutes early and decided to grab a quick and cheap bite,we spotted Golden Crust and decided to give it a try.happy we did,we both ordered the stew chicken and were satisfied.the place is small but neat with a few chairs and tables if you decide to stay and eat.Overall it was okay and if i am in the neighborhood i will once again give it a try, this time I will go for the jerk chicken.
Not all Jamaican spots are good. This place sucks. Rubbery rice. Dry stew chicken. Nasty cabbage pea carrot mix. No bueno.
